1. based on my experience, CM projectile modeling, at least from on board mortars, IS abstracted. I have yet to hit the side of a building when either firing too close to one or targeting a unit hugging a building. Mathematically speaking, one of the two would have had to happen in my experiences. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
2. not familiar with ytttt, but bttt=back to the top. as I'm doing here again
3.
quote:
Originally posted by Joe Shaw: {sigh} I don't want to get into all this again except to say ... Prove it. Joe

Joe, if I could prove, don't you think others could have as well? Others much smarter than me? I cannot prove it and you know it. But I feel better thinking it was a conspiracy than chalking it up to just plain incompetence. All the evidence I've seen to date points to the fact that we knew (and the Brits as well) that Pearl Harbor was going to be attacked. I cannot prove we intentionally ignored that evidence nor can you prove that we were that incompetent. So I guess we agree to disagree and I'll drop it. Later p.s., I'm more interested in the Lord of the Rings movie as well
4. good question Kverdon. Beta testers? ------------------ Jeff Abbott
5. of the ones I've played (Wiltz, Bruyeres, St. Annes Chapelle, Grosshau Ridge, Aachen, Sherbrooke Fusiliers, Elsdorf) I'd have to say: Sherbrooke Fusiliers as the Canadiens Wiltz as the Germans followed closely by St. Annes Chapelle (as the Germans) and Aachen (as the US) ------------------ Jeff Abbott
6.
quote:
Originally posted by herbjorn: Is it true that the Japanese declearation of war was handed over 1h before the attack on Pearl Harbor, but because of translation problems, it could not be read in time to act?

I believe it was the other way around. 1hour AFTER the attack. No matter, Roosevelt knew about it all the time, he just chose to ignore it so he had an ironclad excuse to enter the war. My empathy goes out the the Admiral who had to take the fall for Roosevelts plan. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
7. Capitalistic Dog Dude - I thought of that a couple nights ago myself, but forgot about it until you just mentioned it. Needless to say, I love that idea ------------------ Jeff Abbott
8. I played St. Annes Chapelle as the Germans and got my butt whipped. It was my 2nd scenario played. Definitely will play again. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
9. I haven't played an operation yet, so this may or may not be simulated, but here goes... I was toying with the idea of creating an op where the Germans are nearly surrounded and have to keep an escape avenue open while at the same time pull off a fighting retreat. the objective would be to retreat with 75% of its forces still in fighting condition. The allies of course would attempt to close the circle then defeat as much as the German army as they could after it was closed. Failing that, attempt to kill off more than 50% of the German army while it's retreating. Various scenarios within the overall larger battle could simulate a fighting retreat, a hold terrain at all costs (i.e., keep the noose from closing), reinforcements attempt to punch through to make another escape avenue. That sort of thing. Another idea would be for the Germans to be completely encircled and allow them to choose 1 of 4 flags to capture (I read in the manual where this was possible). The Allies would have no idea which flag is the victory flag and would thus have to be prepared on all fronts. The Germans of course could fake an attack one way whilst concentrating their main attack the other way. The last scenario within that battle would be the allies in a line across the middle of the map with the axis on either side. The axis trying to open the escape route while the allies try to stop it. The allies then would be reinforced from the sides bringing all forces together at the middle of the map where the final victory flag is. Something along those lines. Like I said, such an operation may already be present on the CD. I don't know, haven't played any of them yet. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
10. Tuettonic, I'm willing to accept that answer (or any answer for that matter). I was just curious if the actually flight of a mortar or arty shell was tracked from barrel to ground, or if it was just a random hit in a given area. Because if the trajectories are computed, then I'm more likely to hide behind a building knowing that I couldn't sustain a direct hit (shrapnel and concussion waves are another story, but not a direct hit). But if they just "show up", then it would be better to be in the building. Also, do I have to worry about that building in front of me as I'm firing my 60 mm or 81 mm mortar. I guess I could try that myself to find out, eh? ------------------ Jeff Abbott

