  1. You "oldies" haven't seen what's really going on here, have you? Here's a tip. "Newbies" is just a code word for the increasing hoard of secret conscripts to the Army of Peng. We are training under cover in Russia, and will soon unleash our superior forces against Berli and Seana-choo-choo and other sleeping giants comfortably resting on their laurels. Yes, we ask stupid and senseless questions to distract and annoy you. Our leader PENG has wisely instructed us to waste your resources and time while simultaneously teaching us the very skills we will need to defeat you. An inspired master plan from Master Peng. Once your vital Oldie juices are diminished (as if they aren't already), the new, improved Giant-Size AoP will strike and smite you into Peng-sized bits. Newbies shall conquer all and inherit the CM universe. WE ARE LED BY PENG! (Unfortunately, Chiang Kai Shek and Franco are heartbeat-challenged, but PENG brings us as much excitement and leadship as these Pseudo-General Mummies could ever do.) Beware of Newbies in Peng clothing. He has issued us extra underclothes, so we are soil-proof. HeHeHe HoHoHo HaHaHa...... ------------------ I fought the Law and the Law won.
  2. The Fire and Maneuver scenario gives me two 81MM German mortars with spotters riding in a halftrack. Do these mortars need to be removed and set up on the ground, or can I fire them from the halftrack? Any tips on accuracy? Thanks ------------------ I fought the Law and the Law won.
  3. Can we get grids or color code terrain that turn on and off, so we aren't stuck with the grid all the time? I don't have the talent for such daring. ------------------ I fought the Law and the Law won.
  4. I agree with Jardis re Voodoo 5 meeting my needs for picture quality and FSAA at good frame rates for sims. I got a V5 last week for CM. It looks great running at 1024 x 768 on a 19" monitor with 4X FSAA. I have PIII 600 with 128RAM. I researched the GF2 cards, but game compatibility and driver problems, plus the super-resolution (with insufficient memory bandwidth) method of FSAA put me off. Get the V5 and you'll be happy. ------------------ I fought the Law and the Law won.
  5. Great posts from Peng, Seanachai, MarkIV, and Germanboy! LOL! Okay, I get the point and surrender. (You guys don't shoot prisoners, do you?) From now on, as Peng might recommend, I will simply shoot a guy first. If he doesn't respond, I'll know he's dead. Kind of like dunking people to see if they are witches. It works everytime. Foolproof! Because your posts caused me to laugh so much, I have decided not to sue you afterall. Who says there isn't a God? Thanks for the good tip about zooming in. I do it some now, but to save time and get the overall feel, I have been playing with the 3 and 4 views mostly. I'll need to adjust my style to 1 and 2 before playing online. I don't what it is, but too many people take a perverse pleasure in shooting at lawyers. BTW, Peng, I think you are on to something with that non-violent war game idea. I think Hasbro will snap it up to sell at Wal-Mart wit a "G" label. But Microsoft may beat us to it. I read that CFS II will avoid the bombing of Japan and kamakazes because people today may find it upsetting. Cheers ------------------ Res ipsa loquitur [This message has been edited by Lawyer (edited 07-22-2000).]
  6. As someone new to CM who is dedicated to learning the game and enjoying it, I thought the original question was a good one. Identifying dead squads among the living is a constant detail monitoring issue that could use some improvement. The suggested fixes to the original question do not directly deal with the issue of dead soldiers being clearly marked. For example, I don't like to use the color bases because it ruins the feel of the battle scene. I've spent a long time on the EAW forum at Combat.sim. There is generally an enthusiastic rush of help for newbies on any EAW subject, even though many forum members have been playing EAW for 2 years or more and have been through it before. This welcoming attitude works and keeps bringing new players into the community. I like the helpful tone of the CM forum overall, but not this thread. I hope people who followed development of CM would welcome newbies who will make the larger market that expands CM in popularity. If you want new people to get into and support CM, it's not real helpful to admonish them to search the thousands of entries on the forum for an answer. If you don't want to help, leave it for someone who will. I have been pleased to receive fast and helpful responses to my questions. I hope it stays that way for other new players who want to contribute. A little red to mark dead squads seems like a useful game suggestion. I hope BTS considers it for the next patch. ------------------ Res ipsa loquitur
  7. Many thanks, Chrisl! ------------------ Res ipsa loquitur
  8. I'm a dumb lawyer who cannot figure out how to string different commands together as mentioned in the CM manual. Somebody please tell me precisely what to do after selecting a squad to make it (1) run to a waypoint, then (2) sneak to another waypoint, then (3) hide when they arrive, and finally (4) target a specific vehicle or squad. The interaction between moving commands and firing commands when mixed together is confusing to me. Thanks for any help. ------------------ Res ipsa loquitur
  9. If it's not too late, let me recommend "Orbvs Terrarvm" by Orb for music to play by. This CD, a few years old, is music/sound effects like Pink Floyd without the songs and words. Very good for keeping your pulse and mood of apprehension while you plot moves, without being too distracting. I especially love the occasional readings about slugs, baby slugs, grandmother slugs, and Tim. I'm listening to it now, In fact, I think I ought to get another Orb CD to celebrate CM. ------------------ Res ipsa loquitur [This message has been edited by Lawyer (edited 07-10-2000).]
