1. A couple of factoids: -- The Japanese had an extensive biological warfare research facility at Harbin in Manchuria were they did testing on live subjects(mostly Chinese civilians, but also some Allied POWs, IIRC). This was, incidentally, the subject of a recently aired History Channel documentary. -- The U.S. was not a signatory to the particular treaty that banned chemical warfare. We never used chem. weapons (apart from WP). The OSS came up with a plan to use them in the Pacific as part of a "maskirova" operation, but it never went through with the plan. The OSS also attempted to use botulinum toxin on the Japanese in Burma, but the operation failed when native resistance operatives tested the toxin on donkeys without result. Too bad they didn't know that donkeys are one of the few mammals immune to botulinum. ------------------ Ethan ----------- Das also war des Pudels Kern! -- Goethe
 2.
quote:
Originally posted by Germanboy: LOL - let's face it, the legions would have made mince meat out of any WW II army, those were the men! Trajan rules!

Perhaps, but could they have run with a fully supplied MG42 with Lafette Tripod Mount and Volksklobürste? ------------------ Ethan ----------- Das also war des Pudels Kern! -- Goethe
 3. He recently posted on the CMMC mailing list, so one can assume that he remains sound of wind and limb. Unless sinister dark smiley forces have stolen his e-mail address and turned him into a pod person. ------------------ Ethan ----------- Das also war des Pudels Kern! -- Goethe
 4. What I find particularly laughable is the idea that somehow SPR marginalizes the British contribution to victory in the ETO. Last I looked, UK and Commonwealth troops were pretty thin on the ground at Omaha Beach. Oddly enough, you wouldn't have found too many US GIs at Juno either. One could just as easily say that Sink the Bismarck marginalizes the U.S. contribution to the Battle of the Atlantic. Furthermore, if one wants to see a British movie distorting the history of the War, look no further than David Lean's excellent "The Bridge Over the River Kwai". Colonel Bogey indeed! ------------------ Ethan ----------- Das also war des Pudels Kern! -- Goethe

Mmm, pie. I think I'll go have a slice right now... ------------------ Ethan ----------- Das also war des Pudels Kern! -- Goethe PS -- It always depresses me to see foreigners with a better command of my native tongue than products of our own "education" system. Perhaps MG Mannschaft should spend more time behind McGuffey's Reader and less behind an MG42 (with or without Lafette Tripod Mount) [This message has been edited by Hakko Ichiu (edited 06-05-2000).]
 6.
quote:
Originally posted by Germanboy: These guys were gutsy, oh my. I would have been somewhere in Sweden at this point. Hats off. Can I have Finnish loan crews for my Schrecks?

Yes, maybe they wouldn't break and run like your panty-waisted Luftwaffe retreads What has yet to be established is the effectiveness of Finnish Porzellanspülbecken teams, given the lack of plumbing infrastructure in the area around Lake Ladoga. 8.
quote:
Originally posted by Germanboy: I wonder how Steve and Charles are going to model that in CM2... Where we will also finally see the kitchen sink, I have an inkling...

But how will BTS model the variants of the Soviet ÏÔÈÏÖÅÅ ÍÅÓÔÏ? And will the Cossack ÐÏÓÕÄÏÍÏÅÞÎÁÑ ÍÁÛÉÎÁ regiments be included with their various detergent loadouts? Without answers to these questions, I will refuse to pre-order. ------------------ Ethan ----------- Das also war des Pudels Kern! -- Goethe
 9. I had similar problems playing CE via PBEM against an opponent using Mac. One of my Shermans would not respond to orders. i tried reloading the turn without effect. After we played out the turn, the tank was responsive again. ------------------ Ethan ----------- Das also war des Pudels Kern! -- Goethe
 10. By day, I fly black helicopters out of Area 51 on the orders of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Bilderbergs, or the Small Green Aliens -- whichever comes first. By night, I am an Initiate in the Ancient Order of Bavarian Illuminati. Fnord. This is all fnord top secret, of course. Damn, I guess I shouldn't have told you this. Damn, fnord, damn, damn!!!! Now I'm going to have to fnord shoot you all. ------------------ Ethan ----------- Das also war des Pudels Kern! -- Goethe

 16. S&C: In my current PBEM game I can "see" an enemy sound contact that is 10 meters(according to the LOS tool) from one of my units. When I attempt to target it, however, the targetting tool gives the distance as 107 meters! What gives? I can send you a screenshot if that would help. ------------------ Ethan ----------- Das also war des Pudels Kern! -- Goethe
 17.
quote:
Originally posted by Lanzfeld: 1. Do AI tanks ever unbutton after buttoning up? After the close action settles down, it would be to their advantage.

I've had tanks refuse a direct command to unbutton even when they faced no immediate threat. 19. <Sigh> Friday A.M. Now my e-mail server is hors de combat again, and my-deja.com is still down ------------------ Ethan ----------- Das also war des Pudels Kern! -- Goethe
 20.
quote:
Originally posted by Germanboy: Okay Ethan, fez up! How much did you pay our IT people (who could not find their own feet in broad daylight, let alone the faults on our email server) to keep the sad truth about your situation from you?

The sad truth about my situation?? 21.
quote:
Originally posted by Germanboy: I actually have one, but only stuffed/zipped files will work on that one, Yahoo is converting PBEM files automatically to full text attachments in the email body for me, and those don't work most of the time. Also have the problem that the few times I sent PBEM files through Yahoo they crashed my opponent's computer. Otherwise I would love to do that. Any suggestions, or similar problems?

Also, I think Andreas's mail goes through yahoo.de anyway, at least that's what the 'unsent mail' messages I received seemed to indicate. As a side note, while my private e-mail seems to be working fine now, my public e-mail address @ my-deja.com is down for the next 4 days. ------------------ Ethan ----------- Das also war des Pudels Kern! -- Goethe
 22.
quote:
Originally posted by Germanboy: Obviously, our mailserver is the IT equivalent to a (insert crappy tank here) and breaks down as soon as it has work to do. It is called British engineering, you know. The only other explanation I have is that our network engineers want to keep you from crying and hiding in a corner, by keeping the turn away from you. In the spirit of the old alliance, you know. Why oh why am I talking to someone who obviously lost the last remnants of reason on 2 DM/bottle Aldi wine years and years ago, as we all could witness in your spurious claims about the Volksspüle?

Ha! Ha! And again I say, Ha! My elite plumbing platoon is just waiting to clean your pipes. Soon you'll find a new meaning for the term "special relationship". ------------------ Ethan ----------- Das also war des Pudels Kern! -- Goethe
 23. Andreas, Your mailserver seems to have been on the Fritz (pun intended) for the last 12 hours or so. My latest turn in our duel is still sitting somewhere in the ether. Personally, I think this is a pathetic attempt to stave off your doom for a few hours more. Now, go away, or I shall taunt you a second time! ------------------ Ethan ----------- Das also war des Pudels Kern! -- Goethe
