1.
quote:
Originally posted by Captitalistdoginchina: Soooooo, Juardis, Tell us what happened? Did your M10 live or die ?? CDIC

My opponent had the M10. My closest Stug III was 10m on his flanks. One shot, one kill. Fortunately, it was not a catasrophic kill because there could have been a lot of collateral damage (I had a pz grenadier within 2-3m on the other side of a wooden wall). That was my main concern, that my Stug would kill himself in the process. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
 2. I have 2 PBEM games and one canned scenario (Sherbrooke Fusiliers) going on right now. It's damned tough for me to keep up with what I want my next move to be. I'll watch the movie and make mental notes, like set area fire here, or crawl to there, or rush this building there. But then when I get the turn back, it's hard to recollect whether my mental notes applied to this game or the other games I have going. So, just out of curiousity, how many PBEM games you guys got going at the same time? I think I saw someone had 20 going at the same time. Ouch, don't know how you do it. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
 3.
quote:
Originally posted by WildBill: Did you get Relieving the Rangers yet? Any thoughts? That one should be a good PBEM battle too.

That scenario briefing sounds sweet. Can't wait to download it. With regards to the above quote, the answer is no. Thanks for the tip though. Havermeyer and I are playing a QB and are also on turn 8 of Midnight Madness at Prum - will rate that one on the CMHQ Scenario Depot when I finish. So far it gets 5 stars from me. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
 4.
quote:
Originally posted by Peterk: In fact this one is near-perfection for a quick e-mail game if someone's looking for something good to play. p.

Ahhhh, that is why I've been looking forward to WBW "The Second Job". City fighting - by it's nature very tense. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
 5. It started with me, downloading the gold demo. I got hooked. I told havermeyer. He downloaded and got hooked. We both preorder. Now we talk constantly at work about our PBEM battles. Gave the gold demo to 2 more coworkers so they can decide if they want it. Two others are interested, mainly because of our AARs. They want to burn a copy. Being as loyal to BTS as they have been to us, we hold the line. If they want it, they'll have to buy it. And that's exactly what one of them will do. I mean we want CM2, and 3, and 4, and ... afterall. From 1 to 2 to 3 to possibly 5. Our coffee kletch is growing. Anyway, word of mouth is a powerful ally. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
 6. I remember you posting about it at the beginning of the week and it sounded very intriguing and perfect for a double blind PBEM game. Are you still testing it or did you drop it? Keep up the great work. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
 7.
quote:
Originally posted by Fionn: Joe, I hear you regarding Andreas. He seems to be carving a path through a lot of opponents .