  10. 1280 x 960 on a PIII 600 with Matrox G400 and a 19" monitor . Runs smoothly and looks great so far. Haven't encountered fog yet. It ran well at 1280 x 1024, but I wanted the better proportions. ------------------ Res ipsa loquitur
  11. Yeah, I have the same problem. Does somebody have a good way to get LOS without over-exposing yourself? ------------------ Res ipsa loquitur
  12. Melloj, I have the same problem running full CM on PIII 600 with 128RAM and Matrox G400 Max. So I avoid the keys and use the mouse, which is smooth though a little twitchy. ------------------ Res ipsa loquitur
  13. I very much like the focused content and expert knowledge on this forum regarding CM and the military topics affecting the game. As a veteran of the EAW forum on Combatsim, I got tired of the excessive posturing, babe pictures, politics, personal agendas, and general off-topic discussions that made it hard to keep up with actual information related to the real topic of that forum, which is supposed to be EAW. The large number of posts on this forum is terrific, but also a real challenge to keep up with after work and still have time to play CM. Plus I like the active participation of BTS, Fionn, and the guys who helped develop this game. Great interaction! I like this forum a lot so far. ------------------ Res ipsa loquitur
  14. Uh oh, Ghost, what is the transparency problem with the G400? I haven't had time to find it yet. I'm thinking about getting a GE Force or V5 550. My only concern is picture quality with EAW and Jane's WW2F. ------------------ Res ipsa loquitur
  15. Yeah, I am backed up on books bought to read on WW2 air war and pilots, but I dropped another $30 Monday to get "View from the Turret" and "Panzerjager" by Folkestad to get me into the CM feeling. Buying is the easy part. Finding time to read them is the hard part. Finding time to play the game is the hardest part. ------------------ Res ipsa loquitur
  16. Steven Ambrose describes the Germans as basically hiding behind the hedgerows, not dug into them, in "Citizen Soldiers". ------------------ Res ipsa loquitur
  17. I would like a recommended list centered on the Battlefront site since we all come here. I don't mind downloading them elsewhere, but I don't have the time to check them all out. From other sims, I have noticed that general sponsors of a sim don't like to criticize any missions because they appreciate the effort made by the mission developer. We need someplace that groups them by topic at least, and hopefully recommends the best. ------------------ Res ipsa loquitur
  18. Well, I think I fixed the mouse too with new drivers. ------------------ Res ipsa loquitur
  19. Thanks for your help, guys. The problem seems solved with the full version of CM. I backed off the overclocking to 611mhz and it runs fine with the latest Matrox drivers. Now if I can just stop the mouse pointer on my Kensington Expert mouse from flickering.... ------------------ Res ipsa loquitur
  20. Tres Monts golden ale from Flanders, France. Better than the big name Belgian beers and cheaper too. Reminds me of sipping brews on the Gran Place. Molson Golden and Ice otherwise. As to drinking alone, the company is always agreeable and you always win the arguments. Why do people who don't like beer post on the "Beer" thread anyway? Perhaps they are the ones with no other life. ------------------ Res ipsa loquitur
  21. I have a G400 Max video card and Monster Sound MX300 soundcard. I am having lockups with the Gold demo. It starts fine, but after 10 seconds or so of scrolling around the 3-D battlefield, my system locks. Running CM on a PIII 600 at 672mz with 128RAM. Thanks for any help. ------------------ Res ipsa loquitur