13. Generally, the AI is more adept when on defense. So, to make it more challenging the first time I play a scenario I usually take the attacker. My suggestions then are for the virgin game. Usually it's easier to attack once you've defended. Wiltz - Germans (though I think Americans might have it harder) St. Anne's Chappelle - Germans (got my butt whipped in that one - highly recommend it). Elsdorf - Americans, definitely Sherbrooke Fusiliers - Definitely play the canadians Aachen - I played the Germans my first time, but would recommend the Americans as a first go at it Grosshau Ridge - Americans Midnight Madness (a WBW special) - Just started, but I'm playing the Germans and have already been surprised. I'd recommend them but Wild Bill may have a different opinion. That's it for now. oops, forgot Bruyeres - I played the Germans but completely missed a whole group of my guys in the black setup zone given that it was a night scenario. So that made it very difficult. I wound up with a draw. Try that for a challenge ------------------ Jeff Abbott [This message has been edited by Juardis (edited 07-19-2000).]
14. Why on earth would you listen to music?!?! This is a battlefield dammit, not a concert hall. American Robins are chirping, arty is dropping in the distance, motors are idling. THAT's the music! And that doesn't even account for the 60 sec of mayhem each turn. BTS, I suggest you make identifying sound contacts harder for those people who listen to music while playing. Very unprofessional! ------------------ Jeff Abbott
15. I had a halftrack parked at the corner of a 2 story building. Havermeyer had a 60 mm mortar team right behind another 2 story building (he estimates 5m or so). He was about 120 m from me as the crow flies (that being an American crow ). He had a HQ unit in c&c with his mortar team and in LOS of my track. So he targeted my track and destroyed it with the mortar. Which I guess confused me a little since his mortar shell had to have gone thousands of feet into the air to clear the building he was behind and the building I was behind yet still travel 120 m or so horizontally. Not one shell hit the top or side of the building I was hiding behind. So my question is simple. Does the math compute trajectory angles for mortar and/or arty fire? For example, the range of a 60 mm mortar is 400 m. Which means it has to fire at a 45 degree angle to achieve that range. I would hope that a unit hidden directly behind a 2 story building 400 m away from said mortar crew could not be hit by that crew. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
16. I like it. Finish it and let us know when it's done. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
17. Ahhh, you're playing a human? That would explain it. The AI is rather awkward on the attack with that many units to command. But even at that, the shear number of troops coming at me is overwhelming. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
18. Possible spoilers below, this directed at Kingfish so he can read with the spoilage effect. x x x x x x x x Kingfish, if I may be so bold. You didn't hide your troops in round one or the setup phase did you? And they opened up too soon didn't they? And the German armor/arty picked them off didn't they? Yep, I'd estimate around turn 6 . But if I'm wrong, then how the heck did things go so bad so quick? Yep, I agree, you just gotta love this game . It'll humble you in a hurry. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
19. I'm on turn 14 of this beast, playing the Canucks, and getting the piss beat out of me. All my AT guns are gone. My piats are starting to panic or run out of ammo or aren't close enough to the action yet. My 4.5 inch FO is down to his last ammo point. My other 3 25 pdr FOs are approaching 5 ammo points left with plenty of troops well past the TRP on the right side of the map near the village. I still have a goodly number troops hidden and waiting for the right moment, mostly in the middle of the map where there hasn't been any action yet, but the Germans have 3 or 4 PZ IVs providing overwatch so when I do spring my trap they won't last long. In short, I'm hoping and praying for those damned reinforcements because if they don't show up soon, I'm toast and the invasion could be pushed back into the sea. But man, what a battle. It seems the German armor is endless. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
20. Well, I've seen advice for both setting the marker before where you want it and after where you want it, depending on troop quality (more crack it is, the closer you place the marker to where you really want it). Some have supposed that green troops will fire before the ambush marker is reached, so place the marker 20 m further on than where you want it. You suggest putting the marker 20 m in front of where you want it. Guess only experience will tell. Regards ------------------ Jeff Abbott
21. Spoons! Glad to see you dude. I found out about CM in the Combatsim armor forum. I was perusing the M1TP3 death threads (good writeup you had on Sim HQ btw) and Steal Beasts threads when someone posted something about CM. Well, one thing led to another and now I don't care about M1TP3 not coming out anymore. Glad to see you're interested in CM. Great WW2 game. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
22. Not really Kiwi. This simulates the fact that a commander would have the chance to scout out the terrain prior to a battle. I mean, one has to have a good idea as to where to attack or where an attack will come from prior to it happening. So it only makes sense to plot up some mortar fire on those positions...just in case. I would if I were the commander. ------------------ Jeff Abbott [This message has been edited by Juardis (edited 07-17-2000).]
23. Well, what's the penetration depth of a 14 inch shell? I watched a documentary on the Discovery channel about Battleships. It said that a 16 inch shell fired from the USS NC could penetrate 26 inches of reinforced concrete. So it seems a 14 inch shell should have no problem with a 15 inch concrete roof. But only with a direct hit. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
24. Well, I feel somewhat better now that I know it's happened to other people as well. But even so, it's frustrating to setup a well laid ambush and not have it go off. If this is supposed to happen to model miscommunication, fine, I can live with that so long as it works more than it fails. And yes, I did have a clear LOS from the ambush marker and all along the path the armor took. I was next to a road and the armor was on the road, coming at me, then past me, no more than 10 m from where I was. BTW, one interesting tidbit I learned during my search. During the setup phase, move your HQ units to different positions and setup ambush markers all around the map at opportune locations, then place your HQ where you normally would. When the turns start, you'll have ambush markers to focus fire on much more rapidly (and efficiently in the case of mortars) than you would have otherwise. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
