1. Huh?? BH, I'm looking right at American Airborne units on a May 45 purchase screen. And the reverse of what Freyland mentioned is also true - you can have units only available in, say, June or July of 44 in a scenario set in April of 45. Jason
2. If you take Fionn's advice, don't expect your scouts to live long at all. Scouts are more fragile than an entire squad is, and at 100m ahead of the platoon it is likely out of command radius. I note that Fionn made no illusion that your scouts would survive. If possible, try to have your scout move laterally across the likely disposition of the enemy and towards cover - If it comes under fire it might actually live. Also try and have your tanks with good LOS to possible enemy positions so they can be brought quickly under fire when the enemy shows. Shermans are fabulous in this role as they have lots of good HE and MGs handy. To combat a scout patrol, I'd likely fire at it with the 20mm gun, or an onboard mortar or MG. Mortars can be quite tough to spot and an MG in a flank defense position is unlikely to give away your main defense position. Jason
3. I played a 300pt QB against the AI yesterday and won because the AI didn't purchase any forces for itself! Jason
4. in a PBEM game against Berli, my British platton was advancing in the open and came under fire. They rushed towards the nearest cover - one empty foxhole. 30+ men all trying to huddle in one foxhole. I moved them away next turn and they ran right back. SIGH! Jason
5. In Keegan's book on WWII he makes a point in one chapter that, not only did the US have more people, but its economy was vastly more productive than Germany and especially Japan. I just finished reading 'Achtung - Panzer!' written in 1937 by Guderain. He has a chapter at the end entitled 'Warfare at the Present Day'. One section is about supplying adequate transport for all the mechanized forces that will accompany the panzer forces. He has a table where he lists production of motor vehicles by country: 1936 US........77.2% Britain...7.8% Germany...4.8% France....3.5% Canada....3.4% Italy.....0.9% Others....2.4% Is it any wonder that Germany wasn't able to adequately mechanize its army? It is also rather apparent why the Axis was hesitant to involve the US in the war with a productive capacity that dwarfed the rest of the world. Notice that Russia doesn't even appear on this chart, which is probably why they needed so many of their transportation vehicles from the US. Jason
6. I picked up the aforementioned Encyclopedia last September. The book is definitely worth the $25 I spent on it. The 'Encyclopedia' is attractively laid out and has nice color pictures as well as photographs. The book gives a great overview of most of the various weapon systems of WWII - from handgrenades to battleships. The book is worth it for the illustrations alone! I picked a book up about 12 years ago by the same folks entitled 'Combat Guns' in the same format and I was quite impressed by it. Jason
7. HEY! It's Mr. Tom Punkrawk! Good to see you are still around. I've been wondering what has happened to some of the old posters. I figured you hadn't been around because you still didn't have a fast enough computer. Hope you can get a 3d card soon! Jason
8. If the 37mm gun is so ineffective against infantry, why even HAVE HE rounds? If the Stuart was buttoned, it couldn't use its .50 cal MG. What else are the other crewmen supposed to do if they aren't going to fire the main gun? Bad HE is still better than NO HE. Jason
9. I had seven German halftracks run into an ambush of four bazookas, but I was most impressed with the .50cal that was providing anti-infantry support rack up three SPW250 kills at <75m range. The .50 cal is a weapon to be feared because the Allies put the damned thing on just about every vehicle. Jason
10. I wanted to lay a quickie scenario after a weekend of camping so I played a 300pt QB vs the AI. I won in one turn ... because the AI didn't buy itself any forces. The next game it only bought one platoon. So the NEXT game I purchased the AI's forces and was able to spend all 300pts and get a better fight. When I buy, I try to take a historical approach and pick a TO&E that I can justify. e.g - buying a platoon of Shermans and taking four M4/75s and one M4/76. I've even given myself green troops and limited myself solely to infantry to try something fun. And you can SURE buy a lot of green infantry! Jason
11. I was at a talk given by the guy who does the sound for the Star Wars movies and the places and ways he gets sounds are incredibly varied. Pretty much only limited by his imagination because money sure isn't a problem with millions of dollars of toys to play with at Lucasfilm. Jason
12. If you play PBEM, exchange passwords at the end of the game. (and save all of your turns) I did that with a few of my beta demo PBEMs and it was a real eye opener. Jason
13. The MG34 was a second-line weapon and standardizing TO&E makes things MUCH MUCH easier. Jason
14.
