I have had a number of incidents lately where one tank was hull down, while the other was not. Hull down status is not always occurring with both shooter and target. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. Croda, feel free to come over to the Peng Challenge thread and abuse Meeks there, if you like. The other Lads find that sort of thing vastly entertaining. And jshandorf, you might want to stop by too. Hmm, TC north suburbs—we'll put out some potpourri. MEEKS! This isn't a bloody franchise operation, you know! Gather up your friends and skitter back to the Cesspool where you belong. People are so tired of abusing Shaw he's started abusing himself just to keep things going. Don't want to go, eh? 6.
quote:
I am all for full squad representation (as a toggle, of course) and other things like tire/tread tracks and dead bodies for each KIA.

It amazes me that no matter how many times BTS(not people posting on the Board, but BTS themselves) explains that these three features will not, and cannot, be added to the game, people keep returning to them and insisting they must be added to the game. The Developer's (again, not Board members, but the game's creators) have discussed these innumerable times, at some length, and explained why they're not in, will not be in, and cannot be in, certainly not for CM1, and very unlikely for CM2. I understand why people would find some of these things interesting, but besides the fact that technical issues make them impractical(and not, as people keep saying, merely to keep low-end machines CM capable; BTS has stated that even the highest end machines out there would have trouble with any of these aspects, let alone all three), I think putting in any of these, let alone all three, would have a horribly negative impact on Fog of War. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 8.
quote:
Originally posted by patboivin: No, don't bother. It's just people talking back and forth about two different types of little rodents: lemmings and something else. Now people are posting to it just to see how many messages that thread can reach.

Well, I like that. And you a good Canadian lad, and all. Much of the Thread has been a stalwart defense of Canadians. Of course, a great deal more has been low and cowardly attacks on Canadians. We could use a few real Canadians showing up to defend their lovely nation. And its been days since there was any discussion of the rodent thing. The attention span of 'the Lads' is very short, and hamsters are on the backburner right now. They're back to doing what they do best: challenging each other to games, and calling each other all sorts of unbelievably foul things. For any 'English as a Second Language' peopel, just show up, explain your situation, and the increasingly multi-national Cesspool will either find some one to taunt and abuse you in your native language, or keep the basic concepts easy to grasp. We're a very welcoming thread, in a very unwelcoming way. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 9. Whoa, I missed this thread earlier. Rob/1 you seem like a nice guy, seriously, and I would regret your leaving over anything that's gone down here lately, especially if it was specific to you. I know I posted a remark in the 'Thunderstorms' thread that was silly, but it wasn't anything aimed at you personally, I was just wandering. I think a lot of the 'flaming' has started to calm down, lately, as some of the people who were irritating and stirring people up have left, and people have begun to relax and regain their sense of humour. Think about it before you go. Any member of a community who contributes to that community is a part of that community, and their departure is a loss. Lets keep the departures to those who have nothing to contribute, and whose loss is a gain for the community. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. They told him nothing, except that the sky might fall on their heads.
 10.
quote:
Originally posted by L.Tankersley: Did we ever get a definitive answer that this behavior was caused by fanatacism vice seeking the only visible cover (the obstacle occupied by the enemy)?

I don't think there was a specific response, but I go by the rule of thumb that if a unit charges, shows great aggression or even whacked behaviour, but never goes to panicked/broken/routed state, then it was fanatical. Any normal unit charging and taking casualties/massive fire, but never panics and breaks, is, I would think, definitely fanatical, as under the game engine fanatical units are incapable of hitting these stages. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. They told him nothing, except that the sky might fall on their heads.
 11.
quote:
Originally posted by Miyamoto Musashi: Ok, I admit it... I don't get it. Have newbie members begun resurrecting old, obsolete posts? Or is this some attempt at a joke?

Miyamoto Musashi, please understand that relative newbies are not doing this, one whacked loon is doing it: Meeks. I haven't a clue why he is doing this, but I do think he should refrain, as I think he is starting to irritate some people. Others who've posted thinking Musashi was being hostile, please check the dates on the original post. This thing is from when Combat Mission first shipped, not some recent gripe, and he was right at that time, half the threads on the Board were people posting to say they'd gotten their copy. No big deal when a few people do it and are welcomed on to the board as newcomers, but slightly irritating when tons of people were doing it. As Meeks seems incapable of resisting his urge to drag old threads on to the Board, please all, check the dates on posts that seem odd (or even if they don't), before responding. Elijah, you might make some better choices about what to drag out of the bin. Some older posts are interesting or funny, but sometimes this tactic is just resulting in irritation. Personally, I don't want to see more people irritated with each other, especially over something that's just confusing and silly. If you have to do this, use a little judgement. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. They told him nothing, except that the sky might fall on their heads.
 12. Brightly Hey, everyone! I've got the Germans singing "Finnegan's Wake"! Isn't it awful? Now, all the French chaps, let's have a go at "Scots Wha Ha'". Ah! Guinness! 13.
quote:
Originally posted by jshandorf: Also, are you saying that if I had infantry in the open and as a TC I would only use the MGs on them? Your nuts! Blow them away I think would be the correct assessment here. Use all your firepower to the maximum effectiveness to destroy the enemy. That would include I believe the Main Gun. In combat you never know how long you are going to survive so make an impact when you can and be decisive. Jeff [This message has been edited by jshandorf (edited 09-06-2000).]

