  2. I have to say I am not particularly fond of the current quick game PBEM format. Probably because I am or at least think I am inadequate at it. A fair option would be the following: Player A: Chooses map, objective, conditions, etc Player B: determines force type, engagement, attacker/defender and Points allocated for each side. Player A: chooses a side or rejects. If accepted then a & B buy their units and start; else B step repeated; While this gets rid of some of the fog-of-war, both sides will know the map and a rought idea of what they are facing. Right now this can be done on the honor system, but I would like to see it "hard-wired" where one would not have to absolutely trust the bastard you are trying to kill. Any one else interested in seeing this implemented? pford [This message has been edited by pford (edited 10-12-2000).]
  3. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Buckeye: A lot of Mac users experience intermittent lock-ups with CM, especially using OS 9. Turning off the backside cache seems to make this occur less often, although it's not clear why. (There is a free extension/control panel that can be used to do this, but I can't recall the name, and I'm not at home to check.) I have also found that periodically saving the file makes the lockups less likely. If the program locks up while you are entering moves for a PBEM, the autosave doesn't help. It reverts to the most recent file, and you have to re-enter the moves. But if you saved the file, you can re-open the saved file and go from there. If you received a movie file, it doesn't matter, because you can replay the movie. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> It is the G3/G4 profiler from PowerLogix www.powerlogix.com I went for months without a hang, then I tried installing a new PCI card and it came back. Maybe resetting the PRAM might help, but it will screw-up your setting if you do it manually, e.g. alt-opt-p-r at bootup. Your will then have to go into your control panel and reset the network, the startup disk, etc. Techtool will make a backup and reset the PRAM. Also create a minimal set of extension under extension manager that runs CM. It is a pain to reboot in and out of different extensions sets but it beats hanging. One last thought. If Steve or somebody will tell us(me) what we need to do with Macsbug, then maybe we can give him a clue as to why this is happening. Regards pford
  4. Since Macs have been dragged into the conversation I will throw in my $0.02 US. If BTS plans to continue MacOS support, they will at some point in time need to convert to a native MacOS X or beyond. MacOS X runs on a BSD kernal, Mach 3. I may be wrong, but I don't believe that it would be a great leap to go from MacOS X OpenGL to Linux OpenGL since they are both varients of Unix. So I would speculate that when CM is moved to MacOS X and OpenGL that Linux will not be far behind, or for those who want to believe it, vis versa.
  5. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Jeff Heidman: ... If you think it is untrue (and it may very well be), then it behooves you to say so, and refute it ..... Jeff Heidman <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Obligating someone to disprove a statement is a fallicy. I can be skeptical about a so called fact, especially when it is presented without any supporting references. If anything,it behooves the person making the statement to prove its voracity, not vise versa. For example, I know for a fact that there is intellegent life on Titan. Now please prove me wrong. 6. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by PawBroon: If we are to be touchy about historical accuracy I might as well chirp in. Being french I'm borderline offended by the last one. I know for a fact some french fought willingly with the SS on the eastern front. But most of those we fought there were called the "Malgré nous" which stand for "In spite of us". Those guys were from Alsace-Lorraine which Hitler considered as part of Germany and were drafted and sent there. I doubt it that more french died fighting for the Nazis rather than against it. If you're from a country which surrendered as soon as cheese was lacking, why would you die for some other moron? Beware of some comments. In any case, if I am wrong, which wouldn't surprise me that much since french history books wouldn't advertise the actual figures if they are true, then I am sorry too over react. If not then that last point was a lil' under the belt. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> If I were French, I would be offended too. I think that this quote is playing with statistics such as who is French and who died fighting. If one looks at regular military, than the French losses were light because the loss was so fast. Not that the per battle casulities were light. Now if even a small porportion fought for Germany, their overall losses may be very heavy because of the longer duration. I suspect this "fact" ignores the resistance and all those civilian deaths that occured during the occupation. I would also not be surprised if it ignored the Free French and counted Vichey <sp?> French losses.
  7. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Schrullenhaft: And you have no problems with the icon on the desktop ? I wonder if GoMac is looking for a resource that isn't in the CM executable - possibly a smaller icon resource ? Can GoMac reference a different resource than the actual executable for its icon-buttons ? If so then you could probably tinker with ResEdit, extract the icon resource and shrink it down to a size that GoMac could use/reference. This must be proof that I'm doin' absolutely nothing at work...<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Well, I thought you were right since I was thinking the same thing. Using ResEdit, there are icon resources not present and in the ones present, the tiny icons in them are missing. I bet GoMac is using the tiny ones. Checking several of the other applictions show that the tiny ones are the ones being displayed. I just don't have time to draw them. My lack of artistic abilities have nothing to do with it. 8. Also try deleting the preference file and increasing the resolution. If that doesn't work try decreasing the resolution. Set col or to millions, then try thousands. There is a usual set of voodoo, not the graphic card, that I perform when having problems with a Mac. Deleting the Pref file. If there are important setings like with Conflict Catcher, it can screw things up, so you may just want to copy it to an empty folder. Do this only when the application is not running. Rebuilding the desktop. Who knows why this would work? Running a disk repair utility. Disk First Aid, Disk Warrior, etc. Turning off unneed extensions. On an original iMac I have, I have a CM set in the extension manager because the defalut has something in it that kills it. (Don't ask me what is left other than ATI, I don't recall)
  9. OK, after my posting non-bug bugs several times, I have a real one. It is kind of weak and unimportant and affect the game playing not one iota. I use GoMac which adds a Windows-like activity bar at the bottom of the screen. It allows quick launching of applications. Tiny icons of those programs that are frequenly used are displayed. To add an application, one just drags it to the bar. All the applications I have added shows their tiny icon, accept Combat Mission which is blank.
