  1. That is truly desperate. Ah, but there is very fine line between desperation and geniuis, no? The point is, it must have worked. hehe Your "uselss civilian" (citizen?) might not like hearing his commander grumbling about his idiotic (or is it intuitive?) use of ammunition for a pointless (ingenuis?) cause. Especially, when he was ordered to do so. Give the man a bronze star or something commander! (Lest ye be court marshalled.) In any event and back to the topic at hand, I somewhat agree with you on your amount of area fire/ammunition expense crusade only because it sucks but not because I think it is not realistic. It's the price that we have to pay to run the show and make the tough decisions that we have to do as Generals (Or is it captains?). Could you imagine what that guy was thinking, had it been real? "What was that captain? Say again? REALLY?? OH-BAH_KAY_BEE! You're the boss-man!" And then he let's it rip. After 15 seconds of area fire, you yell, "Cease fire, cease fire!" to no avail. All the while the grunt is thinking, "I'll show this lunatic some f***ing area fire!" SWOOOSH! SWOOOSH! SWOOOSH! SWOOSH! "What's that you say, Captain? Uh, I can't hear you! I'm busy area firing this pavement!" SWOOOSH! SWOOOSH! SWOOOSH! "Maybe they'll send this lunatic to Bastogne for this! Area fire my a**!" SWOOOSH! "They're ya go boss-man! Toasted concrete! Mind if I do my Citizen Kane impression now?" hehehehe All in good fun, my friend! Yes it sucks, I agree, but such is the way the game is designed and I rather like it in a masochistic way. Next time you order area fire just picture in your mind the above scene, bite your upper lip, and say to yourself, "I'm a freakin' genius!" (Or lunatic?) 2. I've not had any problems with that type of strategy. The only thing that I can think of is if you HQ only has LOS to a very small opening to where you wanted your indirect fire, then the lines wouldn't stick. (You have to find the exact location where the HQ has true LOS and point the targeting line from the mortars to that spot. It's tricky but it works.) One other thing is this: The mortar teams targeting line will never turn green when you are setting the target. (They have no LOS.) However, if you set the target and if the HQ is in line of site, your targeting line turns yellow and it "sticks." ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. 3. Does a platoon hq with a bonus for stealth help with prevention of being spotted in all formation movements? (Run, Move, etc.) Or is that when the units are sneaking and crawling only? TIA ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. IN HOC SIGNO VINCES
  4. Stefan, Why not go ahead and practice your retreating while under fire in OUR scenario. LOL Just joshin' ya pal. It is a blood bath though, isn't it? ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. IN HOC SIGNO VINCES

  6. How big is the battle that you are fighting? More units = longer PBEM files.

  9. If the above doesn't work, make sure that you don't have any assault boats for the side that you want to simulate with the computer in the operation. It is an AI limitation that is here to stay. However, the above post sounds like the most likely suspect to this mystery. ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. IN HOC SIGNO VINCES
  10. I've noticed it as well. I've also read "Closing with the Enemy" on the Allies using that tactic. I don't think that the pathfinding of the AI will allow such movement. Kind of like sending your guys to the slaughter by going from building to building. Ambushes, mg grazing fire, oh my! Don't shoot a bazooka to try and breach the wall of the next building. You might set the building you are in on fire with the back blast. How do I know? Let's just call it "field experience." ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. IN HOC SIGNO VINCES
  11. I love driving my Chevy Caprice down the highway and looking out over the rolling hills and thinking, "I could pound my way through that brush with my rhino, zip through the farmfield, and be in a hull down position facing that tree line in 45 seconds." I went to southeast Ohio 4th of July and all I kept thinking about was that this was not ideal tank terrain. My wife thinks I am nuts. She's right. ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. IN HOC SIGNO VINCES [This message has been edited by kb9sog (edited 07-13-2000).]