quote:
Originally posted by Los: There is a limit to the amount of units you can have, I hit that limit in the Carentan operation, it's a couple of regiments. Tops. Los

{back on topic} Los, don't you mean a couple of battalions? I tried clicking on three battalions to get a full regiment and I only got a bit of the third battalion. Jason
15. My friend is in the Navy and her husband is a newly commisioned Ensign. While their pay may not be high, they each get $500 per month for housing and $300 per month for food, tax free. That $9600 dollars tax free is equivalent to about $15,000 per year before taxes. So each of them makes in the mid-$30,000s per year. I'd also like to mention that all this Clnton bashing about military budget cuts is misplaced. A large reason we have a balanced budget is the spending caps put in over 10 years ago - before Clinton was President. ANY president would have had to deal with these spending caps. 16. Yes, many people have requested an OOB screen like in SP. The SOON TO BE RELEASED FAQ has about a dozen of the most common questions, including this one. While CM doesn't have a OOB screen, the various hotkeys should make spotting units that need attention easy. toggling smoke, trees, and bases; resizing units, toggling unit 'morale state', etc should make finding your men fairly easy. A unit database with description, game stats, and picture (whether an actual or game picture) is probably left to the fans to do. I am currently working on a unit database, but I need to change all the point cost s for armored vehicles after the 1.03 changes. Yes, leaders automatically attempt to rally units under their command. From my experience, having units in C&C is a BIG plus, especially low quality units. Editing names - ahem, RTFM, page 130. Jason
17. This feature isn't just something that was on 'The List' for future additions. The movie feature, along with TCP/IP, was originally planned for the 1.0 release. I can only conclude that the coding time for movies was, like TCP/IP, higher than initially planned. Unlike TCP/IP, though, movies are not a promised feature. So I don't know if/when we will ever see this feature. Jason
18. Yeah, I finish the chart and then 1.03 comes out and changes point costs on me. ARRGGHH!! Jason
19. I use the mortars to harass an enemy unit while other units maneuver. Or to target guns. I took out an AA gun in a PBEM game that was bothering my units with some concerted fire from the 2in mortars. And you can always use it against enemy basket catchers, err, enemy halftracks. Jason
20. Username, I have read almost every single post on this board. The only ones I have missed were around the release of the gold demo when this board was flooded with almost 1,000 posts a day for a week. If you arrived on this board early enough, it was fairly easy to read all of the previous posts and keep up with the new ones. When I started reading the board there were only about 3-4000 posts and we were only getting about 75 new posts a day. Jason
21.
quote:
Originally posted by dumbo: I beleive the split is 20 billion a year in aid to Eqypt and 25 billion to Israel if I recall correctly. cheers _dumbo

At first glance I thought these numbers were WAY too high. So I went and looked up the US budget online. THe ENTIRE international affairs section of the budget totalled 15,243 million dollars. I don't know where you got your numbers from, but I don't think they are correct. Also listed were 9,226 million dollars in loan guarantees to Israel with NO new loans for 1999 and none projected for 2000 or 2001. Either you have mis-remembered or somebody was feeding you a line of propoganda. Aha, even more info from the US government (I LOVE having governemnt documents online): $2.3 billion in economic aid and $3.5 billion in military aid to the Middle East. So your numbers are inflated by a factor of 10. Jason I shall make ALL search engines bow to my will. [This message has been edited by guachi (edited 07-28-2000).]
22. The problem with buying an infantry battalion and deleting everything but a platoon to make it cheaper is that you will still be left with the battalion HQ and at least one Company HQ. The point cost reductions are 5% at platoon level, 10% at company level, and 15% at battaloni level. This isn't EXACTLY how point costs are calculated, but ask for my COMPLETE point cost chart, and I'll send it to you and you can see for yourself. Jason
23. Jeff Heidman and I both made up tables for the infantry units, and I suppose it is a race to see which one of us gets tables done for the other units. The infantry tables were relatively easy to do and took maybe five or six hours to get everything looking nice. An AFV database will take a bit longer because there are more AFVs with more information. I have already completed a unit point cost chart for every unit as well as an availability chart and those took a REALLY LONG time to make. Jason
24. i've read the ASL manual and the rules additions with the first five modules half a dozen times straight through, AND I'VE NEVER PLAYED ASL. I own the modules, punched out the counters, but never played. I hear you Los, loud and clear. Jason
