  1. Any of you guys try Aachen yet? Small town fighting at it's finest. I've just setup my forces in it, but it looks VERY intense. Won't know for sure until I play it, but...small town fighting is by it's nature intense. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
  2. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Germanboy: How exactly does killing a lot of enemies affect the experience/combat rating of a unit? That is a bit of jump to me. And as MT said, it is not just cool, but it is a valuable learning tool for you as the player, about effective positioning and use of various unit types. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Well, a conscript or green unit would be expected to panic easily. If they happen to be well positioned and happen to rack up the kills, presumably they would be more confident in the next battle and hence, less likely to panic. String together 3 or so of these types of battles and maybe green units aren't green anymore. Just a thought. With regards to kill info I see too many variables affecting that number. Now, if it was a green unit that racked up 20 kills, then you could probably attribute that to good positioning. But if it was a veteran unit, was it good positioning, good combat readiness, luck, or a combination thereof? But I appreciate y'alls thoughts on it. I see better the value in the kill number. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
  3. Jeff H: where do you live? I think I have a P2-333 lying around at home (from when I upgraded to a celeron 500). I won't be needing it. If you want, I'll look for it and send it to you (free) if I still have it. It's not much, and it may require you to flash your motherboard bios (I had to when I went from my 233 to the 333), but if you're interested email me. jlabbott@duke-energy.com ------------------ Jeff Abbott
  4. I mean, the manual states that a unit's experience will not change during a scenario (cool, it shouldn't during a 90 minute battle) nor during an operation (which could last days). My question with that is, if a green unit experiences one or two battles, doesn't he become un-green? If not, and I start with a green unit and will finish with a green unit in an operation, what good is the Kill info. Knowing my green unit killed 20 units is irrelevant isn't it if it doesn't affect his combat rating? Maybe it's just cool knowing how many units such and such killed? ------------------ Jeff Abbott
  5. Finally got my 'puter put back together at 1:30 this a.m. I put my brand new V5 5500 in, installed Win98, installed my Xitel Storm Platinum sound card (A3D Vortex 2 chipset), and installed CM and the patch. Put the screen at 1024x768, 4x FSAA. Played the tutorial right quick (it was 2:00 a.m.). WOW!!! Infreakingcredible how good it looks. But wait, there's more. Forcefeedback headphones come with the Xitel sound card. Plop those babies on, turn on the forcefeedback, and now feel the power as well as see the power. The headphones vibrate with the bass. Louder the bass, better the effects. So now when a shell lands to my left, I hear it to my left, my screen starts shaking, and my head starts rattling. No jaggies, no shimmers. Truly truly AWESOME! Tonight I install Game Commander to voice activate the hot keys. I'm downloading the Madd Dog patches and hope to install them tonight as well. Does it get any better than this? . What a game! Thank you thank you thank you BTS. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
  6. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by KingOPork: Woot i got my CM today =P And i had a terrible first mission. (no spoilers) Lets just say i went up against a panther tank, it rico'd 10(!!!) shots from my tanks. I mean it took out 5 of my tanks, while they just rico'd off of it's upper hull. So then at 10 shots, i take out it's tracks...yeah! Then 3 more roco's and i finally take it out. No offense, but that's kinda messed up. It was a normal crew and wiped out my elites like nothing. and i don't think it's supposed to ricochet from 5 different angles. oh well, my battles after that ruled. Regardless, that panther tank ruined my day. -KOP<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> LOL, the troubleshooting section in the back of the manual addresses this situation perfectly. And I quote: Problem: "The armor slope of that Panther is off by 0.5 degrees! My life is ruined." Fix: "If you spot any inaccuracies, problems, bugs or simply any weird stuff in the game, please feel free to post it on the CM message board..." Seems you handled your problem in the correct way ------------------ Jeff Abbott
  7. OK Steve, you asked for it I pre-ordered two weeks ago, June 7. My credit card was billed June 16. My very own copy, personalized by BTS themselves (not really, but it sounded good ) arrived via USPS in Charlotte NC on Monday, June 19. And you know what the bit*h of it is? Last night, the day Christmas came early, I had to reformat and reinstall Winblows due to a corrupted registry unrelated to CM. Damn! Well, I've taken this opportunity to add a V5 5500 card so my pain is assuaged greatly . Now, before anyone gets ticked, mail usually gets to my house in 2 days from the time it was sent. Shipped Friday, in transit Saturday, arrived Monday. My mother lives in Davenport IA. Takes 5 days to get to her. No lie. So where you live is just as important as when you ordered. 8. Capt, perhaps you should pee a few times before getting behind a wheel As in, don't drink and drive... Jeff
  9. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Kevin Peltz: Also, (and I am only noting this- I am not biased about this behaviour one way or the other) I notice that people tend to form cliques on forums, where they basically will only respond to each other in their particular group, and responses from "outsiders" are often ignored. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> True, true. It may not be true with this forum (I've only been around a few weeks), but it is definitely true with other forums. In my case, I'm beginning to think it's my nick (Juardis). Pronounced who-ar-dus. Not cool, I know, but it's easily identified and has a story behind it. Like you, I don't sweat it much, but it can get annoying to post valid posts and get ignored. As for PBEM, I'll definitely be looking for some human action. I'm new to the human element of wargames (except I play hot seat with my 10 yr old). I'm just waiting til the vacation breaks clear off the calendar. I'm more inclined to get in 2 or 3 turns a night since I'm extremely busy, so any time I get to play comes in chunks (like a night here or there). But if I start, I should finish. Drudgery is something to guard against though. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