  12. I found it after following USENET wargames newsgoup. The thread that caught my eye was from Fionn. I think the subject was something to the extent that: Combat Mission models armor penetration for 30 and 60 degree off angle shots. I was like bull***t. What kind of company spends that much attention to detail on a wargame nowadays? I mean, after all, German armor, no matter what angle is invincible to attacks except from the rear. LOL. (At least that is what I had really thought from playing countless hours of CC1.) I clicked the link, downloaded the beta demo, and have never, ever looked back. What an education to warfare this game has been for me. ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. IN HOC SIGNO VINCES
  13. Spread the word high and far. Vacation days have been spent to aid the call to battle! A warning: Cancel your order now or abandon all hope of having a normal social life again. Seriously, welcome aboard and enjoy an instant classic. ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. IN HOC SIGNO VINCES
  14. It really depends on what type of tank that you are using. Some tanks (tank destroyers for example, such as the US M10 Hellcat) have a machine gun on top of the turret for the tank commander to use. However, if the tank is buttoned up, your vehicle will not be able to fire its machine gun because the gun is external. The sherman on the other hand can fire machine guns from inside the tank(buttoned up) (coax machine gun) without a problem. Unbutton your tank commander and see if you can spray machine gun fire. Just remember this... If your tank destroyer is anywhere close to enemy small arms fire..within 250 meters...the tank commander will overide your decision to use machine guns out of fear of being killed in action. (As Martha Stewert says, "This is a good thing.") ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. 16. Still open for opponents. If the requirements are a problem, we can negotiate those as well. It will be firecracker time soon but I'll be online late tonight. (CST) ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. IN HOC SIGNO VINCES
  17. I can handle up to 3 games going at once. I am off of work until Friday night. (Then I work all weekend long.) I can turn over a bunch of turns today (the 4th) and tomorrow. Perhaps finishing today or tomorrow. I'd like to play for the CMHQ ladder if possible. Here are the requirements: 1. Full fog of war. 2. Quick battles- medium map size- no more than 25 turns. 3. 600 points max. 4. Version 1.01 Here is what is negotiable: 1. Allies or Axis and either Attacking or Defending. You can either choose the side or the role. I get to choose whatever you don't choose first. 2. Ideally, I'd like to have the computer pick the force to keep it real and to simulate fighting a battle based on what HQ determines are the available assets. Let lady luck determine your force pool. My history: Been a long time lurker and player of the demo and now the game. I consider myself a par player. I've played PBEM on the demo with a friend from work and am familiar with how to do it. My ladder name is the same as you see here and I have no battles to my credit on the ladder because I just signed up yesterday. Send an email to kb9sog@earthlink.net if you are interested and we can negotiate a battle. Cheers and happy 4th of July. ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. IN HOC SIGNO VINCES
  18. Would like to post my new scenario to willing host. It is fictional and is my first effort at scenario creation. It is set in the French bocage. It is bloody but fun. I had a good time watching the AI run its strategy. Smart HAL 9000 at times! Drop me a note at kb9sog@earthlink.net if you are interested in hosting. I apologize in advance if there are any historical inaccuracies in it. Constructive criticism welcomed. ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. 19. Ayinger Ur Weiss That is a very tasty but heavy brew. Celebrator Doppel Bach (sp?) Very rich and dark. Haufbrau Enjoyable Chimay (brewed by Trappist Monks?) Wonderful However these imports cost to much in America to enjoy on a regular basis. If it is domestic, Killian's Red. When it is micro brew, Mishawaka Brewery's Four Horsemen's Ale. ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. IN HOC SIGNO VINCES
  20. Hasn't anyone who has CM now been playing around with Air Support? P-47's, flak batteries, etc.? Let's hear some comments troopers! 22. One word: Multitask TCP/IP is a great idea. Especially if you can save the game mid-battle and return to it. While your opponent makes his 5-7 minute plot for his/her turn, do something productive. 1. Clean your computer desk. 2. Organize your CD's. 3. Minimize the game and open up Word and work on projects for your job. 4. Make a snack. 5. Drink a beer. 6. Play a game of solitaire. 7. Download dirty pictures. (If that's your thing.) 8. Study for your license to enter the world of Amateur Radio. (Hint, Hint, see sig below.) The list is endless. TCP/IP is going to be a great feature to have to play a casual round of battle with your buds for fun and bragging rights. 5-7 minutes is realistic to plot a turn. Save the PBEM stuff for CMMC and/or ladder play. Then give it your all. 2-5 TCP/IP matches while multitasking to study for your FCC exam to become a licensed ham and you'll pass with flying colours. Then go buy yourself a modest ham radio with a simple antenna hook up and talk to radio free Europe while waiting for your next turn from your opponent. I'm such a lurker....still a junior member and have read this board every day since November. hehe Cheers! And here's to hoping that CM will be in the mail slot today! ------------------ BJ Simpson Visit www.arrl.org for information about Ham Radio. IN HOC SIGNO VINCES
  23. Been here since before the beta demo release. (Not as long as some have been waiting.) I lost my "member" status after the Y2K glitch. I read the forum every day and visit the Combat Mission club on Yahoo once in a while as well. I believe in keeping the signal to noise ratio as low as possible if I haven't much to say. I'm thinking of buying an extra copy of the game as gift for a relative. But I do agree with you that the word must be getting around. Just don't underestimate the number of lurkers like myself that have just started to post here. "I lurk, therefore, I am." 24. We should analyze the distribution of all of the listed ages, find the mean, establish control limits, and then re-center the process if necessary. y=x(f) Bell curves, histograms, and a complete pareto analysis. It's amazing how 12-14 hour shifts, working for an OEM supplier to the auto industry, can otherwise infiltrate the mind of an otherwise healthy, sane, lad of 29 (As soon as May 25 arrives.) years of age. My BA in theological studies is bigger than yours in history! Nanny, nanny, boo-boo! "I lurk, therefore, I am." BJ Simpson--the silent sychophant. P.S. Somebody laugh at this post. It was a tough weekend. P.P.S. CM will be released on my birthday because the BTS guys wanted to give me the best present anyone could ever have. P.P.P.S.
