2. Oo-oo-ooo-e-e-e-e-e... Actually, I have hit refresh since I left work this evening! Eee-ee--e-e-e-e-oo-o-oo-ooo.... Is there a monkey smilie?
3. That says it all, I believe! Howitzer (It's almost an hour after my original post! Life is good! So's the gold demo!) [This message has been edited by Howitzer (edited 05-09-2000).]
4. Nope. My relationship with CM is just fine, thanks. And, I don't think CM is jealous of the other games, either. Later, Steve C.
5. Hey Everybody! First: I agree that one should not take more than 30 minutes to complete a turn's planning. I try to hold myself to that, but sometimes I'll spend up to an hour. Second: I would love to finish a game in a weekend, but I doubt that will ever happen in my PBEM games. Why? For all the reasons mentioned here in this thread, with which I will not bore you. But, I'll sum them up by saying: "Get a life!" (I mean, I love CM, but there are limits. And, if I don't make them, my wife will! ) Third: Personally, I am happy to receive one or two turns a day. But I am tolerant up to about one or two turns a week. Fourth: TCP/IP will be THE way to play QUICK CM games, for ladder games or otherwise. But, not all games need to be played quickly. Fifth: DEF, you have WAY too much time on your hands. (I'm jealous.) Later, Steve C. 7. PL -- (1) Wholeheartedly agree with the piracy issue. (It never ceases to amaze me that people consider software free to use just because they can duplicate it. They don't call it piracy without reason! ) (2) The first or second day preordering was available...I did! Later, Steve C.
8. Most excellent! A super job by all involved. Thanks for the work...now, do it again! Later, Steve C.
9. Hey Peter, No offense, but... If it's still on YOUR hard drive... IT'S NOT RELEASED! (But, the DSL is warmed-up and waiting. ) Later, Steve C.
10. Really good stuff going into this thread...I'll add my small bit to it. Most of the defensive points have been covered, but here's one that I find very helpful ASSUMING that your defense is not in a position to be easily flanked. Placing infantry squads in the very back and on the ground floor of buildings they are defending increases their kill ratio vs. enemy squads close assaulting that building. This works especially well with German SMG squads, where close in firepower is awesome. How do I know this? Experience as the attacker! Later, Steve C.
11. Lindan! All I have to say is "You 'Da Man!" Count me in, especially since it is motorcycle weather! Steve C.
12. Johan, Do you always tempt death so brazenly? Steve C. [This message has been edited by Howitzer (edited 04-01-2000).]
13. Mega-Kudos! The movie was great (even the agonizing download time of a couple of minutes via ADSL ). So many stars, so little time, but to me the neat shot was the jeep flying (literally) over the hill alongside the Shermans. WAY cool. Steve C.
14. YES! YES! YES! Thanks for the hard work and the updates...now let's see, I have 3+ weeks of vacation left, I can send the kids to camp, and the wife to??? Oh well, I'll work it out somehow! Steve C.
15. I think the new flame job is a noticeable improvement on the original/DEMO rendition. But, the real S*T*A*R of the show was the Wirblewind! Steve C.
16. Bill, The ladder demo page looks good. My advice would be to keep it as simple as possible. And, I like the graphics. I'll second the suggestion for the player info that you've already planned to adopt. For me, I plan to play ladder and non-ladder games. I enjoy finding out where I stand relative to other players (so I know how much I need to improve), and sometimes I just enjoy a good game. Thanks for the effort. Looks like it will be fun. Regards- Steve C.
17. Here, here for Cincinnati! Out with it Matt-boy! Steve C.
18. Chris says:
quote:
...more genius PC owners (like me...)

Yeah, right! But, then again, there's a first for everything... Let's see now, if your statement is true, that would make the score: PeeCee "Geniuses" -- 1 PeeCee "Lemmings" -- 1 billion and growing Wait here, I'll go look for the nearest cliff and report back! 19. Michael, I have a Mac, and have played several games PBEM -- all against peecee types -- with no problems. The file CM creates on the Mac doesn't have a filename extension (like .txt), but it is still a text file. As a general rule, I rename my "PBEM File" with a different name, and I always include the .txt extension so PC guys won't have any problems (just in case). Verify the file you are getting is indeed a text file by trying to open it in SimpleText or the word processor of your choise. It should have a line at the top reading...
quote:
----------------- Play-By-Email Data Follows This Line -----------------

...and one at the end reading...
quote:
---------------------- End of Play-By-Email Data -----------------------

...and a bunch of gibberish in between. If you cannot open the file, then something is wrong. Verify with your opponent that he isn't compressing it in an unworkable way, either externally or internally to his e-mail program. Hope something above helps! Regards, Steve C. [This message has been edited by Howitzer (edited 03-19-2000).]
20. Babra: I laughed like crazy at work reading your post! Thanks for getting me fired! Steve C.
21. Sorry Dave-o! While I DO have other interests that occasionally pull me away from CM (photography, reading, etc.), and more important things in my life (God, wife, children, friends), and many, many entertainment choices (Nintendo, cable, movie theatres, parks, travel, etc...)... I will patiently wait for CM... ...and, yes, on the PC (Mac actually); can't see playing it on my TV with a Nintendo controller... ...and, no, those other things won't divert my attention, money or CM pre-order $. Why? Because there is NO COMPARABLE GAME right now, nor is their likely to be one in the near future. Wargamers are not the same as FPS players, generally, and so your entire market rationale goes into the toilet. (Someone rescue the baby, first!) BTW, you would probably have predicted Apple going out of business about 2 years ago, correct? And, where are they now? 10:1 stock growth? Growing market share like crazy. Still #1 in education, BECAUSE OF COMPELLING PRODUCTS PEOPLE WANT! Also, many analysts predicted in the early '80's that Ford would NEVER increase its market share for automobiles, because foreign marques and GM would forever dominate. And, where are they now? Fighting for the top spot, with SUPER PRODUCTS PEOPLE WANT! I predict BTS will still be making quality software (most likely incredibly cool wargames) for years to come. Heck, I'd preorder for CM2, CM3 and CM4 RIGHT NOW! Thanks for your input Dave...now, on your bike! Steve C. PS My shirt is more of a golden color, not brown. 22. I'm sure someone knows the answer to this... I have noticed that my (German) halftracks in LD cannot make it over the low stone wall by the wheatfield in the German setup area. My question is this: Assuming a (heavier, more robust) tank can breech such a wall, can the halftracks then move through the breeched portion? Thanks, Steve C.

24. Germanboy: I thought the SPR ending was much deeper than "America, America"...it was a story of a veteran reflecting on his life, for which comrades gave theirs, and attempting to measure it against a very high standard. It could have been told by other nationalities and at other times with equally important reflection.