Sorry, I can't begin to remember which thread it was in, but I do remember a post from BTS that there are often cases in which a tank will stick with MGs not only because they perceive it as the most effective weapon, but because it in fact is the most effective weapon. They pointed out that many tank guns were specifically designed for killing other tanks, and that AFV HE shells weren't necessarily all that devestating against infantry targets. Tanks designed for infantry support, or as assault guns, such as StuH42s or the Shermans with the 105s, were probably more effective with their HE ammo, and might well behave differently. Also, this is a little foggier in my memory, but I believe they made a point that the TacAI will look at ammo availability, and make some choices when HE rounds fall below a certain point. As far as not targeting 'light guns', I don't know, I've never had a tank not use its main gun on any kind of gun that it had spotted, unless it was only armed with AP ammo. Then it just MGed the heck out of them. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 15. Hmm, I will play either side without prejudice in CM1, but usually end up playing the Allies. In CM2 I think I will again play either side, but for choice will probably usually go German. Actually, what I've realized I'm really kind of anxious to see would be CM4, of all things, the Early War. After seeing and playing with all the killer equipment of the late war, a period that I was most familiar with before I got CM, I think it would be extraordinarily different and challenging to come to grips with the equipment of the early war years. I think Pzkw Is & IIs and such, against Renaults and other, unfamiliar equipment would be extremely challenging. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 18.
quote:
Originally posted by Mark IV: In defense of Meeks... no, let me start over. This is Officer IV, Cesspool Police (CPs), and we understand you've seen a fugitive here. Mr. Meeks was actually given a fairly benign mission (not by me) to recruit Mr. Croda, who's talent for creative invective was noticed by others, in an unrelated thread. That Mr. Meeks has exceeded his authority, slipped off his meds, and bungled the whole thing is obvious. Now he is yet again bothering normal people. He is only annoying, not dangerous.

Hey, Mark IV, I'm sorry. Hitting Meeks in the head just doesn't seem to have any damn effect any longer. Peng's busy, and I was away today, so he got free again. MEEKS, YOU HORRIBLE LITTLE MAN! How many times do I have to tell you, you half-witted squeeky toy, we don't proselytize? They have to want to come to the Cesspool. Now stop annoying good folk by starting your lunatic threads and giving Steve pointless work to do shutting them down. Oh, and Bates Minor, Meeks is harmless, unless you're locked for hours and hours in a sewer with him. Then he's a right nutter. Still, a little charity, young Bates. We all have to look at your handle, after all, and the joke was pointless before you even signed up. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. And this, I think, would be relatively easy to patch. BTS: Care to chime in on this or the QB/river request?

I like Leland's suggestion, and have before when this idea has come up. As far as knowing terrain: once you go to place units, you'll get a chance to see as much of it as the other guy. Now, a person who perhaps created the map might have a more thorough and intimate knowledge, but that's easy to get around by having some third friendly party design a map for you, then both parties in a PBEM, for example, come at it equal. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. Hmm, I don't know, maybe she should go over to the Peng Challenge thread, she has the right attitude. It is rather disgusting there, but maybe if we clubbed Meeks unconscious, locked bauhaus in a one of the side tunnels, handed out some general medication...no, it just wouldn't work. If they're going to come by, they have to see it like it normally is. Besides, we're running out of meds. She might like Professor Doktor Hamster X, though. 21.
quote:
You guys gotta come up with an official name for yourselves. I hate having to type "the guys from the cesspool" when I could just use some generalized term that labels all of you.

Well, I like to just call them 'the Lads'. And I'm pretty sure the one that's not human is Peng, rather than myself. I'm all too human, I'm afraid. Oh, we also still use the Peng Challenge Thread, and also MuthaBeautiful Thread. But Minnesota Joe did come up with the Cesspool, and it resonated with the Lads. 23. Ah, thank goodness, our sense of irony and humour is returning. Quick question that might be addressed to the Sudden Strike publishers/merchandisers: If one cannot play war, why is that young woman in the picture dressed like that? 25.
quote:
Originally posted by Jsoh: What exactly is "hull down", and what is the advantage of it? I think I understand how to achieve it by reading the forum (hunt up to a ridge) but I don't know why I would want to do that. Do you have to be unbuttoned for it to work as well? Also, what's with the assimilating? Why was I assimilated? Are the three angle measures given so that you can tell how much armor you will have to penetrate depending on what altitude you are to the opposing tank? I.e., the more altiude, the less armor because there is less slope? Thanks! Jsoh

There are others who will probably give you better answers, but they are probably all asleep, so I will give you interim answers as best I can. Hull down refers to the tactic of getting your tank into a position (relative to an enemy gun or vehicle), so that a fold of the land, or wall, or whatever, blocks LOS to your vehicle except for the turret (thus allowing you to shoot at them, and them to return fire but only at the harder to hit turret, as the majority of your vehicle is covered) CM Borg is a reference/play upon the popular Star Trek series. The Borg are a hive culture that absorbs all others into their own, basically as raw materials. The joke here is that, as one enthusiasitic about Combat Mission, you had been absorbed into this community, and are now one with the collective entity. (Lately, that collective entity has been showing a lot of fragmentation and deterioration, but hopefully it will stop soon ). This last point is tougher to do quickly, especially for a non-grog. Basically, armour's slope adversely affects the penetration of AP(armour piercing ammo). Slope can be a function of the aspect of the tank because of the terrain it is on (higher eleveation, tilted because of sloping terrain, etc.) or because the armour on the tank is sloped as part of design. Someone else will have to give you the technical aspects (even simple tech aspects) of the effect of armour sloping. The examples given in CM are some rough guides to give you an idea what your chances are given your gun's penetrative power against another tank's designed in 'slope', or other aspects of terrain effect (harder for you to know in CM). ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared.
