  1. He's going to be awfully easy to spot in that Weasel! The authorities will stake out all the Weasel-parts stores, too.
  2. I'd dearly love to see a Dinosaur vs Army Men version of CM. Combat Mission: Beyond Time, perhaps . Those were always my favorite comic books. Ahhh...memories.
  3. Dschugaschwili is correct. There is the 'padlock' command during setup that will keep us from....er..um...fudging.
  4. Well, the subject is closed for me. Unless a member of the CM team cares to respond (and they shouldn't bother if they only intend to try to convince me that what I have personally observed is realistic), I won't be posting here again. I just can't see the fun in having my games continually decided for me by one questionable feature. :^(
  5. Hmmm...well, if a highly questionable (IMO, from a rarity standpoint) feature forces me to use unrealistic and gamey tactics, then I believe the feature is the problem and not my setup. I was kind of hoping for a more official response. (hint, hint)
  6. Hehe. The AI does seem awfully fond of 20mm Flak.
  7. LOL, Charles. Yours is probably the most perfect reply I have ever seen.
  8. Remember that the map scrolls 2+ squares at a time. It looks like it is scrolling less on a blank map because there are no visual references. Put a woods tile at the far edges and try scrolling again. You should be able to see what I mean.
  9. My Prophet 3D GeForce card produces the same effect, except it's gray instead of white. I don't use transparent buildings, so it's not a problem for me. I, also, assume it is just normal behavior. It would be nice to know for sure, though. I hate mysteries.
  10. Is anybody else finding it almost impossible to mount a defense in buildings because of AT weapon backblast. A good 50% of my games end up with self-inflicted building fires ruining my defense. I can't believe for a second that the chances of a panzerfaust immediately setting fire to an entire 3-4 story building could be so high (or even possible at all). This is quickly ruining my enjoyment of a large portion of the game. Surely the chances are so small that removing (or at least drastically reducing) this feature would have no impact on realism. IMO, this 'feature' should be seriously rethought. If the occurrence was very, VERY rare, I could accept it as a vagary of war. But should so many of my games be decided by one questionable feature? I can also see this as being a major problem with CM2, since the emphasis on urban warfare will be so much heavier. So far, this is the only major complaint I have about this revolutionary game. And if it wasn't impacting my enjoyment so severely, believe me, I wouldn't say anything at all. I'm one of those sycophant, rally around BTS at all costs kind of persons (well, most of the time).
  11. So, newbies are to be seen as pirates until proven innocent?! What has this board come down to! Each day I see the 'established' members becoming more and more short with people who may not only be new to this game, but to forums in general. Many questions that could be answered very quickly are, instead met with a semi-rant about 'searching' that is five times longer than a simple answer would have been. Sadly, I've seen many forums devolve into nothing but cults centered around a few prominent members that are considered too sacrosanct to question, with newbies being harassed so much that they, rightfully, think 'Screw this, I'll look for another game, mod, etc. to enjoy'. I'm not saying that this forum is anywhere close to that bad, of course. But everyone should do their dead level best to remember that they were newbies at one time and then treat others accordingly. If anybody has been involved with the ActionQuake2 or Counter-Strike forums, you'll know why I am so concerned. And you wouldn't want to be compared with the 'twitch' type, would you? Hey! Smilie hired bodyguards!
  12. Oh pipe down, Maximus. You are getting soooooo predictable. It just so happens that, if I hadn't already discovered it for myself, I would have been very interested (and not here right now ). I play SPWW2 for the variety. I play CM for the immersion. Perhaps it's just that I have the mental capacity to enjoy more than one game at a time. BTW, if you want to make Steve and Charles cry sometime, ask them if they could add all the units from SPWW2 to CM! Time for a terabyte drive.
  13. I have the same problem with a full install. The hard drive is being accessed momentarily about every five seconds. I prefer playing without ambient sounds, so it's no big deal to me.
  14. Are there specific voice .wavs for cases of friendly fire? I keep envisioning the friendly fire scene in Kelly's Heroes and the subsequent comments by the men.
  15. The turn limit for quick battles is 40. Will this be raised, considering the new point limit? This isn't terribly important, of course, considering how easy it is to raise the limit in the editor. [This message has been edited by hnh3_cm (edited 06-28-2000).]
  16. Hehe. I'm trying to imagine a buttoned up jeep! 'Get under the dash, Corporal!' 'But, Sir, I won't fit!' 'That's an order, Corporal.' 'OK, Sir. But my feet are gonna stick out the bottom!' Hehe.
  17. This was the 12th Panzerclownische Division, hastily thrown together in desperation at Arhnem. Highly effective at blocking bridges and causing incapacitation of the enemy by means of fits of laughter. They were a product of the psychological warfare branch. Really!
  18. Haven't really seen any glaring LOS problems myself. I have noticed that buildings seem to be a little bit 'off' compared to the demos. By this I mean that when placing units inside buildings, sometimes the open ground seems to reach 'inside' a building on one side, like the bulding is off center somehow. If this is the case, then that could have an effect on LOS as well. I've played nothing but Quick Battles so far, so this problem (if there is one) could be related to the map creator. The corners of buildings have always seemed, to me, rather suspect LOS-wise. As for the smoke, I don't depend on that unless I can totally saturate an area. Smoke has always been an obscurant, not some kind of cloaking device. Weather conditions cause all kinds of little openings in smoke screens (something not possible to represent on screen, given current graphics standards), especially those created by a bunch of randomly scattered shells. Smoke created by smoke generators is much more effective, of course. I've seen nothing in my own games that I would consider outside the realm of possibility considering weather related vagaries.
  19. Awww, shucks! I thought this was a Monty Python thread... Sorry. I'm leaving now.
  20. I am using a Sound Blaster AudioPCI 64V with latest SB drivers. I have a P2 350 with 64MB of RAM and a Prophet 3D GeForce video card. I don't get an error log because, I assume, I have to restart my computer with CTL-ALT-DEL. The error message indicates, though, that it is a DirectSound problem. I am using DirectX 7a. Hope this helps.
  21. Just confirming the problem with MDMP. It worked fine in quick battles without arty, but as soon as I tried one with airstrikes I got the blue screen of death. I reinstalled the old sounds and the problem ceased. Madmatt's sounds must be too rich for my machine.
