2. Dearly Beloved, we are here today ('cause you opened this post )to pay homage and to remember our dear friend who has gone beyond. Combat Mission - Beta. He was removed from life support today (ie removed from my hard drive) his "final" combat mission completed. Let us take a moment to consider the vagries and vissicitudes of life, how we come into the world only a half formed beta in our parents eyes, we struggle to find acceptance, achieve respect and only to find that our time in this mortal coil passes all too quickly. That we too are often shoved aside by muscular glitzy newcomers, that we in retospect become frumpy, neglected and ultimately cast aside for the new face in town. So too with CM Beta. But in it's brief period of incandesence Oh how bright it shone. CMB transformed us, it touched our lives (just ask our wives ) This simple game, this England (oops wrong eulogy) made us better people. For those of us who labored in the hexanognal hell of pbm (no email then me buckoos)know all to well how our hopes and dreams were SLOWLY dashed. Til CMB appeared. He was not always perfect (CoolColj notwithstanding) He had his faults, but what beta could engender 43,000 posts in 4,000+ threads? CM beta showed us the promised land. A grail to seek, that while it may ultimately elude us nonetheless shows us the land of milk and honey. But grieve not for Combat Misson Beta, for from his loins has srung a new voice in the land, Gold, and ultimately Final! (and CM2, CM3 etc) for as the patriarchs of old he has spread his seed and found it good. CM Beta is no longer with us, but let us cherish his memory, partake of his joys (4 Shermans taken out by one StuGIII baby) and grieve not. For CM Beta shall always be in our hearts even if Combat Mission is on our hard drives. So console yourselves, he is in a better place an we are better for having this brief time in this mortal world. But his legacy lives on in us. Combat Mission Beta created a COMMUNITY. What greater gift and could any other beta do as much? Ahhhhh, Combat Mission, we hardly knew ya. I invite you to approach the pulpit and share any thoughts or tributes on Beta and what he meant to you.
 3.
quote:
Originally posted by Big Time Software: that the key was to knock the outlying defenses out of effective commission and then to send the flame thowers in only *AFTER* an entire platoon secured a safe route to the target.

Just last night I managed it (and I have the screen shots to prove it) but as Steve said it's a coordinated dance. The AI parked the concrete MG buker in the absolute center of Plomville. The usual carnage had ensued in town and in the surronding hills. The 105's and 81's flattned a good part of town w/ exploding pressure waves everywhere, but the bunker held out. I advanced rifle and engineering squads supported by a Sherman up the road, and actually advanced the tank on it's flank, with the rifle squad in place and the tank at least hitting it once (I admidt to telling the tank to bug out so the Flamethrower had a chance) and everyone firing, the flamethrower got into position and..... can you say "barbeque", boys and girls? However, since the bunkers orientation was straight at the allied lines, by coming up the right hand side of the main road I was out of LOS for most of the approach. So AI may have made tactical orientation mistake.
 4. By day, lawyer {mainly Social Security disability - although did almost 20 yrs as divorce and criminal lawyer } Am I really the only one ? By night CM / Forum / CMHQ / Annex junky. Luckily my wife hits sleepy time at around 9pm because she gets up at 4:30 am. So the evening belongs to CM, of course I am getting bags and cicles under my eyes
 5.
quote:
Originally posted by Moon: You can always order a Sherman to fire a smoke round (if it has any smoke rounds left, of course) in front of the tank and reverse it.

But the AI can manage this in same turn. Can we deliberately plan the move , issuing orders to advance, fire on engaged target, reverse and fire smokeround? Actually as I think about it, Perhaps area target just in front of tank w/ smoke, issue order to hunt/advance just in front of smoke area, and reverse back into/behind area of impact o that by then, the smoke becomes effective? Hmmmmmmmmmm have to try that one.
 6. In VoT (no spoilers here) the AI had a sherman move into LOS, take a shot at my german forces, backup and popped smoke. In the beta, the Stug's could do this, but I want to know how I, if playing the americans could do the same. Is it totally involuntary so that human players have no control. Very effective tactic in VoT. Tried a search but only real info related to beta.
 7. tried to figure where to put this so I decided to revive thread When you say everything is modeled you MEAN it. There I was in Valley with the camea up over the starting line area. I noticed some black round things flashing across the screen going up. I came to realize that I was above two mortar units and I was seeing the shells shortly after leaving the tube on their way!!!! We have seen the fall of 105 etc in the beta LD , but this was so cool. Just think they REALLY do what they say and model things that you usually do not see! Way to go guys. It's these little things that really floor me.
 8.
quote:
Originally posted by Ol' Blood & Guts: Once I pound the enemy locations a bit with artillery, I try and do a "bonzai" charge

