  1. I have read the numerous threads on terrain and elevation, but have one more question: How representative of the elevation system are the three demo scenarios? For my first scenario I am going to design I want to build a river running through a gorge with mountains on both sides. How tall will I be able to make the mountain and how deep the gorge (with reference to the hills in Last Defence and Riesberg and CE)? - Bill
  2. To go with the "seat of the pants" mentality rather than the mathematical precise command style, I would like to see unit descriptions written as grunts opinions. Something like (for the StuG) "Well, they ain't much out in the open, and you can flank the hell out of them, but if a StuG is waiting for you - watch out. Its gun can hammer a sherman from pretty good distance, and the things are tough to spot when they have some cover to work with." If people want the specific info on each unit they can hit enter in the game and see it. I'd just like a quick this unit does this and is good at that and has this really bad design flaw (i.e. no armor and open topped) - Bill
  3. I am curious as to how CM models foxholes. Specifically, I am wondering if eaach squad digs into *one* foxhole or into 2,4,6,8,10,or 12 foxholes. The reason I ask is that I would think twelve guys in one hole would be extra susceptible to mortars and artillery (one hit and boom). Anyone have the info on this or what WWII SOP was? - Bill
  4. Sarge, While you are in a game, push shift-d (I think) Anyway, if you click on the hotkeys thing down in the status area it will show you all the hotkeys. Turn detailed armor hit text off is one of them. - Bill
  5. I called Feb. 1 for the CD. You got my demo date. Cool idea - Bill
  6. I think the biggest thing the Germans have in CE is a 81mm FO, so it was probably that. Talk about bad luck! - Bill
  7. Acutally, I could play one more right now. Anyone up for Riesberg (either side)?
  8. *slaps two quarters down on the table* My bet is for February the First (Full Game) and January the 23 for the Gold Demo. This is based on neither fact or reason, they just sound like good dates. How will I get my money? Cash is preferable, but I also accept checks and major credit cards - Bill
  9. kevi, I've noticed that squads that are being fired on from multible directions (60° arc or more) tend to panic much more often. Also, shermans will panic infantry in a matter of seconds. The HE is deadly. Conscripts and Green troops also panic at the drop of a hat, so keep them out of the thick of it. Basically, just common sense. - Bill
  10. Steve, Did you get your G4 before or after the weirdness when Apple increased prices, cut speed, undid it all and redid it all in a period of 24 hours? - Bill [This message has been edited by billcarey (edited 12-29-99).]
  11. Now I am playing 4 games. This is about all my pea brain can handle at a time. If it gets much worsse I'll be ordering the allies to defend reisberg against 2 stugs and a tiger! Thanks for responding everyone. - Bill (swamped in PBEM files)
  12. I think that you can help yourself out a little by turning "detailed armor hit text" off. This will remove the messages saying, "Front Upper Hull Penetration: Gun Damage" and the like. Won't help with knowing if vehicles are abandoned or not... I would like to see this be a for of war issue. If you have full identification of the vehicle then you should get an abandoned/KOed message for it sometimes, if you have partial identification, then maybe an intermediate status like "just sitting there" could be displayed. This could mean KOed or it could mean the opponnent is ordering it to hold tight and wait for you to go away. Add just a little confusion... - Bill
  13. I'll play any side and scenario... Can respond 7+ times per daay (I love christmas break ) - Bill billcarey@virginia.edu
  14. I did a search for this and couldn't find it. Whenever I press the escape key to hide combat mission and run a program that changes the color depth of the monitor and then return to combat mission enormously bad thing happen: The graphics look like a LSD induced confetti party and the game freezes, making me force quit. My graphics card is an AGP Rage 128 with 16mb ram and I am running the latest Open GL from apple. Don't know if the color thing is a driver thing or a CM thing... - Bill
  15. kevi, The sequal to Combat Mission, Combat Mission 2 will be the Eastern front and only the eastern front. It will also include some engine improvements and the like (i think) so it will be a new game, not just an expansion pack. Can't wait! (for either) - Bill
  16. Who in an allied rifle squad carried the Thomson SMG? I always thought it was the Seargant. I only ask this because I split a squad and the Corporal's squad ended up with the SMG. Not that it matters... - Bill
  17. Moon, I don't mean walking backwards and shooting per se - rather, the BAR lays down some fire while three guys run back 20 feet. They turn around and shoot while the BAR runs back and so on and so forth. Probably at 1/3 or 1/4 firepower and a little slower than move, but still something. I do use the other squads as support fire, but sometimes this is not an option (the other 2 squads arent there ) - Bill [This message has been edited by billcarey (edited 12-27-99).]
  18. It would seem to me that in controlled withdrawl situations (Sarge says, "fall back to that wall and dig in there" not the "Run in circles, scream and shout!") troops would be more likely to withdraw while still firing (especially LMGs or BARs) to cover their butts. Not at full firepower, but still shooting. I would like to see another move (definitely a CM2 or 3 feature...) to withdraw while still facing towards the enemy and laying down fire. This would really help overextended squads live longer... I have no idea whether a firing withdrawl is standard practice... anyone in the know on this? - Bill
  19. If you run two groups of soldires *very* close to each other you can sometimes hear a whap whap of them beating on each other. This usually happens when squads are low on ammo... You don't see anything, but hand to hand is in there. If you need something to do I'll let you whoop up on me PBEM style. Just pick an army and a place and prepare to die. billcarey@virginia.edu - Bill [This message has been edited by billcarey (edited 12-27-99).]
  20. Lindan, I got the same message. Are you surfing on a Mac by any chance? It may be that the Evil Empire has done something to smite the Macintosh on this particular web program - Bill
  21. Yeah - I guess it would be too easy to bootleg. I just want Steve and Charles to get their money (and me my game) as quickly as is humanly possible. - Bill
  22. Would it be possible for the people who have preordered (and have either a lot of time or a fast connection) to be able to download the full game from a secure website instead of waiting for it to be duplicated and shipped? I suppose this depends on how big the final game is...
  23. That was all I could do with a German Dictionary and a semester of German 4 years ago . If you really know how to say Live Girls in German, I will change the texture to reflect the correct way of saying it. The wonders of Photoshop. - Bill Carey [This message has been edited by billcarey (edited 12-21-99).]
  24. Speaks for itself: For Mature Audiences Only Responsibility for this belongs jointly to Eridani and billcarey.
  25. Thanks Fionn, It had me worried until I figured out what it was! Then it wasn't so much of a problem. PBEM Games can go very slow... - Bill