  10. The main point is combat mission with FSAA looks great. I posted a similar observation a couple of weeks ago. No, I don't have my 5500 yet but the jaggies and shimmering are way too obvious to me. Now, which card you use is irrelevant so long as it supports FSAA in some fashion. With the GTS, it's a driver thing and I've heard, but cannot confirm, that CM looks good on that card as well. I prefer 3dfx over nVidia, but for the good of the group, I'll put aside my bias and say that either card should work fine with CM. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
  11. I finally had some time to get serious with the Gold demo. I spent 30 minutes just going over each and every unit's LOS and possible LOS in the VoT scenario. I then spent another 30 minutes planning my first move and where I need to send these guys for LOS, terrain masking, good fire positions, etc. So before I even got out of the setup phase, I was an hour into the game. Does that sound about right to you guys or am I just being anal? PS, do a search on setup and see how many posts you pull up ------------------ Jeff Abbott
  12. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Maximus: Well after Hasbro's muck-up of Gunship!, and not to mention the cancellation of M1 Tank Platoon!, they sure haven't got a clue. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Not only do they not have a clue, but they lost me as a customer. No more Atari, Microprose, Hasbro, Wizards of the Coast products for me. Ever! They dissed me one too many times and I refuse to line their coffers any more. I probably would've bought SL too since it's based on the X-Com engine. No mas! I'll pledge allegiance to Big Time Software. Who's with me?!?! ------------------ Jeff Abbott
  13. So tell me Scott, did your mortars fire at the target designated by the Co. HQ? In other words, did you have multiple arty batteries raining down death on the target designated by your Co. HQ? If so, then in VOT, I could see where one target designation by the Co. HQ (for example, the concrete pill) would cause all offboard arty and all on board mortars to fire at that spot depending on the proximity of the Co. HQ to the other spotters/HQs. True? Or do spotters for offboard arty act independently of the HQs? Regards ------------------ Jeff Abbott
  14. I cannot wait for my new V5 5500 to arrive in the mail. First thing I'm gonna do is turn on 4x FSAA and play CM. I'm already getting a woody just thinking how good it'll look. Last night my 10 yr old and I played our first hot seat game. Played the CE mission. We really weren't sure what we were doing (too anxious to read the read me), but man, did we have a blast. The one graphical irritation though was the jaggies and the shimmers. I kept trying to see if that shimmering spot was a distant soldier or a graphical artifact. FSAA will take care of that AND make those 3d rendered units look gorgeous. Bring it on! ------------------ Jeff Abbott
  15. JonS. Thanks for clarifying. I should've specified accuracy vs. ffe. Matt, I'm not a professional grunt (nor an amateur grunt ), just read alot like a lot of you guys and I've come across the 5-10 minutes time (actually, the number I remember was 7 minutes, so to be safe, I said 5-10) a few times. Also, I played M1TP2 alot and talked with the designer and consultants to that game and that is also what they told me. Charles, thanks for the response. I understand the assumption. I also didn't realize they were talking mostly mortars and not the heavy stuff. I need to play obviously... ------------------ Jeff Abbott
  16. I haven't played the demo yet, so excuse me if this has been covered or will become obvious once I start playing, but... In modern combat, it takes between 5-10 minutes between when a arty strike is called and when shells start hitting the ground. By y'alls description, it sounds like at most a 2 minute delay. Is that right? Is that realistic for the 1940's? Just curious since it would obviously make arty much less effective when you're being attacked simply due to the fact that you have to anticipate where they will be 10 minutes from then as opposed to 2 minutes. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
  17. Although I do not understand it, the full 30 MB d'ld worked flawlessly the 2nd time (used Getright) and unzipped flawlessly. Why the auto extractor didn't work with the 4 part d'ld is beyond me. Thanks to all, now I see what the excitement is about. Hopefully, tonight I get to play. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
  18. Ok Pham, I tried to avoid it, but I can't figure out what else to do. BTW, your handle sounds awful familiar. You play M1TP2 by any chance? Post over on combat sim? ------------------ Jeff Abbott
  19. Finally figured out how to unzip. Now I can't run the demo. Damnit. I've spent 3 hours on this already and no love yet . I think it's my sound card. I double click on the executable, get a blank screen asking if I can this 1024x768 screen, press ok, then my sound goes into a loop. I have a Xitel Storm Platinum sound card with A3D reference drivers. Please tell me there is someone in here who has this card (or another A3D card) and knows which drivers are needed. I'm getting close. Muchos Gracias ------------------ Jeff Abbott
  20. OK, got the demo unzipped. I had to d'ld the latest PKSFX file from someplace. Manually started PKSFX and opened each of the 4 zip files. It found some errors, fixed them, and then I could extract the fixed files. Next problem detailed in a separate post. Thanks to all. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
  21. Yes, it should be, but when I double-click, I get an error "No CE signature found". The title for this little gem of a window is "PKSFX for Windows". Somethings not right and I'd really prefer not to have to slog my way through a 30 MB download that may or may not work. Appreciate your prompt reply though. ------------------ Jeff Abbott
  22. I d'ld the 4 parter for the PC. I have it on my hdd right now. Big problem though. winzip 7.0 can't unzip it. I got 10 MB into the 30 MB d'ld just now when I lost the connection - damn, I hate when that happens . I have a lowly 56k modem and life is definitely not good at the moment. So I beg and plead for immediate assistance. How do I unzip these things so I too can experience wargaming nirvana that heretofore I've only read about while lurking here .....Please? Jeff Abbott
