  1. I've done two scenarios but only one is posted at the depot. We enjoy hearing the feedback though. If something pleases you in a mod and/or in a scenario, by all means let the author hear about it. Try "Ouistreham" at the depot next time you are shopping for game files. ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. IN HOC SIGNO VINCES
  2. Hello Gunslinger, I remember you from the comp.sys...flight-sim newsgroup. Glad to see that you have found Combat Mission. This game has saved me from the agony of having to buy a new box. It's quite nice to be able to play a game in a 3D environment at 1024x768 that doesn't bog down the system. The last flight sims that I've had fun playing are Europeon Air War, Longbow 2, F15. As much as I loved Falcon 4, the game just didn't mate with my box well. I guarantee that your experience with CM will be a good one and that you'll be begging for more. You may not (cough) even miss the flight sim genre at all. Welcome to the forum and spread the news far and wide. When you get up to speed, send me a PBEM file setup patched to the latest version and we'll have a go at it. ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. 3. I've experienced fanaticism once in a PBEM. I know it just had to be fanaticism because of what I saw in the orders screen in between turns. Situation: German troops (me) are a counter attacking a hill held by American engineers. My SMG squads are taking heavy casualites and cannot fight for a closer position to bring more firepower onto the enemy. At the end of the turn, my HQ for the SMG squad (who was in full defilade from the enemy) breaks from his cover and begins to rush the enemy on the hill. Turn ends. Now I'm thinking, I didn't plot any moves for my men on the previous turn. Why is my HQ unit buggering towards danger? Click on HQ unit, he is in a run order towards the Americans. I then take the plotted way points in the orders phase and reverse them back to his cover for the next turn. Start of new turn. The HQ unit, again, ignores my orders and rushes at the Americans on the hill. I zoomed in on the HQ unit during this action. Basically, he ran to within 25 meters of the enemy, tossed a grendade, then retreated to a small patch of trees near the road of the hill without taking a casualty in the process. Amazing to behold. Of course, the American Zippo team "cured" him of any more fanaticism for the next 4 turns. hehe ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. IN HOC SIGNO VINCES
  4. I created a scenario loosely based on the Ouistreham scene from the movie, "The Longest Day." This is the one where No. 4 Commando is tasked with taking the casino on D Day. Please download it and give it a whirl. This one will put your infantry tactics to the test. Of course, you'll have elite soldiers to do it with also. But don't expect it to be a piece of cake. Send me your feedback once you play it. Best played as Allies when playing solo. Use the default positions for the computer first, then try it with the computer choosing the setup. Lastly, I really believe that this one would be good for a PBEM scenario. If you try it as a blind PBEM, let me know how you like it. If you just can't wait for the depot to approve the sceario for downloading, I could be persuaded to send one via email if you send me a note. ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. 5. If I am understanding what you are saying correctly, then I am disturbed by it as well. Let me see if I get this correct: The enemy retreated out of LOS at approximately 250 meters leaving the generic symbols as a point of reference as to where the last known positions were. Now, a little bit later, you take the LOS tool from your FO to the same spot 250 meters away and point it at the generic symbol and it shows 350 meters now? If what I am describing is correct, that would be a major advantage with information. Yikes! ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. IN HOC SIGNO VINCES
  6. Well, I've rewritten the map for the scenario and have been play testing it using some example OOB's for the Axis. I've tried a few different ones. It can be a very difficult scenario for the human attacker. So far, I've discovered that the German AI defender is somewhat too cautious on utilizing its assets. I've mimicked the map that Pvt. Pike provided and it looks really good in my opinion. However, because of that, I don't have a river in front of the casino, but, rather have a nice anti-tank ditch instead. I want to tweak some of the elevations on the map until I am satisfied and I think that I am going to change the Axis OOB to somewhat reflect what is in the movie a little more as well. I will keep everyone posted on my progress. Stoffel, Pvt. Pike, Wayne, PatWilson and other contributors to this thread may have a beta copy of the scenario within the next 24 hours upon request to play test it if anyone is interested. Just drop me an email. Thanks fellas! ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. 7. Wow! You guys! I ask for gold and in return I get diamonds and jewels! What a great resource this has turned out to be. Private Pike, what an incredible map. Thanks for posting that link with all of your information. Pat Wilson, thanks for your input on unit OOB. The movie showed a 20 mm flak and I put that into OOB. (Of course, the movie is most likely not accurate.) I am going to rework the map with all of this detail in mind. I'm going to try to blend the best of the resources here and from reading other people's suggested sources to try and make a decent Ouisterham scenario. Back to the drawing board for me but I don't mind! Thanks to everyone that provided input. Cheers! ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. 8. Wow, Wayne! Thanks a bunch! That was quick. I'll get to editing. I'd like to get an idea on what the gun was that the German troops had in the bunker and the model of tank that the French commandos had to help turn the tide and take the hotel. If anyone else has any ideas please don't hold back. Thanks. ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. IN HOC SIGNO VINCES
  9. I decided to create a scenario based on a scene from the movie the Longest Day. I've got the ground work done and the map. It's the scene where the allies have to take the Ouistam Hotel? (sp?) First off, since my wife will kill me if I run to the video store and rent this movie for tonight. (She puts up with my WW2 fetish but she doesn't want to be involved in it. hehe) Therefore, I've been doing the unit OOB for both sides from memory. Please help me to spell Ouistem correctly. Also, I can't remember if the Allied elite task force was French or British. The scene in the movie is the one where they have to cross a bridge and take the hotel from a heavily dug in prepared Axis defense. The end of the scene is the one where the commander says, "We need armor support." And he runs off back across the bridge to get it. During the scene, some nuns head down the high road to tend to the wounded soldiers in the midst of hostile cross fire. I realize that I am going to improvise a bit but I definitely want to get the nationalities correct as well as the model of tank that the allies get in support. I promise that the scenario will be a tough one for both sides. I've been play testing it from the allied side and so far it is very good. Now I need to tweak it to make it as correct as possible. Currently I am using British Airborne and Heer troops. Any information and help with the OOB's for both sides would be fantastic. Thanks much in advance. ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. IN HOC SIGNO VINCES
