  3. BTW: Whats the grided terrain (mod) that looks like map tiles and is comletely flat? (It looks like trees etc are just shaded but the overall map remains 2d looking not 3d)
  4. Well, if its half as good as MTW i might even be convinced to donate some of the 50gb/month bandwidth on my site. Thx for the info o the models - i didnt know that - ill ahve a play around with the sound files and terrain etc
  5. Newbie to CMBO & CMBB (just took delivery of US bundle pack - yippee). Questions: Are MODs such as sound and terrain useable between both CMBO and CMBB? Ditto for vehicles and such like. IF so: Where can they be obtained from where they are clearly differentiated between. (So not combatmission.com) IS there a Mod manager program ala CC's Config Manager (Auto install and remove MOD files)? Does this work for both CMBO and CMBB, or is there a seperate one for each? Any good site URLs appreciated (other than CMHQ, CM Outpost and Toms).

  8. There's a new heavy rifle being tested atm by the Royal Marines that is capable of firng AP rounds - apparently capable of taking out APCs and some tanks. Its to be used as a sniper rifle also. Cant remember the name off hand im afraid, I believe its a .50 inch calibre. Might be something in Janes, but theres very little info out about it yet (AFAIK). ITs not listed at that site linked above. Edit: Oh - i tell a lie - it might be the Barret. Nope - its the AW-50 - funny video here: http://www.50bmgstore.com/accuracy.mpg You can even buy one for a measly $10,599.00 US dollars : http://www.impactguns.com/store/50bmg.html [ October 12, 2002, 10:14 AM: Message edited by: dd ]
  9. Heh there's no doubt that some campign games have been less than well done on either the "historical" basis or indeed from a good gameplay basis. Having said that some were and many are getting much better. The individual criticisms of some game's manner of doing campaigns are valid, "lets have hit points and laser guns" simply a knee-jerk reaction that is essentially meaningless. CC2 was a fun game, but definately flawed in the areas of resupply and the necessity to refight the same ground over and over in entirely fantasy situations. Shogun was terribly flawed, MTW (Medieval) is a big improvement but still lacks supply lines (although it does now have support costs etc) and many other things are less than "great". Ironically both TW and CM have diverged from the "classical" RTS scene for similar reasons. "Clicking to manage your pig farmers whilst your supoosed to be fighting a battle" isnt very realistic or much fun. The desires of the TW gamers is pushing the next TW incarnation more towards realism with supply lines and such like and the "borg" command element of the tactical game overview is also not something entirely welcomed by the fanatics i.e. they want more realism. The bottom line is: a) Is it feasible to make a campaign. (WE know the answer is yes) Would it add to the popularity without detracting from the current gameplay and playerbase? Obviously the only way to do this is to not change the current "engine", but i dont see that it involves hitpoints, etc etc and a move to becoming another Sudden Strike or CC. Remember, or take note, that the evolution of the Total War series on the campaign side is taking place without any changes to the tactical engine at all. Making a campaign without changing the "game" (as it stands now) seems emminently possible. Remember that an awful lot of gamers like to have "something" that ties the game together, call it story, chronology or campaign. Without that element they can easily seem disjointed or simply less appealing. Grogs and MP'ers generally dont need this, happy to contest single battles or relive well-known or partly known battles, knowing the background chronology and the historical emphasis of each battle...or simply enjoying the MP side of things. So, by no means, does the exclusion of a campaign make a game "bad" but it is "odd" not to have one. Thena gain, a "bad" campaign element would be far worse than no campaign element. Ive got the task to review CM when it arrives - and im allready wondering how to approach this side of it. The audience (readership) is not grog-heavy. How will CM appeal long-term to non grogs without a campaign? How will it appeal to non-grogs and newbies without something "central" pulling the battles all together? Should be interesting and im looking forward to it. [ October 12, 2002, 09:53 AM: Message edited by: dd ]
  10. I dont even have the game yet Dog - its just arrived at my US "intermediary" today - so wont get over to me in the UK till next week. (I refuse to buy the CDV product) The ability to move battle-damaged equipment from one battle to another explains the mod'd "pseudo-campaigns" though. - - - From that linked thread: It was interesting nobody mentioned the campaign element in the manner in which the Total War series has been conducted. Somewhat independent strategic and tactical elements. I suspect that this is what the user-campaigns do though? The Talonsoft EF campaigns never really worked for me, at either level, though. It will be interesting to see how CMBB works without a campaign element. I confess that some appeal for the arrival of the game has gone for myself though.