Is Andreas Germanboy? Is he that good? I'm 0-1 in PBEM, so I'm just curious.
 8. Sorry Rommel, we seem to have blown you off. September issue, the one with Bond, James Bond on the cover ------------------ Jeff Abbott
 9. cward, my bad. PC Games was the magazine that called SPWAW the best wargame of the year, not PC Gamer. Anyway, I'm not dissing SPWAW, I'm sure it's a fine game. But having played SP1, 2, and 3, I'm struggling to envision SPWAW being better than CM. Besides, you cannot call something the best of the year when the year is only half over. Especially when CM was coming/is here. That was my point in my email to the author. SPWAW *IS* free, but it's also a 300 MB download. Not even gonna go there on my 56k modem. Take too much time away from playing CM . Regards
 10. The only real niggle I have with Trotter's review is that, in the box listed for multi-player, it says NONE. Excuse me?!?! I guess hot-seat and PBEM aren't multi-player?! Anyway, it was good to see an honest to goodness review of the game as opposed to being the focus of his feature. Good score. And EDITORS CHOICE to boot. Oh, btw, earlier on a seperate thread I said I emailed PC Gamer urging them to review the game. I was wrong. It was PC Games. So I fully expect to see a review in PC Games soon (yeah right). ------------------ Jeff Abbott
 11. As his esteemed opponent, I concur with Havermeyer. SPOILERS x x x x x x x x x x I'm playing the germans attacking his american troops. My recon briefing said that his defensive perimeter was ill prepared for an attack. By Havermeyer moving his troops out of dug in positions to ambush me, he left himself wide open to annihilation. To say that he was ill prepared is an understatement . This scenario is awesome though. It's night AND snowing. You don't know the enemy is there half the time until your dead. WBW, great job. I just love your scenarios and am looking forward to "The Second Job". ------------------ Jeff Abbott
 12. you're seeing correct. Snowing but no snow on ground.
 13. Upgrading your vid card won't speed up your game play too much, but it will allow you more eye candy. I cannot see anything in CM that would benefit from a Ge Force or Geforce 2 (i.e., hardware T&L). If you were to get a V5 5500, you could turn on 4X FSAA and enjoy awesome flicker free, jaggy free graphics. But that's me, both cards are plenty fast enough but it's your cpu holding back frames per second. So, given the option of TNT2 or V3, I'd get the V3 as it's a better card. Here's how I'd rank the 2 companies products. 1a. V5 5500 1b. Geforce 2 2. Geforce (DDR - double data rate) 3. V3 4. Geforce (SDR - single data rate) 5. TNT2 Ultra ------------------ Jeff Abbott
 14. There is a fine line between blitzkrieg tactics and cautious tactics. Too fast and you could fall into a trap with too few assets to cover your ass. Too slow and your enemy could use that time to solidify his position and fields of fire. Generally, I err on the blitzkrieg style but definitely need to move more towards the cautious style (eww, I'm sounding like Gen. Montgomery here ). However, like I said, it's a fine line. So yes, he who dares may not win, but he who hesitates mya also lose. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
 15. Thanks Desertfox, I'm reading this at work (shhhh, don't tell anybody). The list is most impressive. I can't wait to get home tonight... ------------------ Jeff Abbott
 16. I just downloaded 1.03, but I don't have time to execute the patch before I go to work. Besides, I need to convert my PBEMs first. Can someone be so kind as to list what has been fixed (if indeed that info exists)? 'preciate it. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
 17. So Havermeyer decides to rush his M10 into a position against a building in a vain attempt to hold off my advancing hordes. Unfortunately for him I reach that same position before he does (it's midnight and snowing and visibility is really low - in short, it's Midnight Madness ). Anyway, one of my tanks (don't want to get specific) is like 3m from his M10, staring it in the flank. Can either one of us get off a shot that close? And if so, is there that possibility that we'll both get knocked out by the same shell? I need to know before I get the email back. In short, should I stay or should I go? This indecision's bugging me... My other 2 tanks have a bead on him as well, so backing the closest one out shouldn't matter (assuming of course that I do *kill* the arrogant M10). ------------------ Jeff Abbott
 18. I'm having one squad lay down suppressing fire into a house which I'm not sure is occupied or not (it's midnight and snowing), while I have another squad run into that house. The field manual has this to say about area fire "Area fire usually lasts until the order is cancelled by the player. However, area fire will be automatically stopped if a friendly unit enters the target zone ...." Fine, that's why I did what I did. Problem is, the squad laying down the suppression kept firing into the house even when my other squad was the only unit in there. Result? One dead soldier. Now I have to write his parents and tell how brave he was in his last minutes when it was his own comrade that killed him . Bug or Fog of war? The squad laying down the suppression had a LOS into the house, but like I said, visibility was like 60m or so, so is it possible he lost track of his own squadmates when they went into the house? ------------------ Jeff Abbott
 19. yes. get them. and the winter camo textures, and the sound patches as well. Adds a lot, especially the new sounds (more like the first 30 minutes of Saving Pvt Ryan). oops, just noticed you have version 1.2, which means you might have the demo, which means the mad dog mod patches won't work. So if you do have the demo, don't bother. If you have the latest cut CDs that already have the 1.2 patch, then by all means, get the MDMPs. ------------------ Jeff Abbott [This message has been edited by Juardis (edited 07-26-2000).]
 20. Well, as good as CM is, I will probably buy Harpoon 4 when it comes out. I've been looking forward to that game for a good long while now, so CM or no CM, I will buy H4. How long I stay away from CM though is another matter ------------------ Jeff Abbott
 21. Panzer Leader and SL. Last summer I bought PL again in hopes that I could interest my then 9 year old in the game. Alas, it was too frustrating for him so I've had to put it aside. But I also bought Victory. Great game to introduce the young'uns to. However, youth today want more instant gratification, so I have to kick him off of CM so I can play it . I am playing hot-seat against him though. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
 22. Well, I'm not sure the solution. I'm in the midst of a QB with Havermeyer and his 60mm mortar took out 2 of my SPW 251/1. My tracks never moved. But if they did, I'm not sure I'd want them too (as Stonewall Jackson said - you might move into the next bullet). The kicker though was when my buttoned up Stug III got brewed up by an 81 mm and did nothing but take it. Again, should they have moved? I don't know. Is it realistic? I don't know. But I do know it's frustrating as hell! Havermeyer will feel my wrath tonight ------------------ Jeff Abbott
 23.
quote:
Originally posted by Monkeybutt: Sounds like he is talking about William Trotter. -Monkeybutt

No, it wasn't Trotter. I don't recall his name right now. I had never seen it before.
 24.
quote:
Originally posted by gaffertape: Thanks for the tip! Their wargaming guy seems to have a lot on the ball - I've been waiting for him to notice Combat Mission. I guess he finally did. GAFF

It helps if you email him and let him know that SPWAW is NOT the best wargame of the year but CM is! (like I did and apparently Brethon did as well judging from his original post above) (background, in the last issue of PC Gamer the wargaming guy called SPWAW the best wargame of the year and I took offense to that statement and sent him an email respectfully disagreeing with him). ------------------ Jeff Abbott
 25. I agree, this is a real slugfest and one of my favorites to date. I'm still battling, but I just got my reinforcements a couple of turns ago. One thing I noticed was that my overall morale increased just by the mere presence of reinforcements. It's now back to near 50% whereas it was near 30% prior to reinforcements. If my battle is in any way close to the real battle, I have all the respect in the world for the Canadian fighting men. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