  10. There was a sharpshooter for the Germans in the beta demo scenario: Riesberg. However, that scenario was not included on the Gold Demo. So, if you have the gold demo, you won't have a sharpshooter until you get the full version. ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. IN HOC SIGNO VINCES

  12. The only time I've experienced something that is similar to what you're describing is when I order a FO to target an area that he really doesn't have LOS. You can target your fires there but the count down for the barrage moves at a 2 to 1 pace. Is this happening to you? Other than that, my FO timer works pretty good unless I am targeting an area that is out of LOS. ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. IN HOC SIGNO VINCES
  13. I am beginning to think that the use (or lack, rather) of dynamic flags might be the most overlooked feature that has been provided for us by BTS. I only wish that we were allowed to have dynamic flags thrown in for the QB generator. As it stands, we are at the mercy of scenario designers to include the dynamic flag option. (Very few scenarios use them.) IMHO, having dynamic flags in an attack or assault QB could very well add some spice to an already fantastic game. What do you all think? If you've played a scenario with dynamic flags, what was your impression? If anyone has played a double blind scenario, PBEM, with dynamic flags, I'd be very curious as to how the momentum of battle changed for the defender once the objective of the attacker materialized? ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. 15. Just go to http://www.gamesofwar.de Moon's sight has great strategy with a style of writing that everyone can understand. Go to the tactics section. Also, run a search on the name LOS. That guys writes good stuff on strategy. He's got a couple of articles over at CMHQ as well. Lastly, AAR's are the only way to really understand good and bad tactics. Read every one that you can. Fionn's stuff is very good and when watching his movies they speak volumes. All of these sources are quite better than the average drivel that Prima puts out for $15 a book. 16. I am guilty of pushing a bad situation as well in many of my games. I just wrote an AAR for Heinz's new website for AAR's. I think it will get published in the near future. I suffered consquences as a result. But I also learned quite a bit as well. (They're only pixels, right?) ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. 17. I have been praising the game to my fellow co-workers that like to play PC strategy games for about 6 months now. (When the Beta Demo was all that we had.) I sold one fellow on the Beta Demo alone. But the kicker is this other guy that I work with: He likes the mainstream strategy games and I've been pulling his ear for 3 months to download the gold demo to try it out. He puts a lot of stock in PC Gamer reviews and was relunctant to even look at CM. Well, the review came out and he was impressed with what he saw. I asked him if he was going to go download the demo and he said, "no." I asked him why not and he said, "I am going to buy it. Can they deliver by this weekend?" hehehehehe Well, sometimes it takes a little mainstream publicity to sell games. Word of mouth can only go so far. It was great to see PC Gamer review the game. It will only sell more copies. ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. IN HOC SIGNO VINCES
  18. If you make a Meeting Engagement QB. (1000) Both sides = the same number of points. If you make an Attack QB. (1000) Defender = 1000 points Attacker = 1500-1700 points If you make an Assault QB. (1000) Defender = 1000 points Attacker = 2000-2200 points I have no idea what the disposition of points are for a probe though. When you set the parameter for number of points. You are setting the bar for the how many points the defender gets. The scenario type then takes that figure and roughly give the attacker 1.5 times the points for an attack and roughly 2 times the points for an assault. (You won't be able to setup a 1500 point game until 1.3 version patch comes out.) Hope that answers your questions. ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. 19. Is the scenario on the disk or did you download a homemade one from the net. What's the name of it?
  20. Ha! I taunt you again! Stefan, I see that you are out here on the board wasting time while you should be whipping up the next turn in the American rout of the Germans in "Move It or Lose It." The Americans will not stand for such stall tactics! P.S. Where's my files??? hehe ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. IN HOC SIGNO VINCES

  22. Heinz, You beat me to the punch! I enjoy reading AAR's that are published to the net. Not only are people creative but it also opens a window of learning. I shall support your site with content. I like the layout and the targetting site is a nice touch! It loads quickly on a slow connection too! One thing that isn't quite working yet (might be on my end) is that the thumbnail pictures don't load. What I mean is: a new window pops up, the loading bar progresses, but when it is finished, there is no picture there. I've tried all of them on your sample AAR. Same result. I'll email you with some details on my current AAR. ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. IN HOC SIGNO VINCES
  23. Your HQ unit just might be of veteran status. The higher you go in troop quality the less there is a delay before the order is carried out. If your veteran HQ is leading regulars, greens, or conscripts, your HQ will leave the other guys in the dust. To help coordinate this type of situation, issue a pause command to your HQ unit before the action starts. That will add a 15 second delay to his following the ordered route. As for the other thing that you mention, you'll have to plot each squad individually to arrive exactly where you want them to go. (Out of formation.) Though, I don't think that is too wise. Bunching men up in the same spot tends to catch the eye of a leary enemy artillery observer. And then the rains of hell come crashing down! In short, bunching guys really tight together makes them vulnerable to one well placed 155mm shell and then, whamo!, no more rifle platoon. Just a tip. Cheers! ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. IN HOC SIGNO VINCES
  24. I'm really enjoying this thread. I have recently begun to wonder about somewhat historically accurate OOB's myself. Lots of good discussion here. If anyone has anything more to add, please do so. ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. IN HOC SIGNO VINCES