  11. lol - true, but it also shifts boxes, which.... always a difficult choice. Personally im not only "Not against" niche games im very pro them. I'd like to see how the deelopers state their intent on the issue though. IF its a case of putting off potential sales to retain a focused niche product - well, Kudos to them I say. (Still, it wont stop the question being asked over and over again.) [ October 11, 2002, 05:09 PM: Message edited by: dd ]
  12. Thnak you bastable. /tips hat Edit - still no link to BF commentary though - anybody? [ October 11, 2002, 05:05 PM: Message edited by: dd ]
  13. I dont know anything about why BF wont do a campaign element, or i wouldn't have asked. My member number simply indicates when i signed up - it says nothing about activity, ownership of the game nor how religously i follow every thread or post (rather that i dont). A customer is dissapointed there are no campaigns - its a perfectly legitimate question even if its one in error. He says he is dissapointed. How on earth you can construe that as him dissing the game or BF is beyond me entirely. I hardly see the need to attack others for asking about it. Do you, perhaps, work in CR for Microsoft or Sony Interactive? (j/k) As, clearly indicated the utilisation of campagin features in Strategy games IS a popular one. Im interested in why BF hasnt done it - a link, rather than a personal attack, would be preferable to both myself, and i would imagine, vils.
  14. Thank (insert chosen deity) that the UK isnt part of Europe... oh damn! Curses! [ October 11, 2002, 04:17 PM: Message edited by: dd ]
  15. /em coughs It seemed most "odd" to me that this thread received such negative answers (initially) - especially on a forum where in other threads the "blatant" need for BF to shift more boxes is a reason to not critise the usage of CDV distribution. Its a contradiction. If BF want to make the game more popular to a wider audience - put in a campaign element. As an extra element it detracts nothing from the game and can only add to overall appeal. Does a campaign require continuance of units? No. Does a campaign require the same force to fight "everywhere"? No. Does a campaign require the same units to constantly advance in "skill/experience"? No. Do campaigns tructures require a linear "win only" advancement system? No. (the list goes on and on) The overall lack of objectivity and negativity displayed is rather surprising for such a , generally, proactive board. From the games journalist perspective the lack of a campaign mode is highly unusual, and whilst it may not detract from the game engine, it doesn't add to its broader appeal. It's absence remains a slight negative, or "missing feature". Although, the reticence displayed is common amongst grognard heavy games forums, so its not all that surprising...and is really nothing more than the "reality versus gameplay" arguement. /em shrugs I don't and asking around others who don't play CM it appears that one commonality is a lack of a campaign mode. One man's "pollution" is another mans bread and butter. It's a bit "hasty" to dismiss it so casually. - - - IT's good to see their are some attempts at community "workarounds" but it still doesn't explain (to me) the abscence of an "official" campaign. (Talonsofts EF/WF and EiF camapgins weren't all that great or extensive but were put there for the very appeal of a campaign to the gamer. The popularity of campaigns can only be highlighted by the succes of other RTS semi-realistic games such as the C&C series, PG series and TW series) If anybody could point me to developer quotes/articles/posts on this issue i'd be most interested. It seems a logical extention to the game engine/game - but i may well be missing something.
  16. Having actually been set alight by a molotov cocktail dont knock the "psychological effects" associated with either yourself, or your vehicle, being set on fire. Ive seen lots of folk panic even under test conditions with fire-extinguisher close to hand. Fire is very much something the human mind is condition to fear, add to that beign stuck inside a metl coffin stacked with explosive ammo, unable to go outside due to lots of little bits of lead trying to get you and... As I dont have the game yet (waiting on US copy to get to the UK) i cant tell - but how often do molotovs cause crew to bail out without actually damaging the AFV. Is this modelled at all?
  17. Sorry but thats total rubbish - the rank and file Brits in WWI defined "survivable wound" as: A british Officer being shot in the head.
  18. ie6 doesnt like that java btw - best to change it to dhtml, xml or static html (or flash) anyway
  19. Aye but he's right, us brits had some pretty woeful tanks. Some rare axceptions, some exceptions in certain areas, but overall, woefull... although the atrocious tactics didn't help either.
  20. She let me live aye, but she won't be taking me to any more christenings (In truth she doesnt let me anywhere near any churches as she's convinced i'll get struck by lightening, she also gets edgy when we get near goats now....living in Croydon we don't have to worry about virgins...)
  21. weren't sherman's nicknamed "Ronson's" by the Brits? (As in Ronson cigarette lighters "They light every time!")