OBG don't you meam the infamous bonsai charge thru the hedge
 9. I was wondering what would be the reccomended tactic for infantry assults against armor. Not the 'zooks or 'schrecks but squad assaults, with at least chance of knocking out tank or half track. How close do you have to be so that squad uses weapons other than rifles? Thanks
 10. You know what they say, Once you've gone Mac, you never go back! (proud owner over the years of: apple II, Mac 512, SE 30, PowerBook 1400 upraded to G3) and yhe piece de resistance my iMac SE Dv) It's an Apple thing.
 11. I have decided that the evil genius' at BTS are part of a conspiracy, prob involved w/ Trilateral Commission to undermine our economy and bring our captialist system to it's knees. I suspect that I am not the only one just punching the clock, fairly unfocused and NOT at all productive today. Just like a junkie I've got the shakes until I can get out of here and get home to "my pretty" (or precious to you Tolkien fans) [This message has been edited by jdmorse (edited 05-10-2000).]
 12. Colin: Bummer man For what it's worth CM Gold runs smooth as a babies bottom on my iMac DV SE. So bringing it in line w/ those specs gives you something to shoot at. I had similar problems running Falcon 4.0 on my iMac. The program wouldn't recognize the 3d accel. and ran under "software' One of the problems was quicktime comp.perhaps, but you are prob upgraded to QT4? (Reply to another of your posts elsewhere - don't even think about cancelling pre-order, it's just the heat guy, it'll work out , be cool, We need ya man!
 13. Valley of trouble....Naw vally of Doom valley of terror valley of I've got a bad feeling about this valley of lions and tigers and bears valley of something real bad is going to happen Valley of I just wet my pants Really, BTS you have restored the terror and fright into wargames!! Just started Valley of... and am in intial order phase, why do I feel like I never will see my children again as I send them down that hill. Congrats on making it so fun to be sh**ing bricks rather than playing so loosey goosey. You are making us CARE!
 14. A thread on what we like or are impressed by, the little thngs might be interesting. 1. I noticed that the gold demo overwrote the "alias" icon for the Beta version. So instead of the generic icon I've been staring at I see a tank in profile. ( it still leads to the Beta tho) 2. I for one was pleased by the opening credits and front end, music swelling and the start screen picture. Great art work. The other choice screens have nice feel to them. 3. Birds and distant arty sounds gave "You Are There" (refernce to an old Walter Cronkite show for you youngsters - some of us still remeber) 4. Smoke and vehicle fires are awesome. The POTD's didin't convey them adequately 5???? your choices, ther are others for me but let's hear from you [This message has been edited by jdmorse (edited 05-10-2000).]
 15. Steve and Charles and all of you wonderful crazy fools who have given birth to this wonderful child, Thanks
 16.
quote:
Originally posted by Fionn: Also there's a common misconception about the thumbs up, thumbs down thing but I'll save that for a trivia quiz later

As I remember it, didn't a closed fist mean life and a thumb extended in any direction meant so long sucker? I know the film perpetuated the thumbs up-thumbs down myth.
 17. infamous double post.....oops sorry [This message has been edited by jdmorse (edited 05-08-2000).]
 18.
quote:
Originally posted by Speedy: Gladiator was a good movie, however I have a few nitpicks with the initial battle.... I thought I saw stirrups on the cavalry in the initial battle.

Yeah I think you are right. I caught that when Maximus talked about how his kid had problems standing in the saddle.....wasn't it the mongols who originated the stirrups? Before seeing the movie access http://www.salve.edu/~romanemp/commod.htm for a quick summary of Commodus' reign and "actual history" that the film took liberities.Even with the inconsisitencies noted above the film does rock. It transports you THERE and shows that human nature hasn't changed much in 2000 years. $6.50 a ticket here in the NW. [This message has been edited by jdmorse (edited 05-08-2000).]
 19.
quote:
Originally posted by Berlichtingen: Its not the "Macintosh Way!" Manuals are for PC users

Ain't that the truth. I have always felt that if I couldn't figure it out, it wasn't worth getting. Manuals were for weanies and pc's [duck here at brickbats] as a dyed in the wool Mac person manuals were "okay" after about one year after purchase, or to brace up a book at lunch! 20. Rickie: There are over 44,000 posts to this forum with only an early beta version available should tell you something about what we who are avidly playing the are experiencing. macusers (since 1985 for me) have a built in distrust of instructions. We tend to point and click to figure it out. I had a bit of the same experience as you describe. Go back and carefully read the Movement section of the instructions. Once you have units set up (by hiiting GO) you select a unit, then hit the space key. That will give menu for orders, use the cursor to indicate from where to where. Remeber it is a turn based game. Give your units orders for that turn, hit go, watch the result and do the same for next turn. A little careful readiing and experimentation will reveal a world of wargaming that makes CC pale in comparison. Good luck John
 21. Whooeee, an M-80 under a trash can pulverizwd the USS Pennslyvania, scattered a Jagdpanther and sent the trashcan about 25 feet straight up!!!!
 22. I have noted, (and didn't find it in a search or in demo documentation) that the LOS indicator changes color as you move it. I am not talking about the red/black portion, rather the blue changes shading from bright to darker shades. I assume that it is a representation of decreasing effectiveness of sighting. However is there some quantification of the coloration and what does it mean to targeting. A dark blue is still seen after all
 23.
quote:
Originally posted by 0311: Guys, I am in the fight of my life. Just got the word that my wife is going to the in laws Memorial Weekend. I also have planned to play my new CM that weekend and have been hording coffee for two months in preperation.

This is a fight you can't win. Even if you win you'll lose. What's your acceptable casuality level? Outside of the few, wives and girlfriends just do not see the attraction. Or worse they see it as a rival competitor for your attention However, you have negotiation leverage. Worse case senario is that you go to the mattresses and BTS (due to an act of god or UPS/US Post Office) can't deliver, or the Gold is unavoidably delayed. So there you are scorched earth and nuthin to show for it. So be magnaminious and trade off for something else, like 2 weeks of no naggin' while you explore CM, or something else. Your best leverage is now. Hey if the inlaws have a computer take it along or perhaps download the Gold demo, maybe you'll convert someone. Good Luck Trooper, you'll need it
 24. But what of us who ordered immed on seeing the demo when we accidently stumbled across the site. SOL? [This message has been edited by jdmorse (edited 04-26-2000).]