  10. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by patboivin: I know it's been discussed before, but I'm bringing it up again. I would like it if at least *some* vehicles could cross fords, it would come in handy sometimes. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> From personal experience, it is never a good idea to cross a Ford. pford [This message has been edited by pford (edited 08-25-2000).]
  11. This actually works? I was under the assumption that CM looked for the CD copy for copy-protections reasons. This sounds like an easy way to defeat it, too easy. I thought that there was a hard encoding on the CD, like predetermined bad sectors, that could not be copied, and to defeat it, the checking code would have to be bypassed.
  12. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Big Time Software: In the upper right corner, click the "Operations" button. Otherwise you're only looking at the regular Battles. Charles<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> DOH!
  13. I was attempting to start a PBEM game using Ardennes-Team DeSobry.cmc I cannot see it in the play section but I can edit it. I can see 'file.cmb' but not 'file.cmc' A fix for rev 1.0.5?
  14. When BTS converts CM to be 'true' MacOS X application, it may be fairly easy at that point to move to Linux since MacOS X is GUI on BSD unix. IIRC, NT does not have the gaming support required so it would have to be implemented.
  15. You may want to e-mail baboon2 with the specifics of your problems with the Voodoo 5 card. He wrote the RAVE code or at least a large part of it. It was my understanding that the Voodoo 5 card would run CM with everything. BTW, if you are not getting any smoke, try hitting the shift-I key several times to scroll through the smoke display. There have been time I was wondering why I was not getting any smoke only to discover I had turned it off previously. Evidently CM keeps track of this in its preference file.
  16. from : http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/archives/aug00/080800.html#S10173 Voodoo5 1.01 Driver Update: Bryan Speece of 3dfx notes there's an update to the Voodoo5 drivers and ROM: " We just posted v1.0.1 of the Mac V5 drivers. They're not officially posted in the normal area of the website. Rather users should upgrade through the button in the About Box of the 3dfx MacTools Control Panel. Then follow the instructions that will walk them through - including the flashing of their ROM's. Mainly a few bug fixes. No big optimizations yet. For instance, v1.0.1 solves the problem with slow resolution switching on older non-DDC-compliant monitors, etc. -Bryan "
  17. jonathan: I'll make this as easy as I can without ordering it for your. Go to http://www.battlefront.com/products/worldwar/cm/index.html It is the only place you can get it.
  18. Wait until the the Voodoo drivers are upgraded to fully implement RAVE. I know that the Mac driver writer for 3DFX is aware that CM blacks out, etc and has been in contact with BTS. I have no idea when it will be available. Their new card will likely work fine, but who wants to shell out another $350. If your are playing, you are probably doing it under software mode without any acceleration from the card. The pre beta 12 drivers for the Mac do not support RAVE. Beta 12 only partially supports it. OK for Bugdom but not CM.
  19. For slopes with roads, it would be nice to have switch-backs, like the old roads in San Francisco. Obviously it would take longer but at least the vehicle could get up the slope.
  20. Which video cards does the Relevator work with? This thread indicated that any Z-buffer PC compatible card using DirectX works, but the reviews on-line I find all indicate that you need an Elsa board.
  21. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by poorfish: Why should I need to disable part of my hardware - the backside cache - just to get a demo to run? Poorfish<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Good quesitons. I wish I had a good answer. I posted this after running several hours of conflict catcher. That is what it came up with and appeared to work. If you read my posting re: this subject, you will see that I also don't trust it. It doesn't make sense, but it worked for me. (Note: this is on a non-native G3 system w/ an upgrade.) The turning off a bunch of extensions, including some of the ATI extensions, is likely a better bet. My suspicion is that it is an ATI extension. I have also noticed that my system will freeze and the MacTool's disk indicator with show disk activity. (It is reported that the Norton disklight has a problem.) It looks like the system has crashed, but then it will wake up once the disk activity has terminated. Likely some backgrond task. Here's wishing for pre-emptive multitasking. I think it would be helpful to start posting the system configurations that work and don't work. I am going on vacation soon so I cannot collate them. Any volenteers?
  22. Driving into work today I was listening to a radio commercial re: Golf course design by some famous golfer who I don't know. The idea popped into my head that the map design feature could be readily adapted to create golf courses and CM adapted to a golf game. Since I don't play golf, I would only buy it if there was one-on-one hand-to-hand combat, the bunkers were armed and the sand traps had land mines. [This message has been edited by pford (edited 06-28-2000).]
  23. CM does not play well with the DiskWarrior init. This may not be this extension's fault since I was also using CDROM toolkit, IIRC has been previously accused. Anyway, the DiskWarrior extension is designed to prevent disk damage and pops up a window reporting a serious directory error with the CM CD. OK, close the window and open CM. CM then reports that the CD is missing. It is still in the drive and on the desktop. Solution: I disabled them both.
  24. I have seen the bottom window text screen messed up on an Rev A iMac with a Voodoo2 card from Game Wizard using their RAVE drivers. I think it is their drivers. The only thing it appear to affect is popping up the shift-key command functions. To solve this I openned the book and look at them. Of course this means you have to buy the game. Is it screwing up the game display window?
  25. <Q>Virtual memory on: 192 MB physical RAM, 58 MB virtual RAM</Q> Re: VM being smaller than real Ram I'm blanking on the technical term for it, but there is only one advantage to having VM smaller than real RAM and that is the appl takes less real RAM to run. As I recall this is due to the difference it 68K and PPC architecture. The actual amount of VM need in this case is quite small, so you can save your disk space by reducing it. With the amount of RAM you have, you may be willing to take the small RAM hit for a moderate speed boost and free disk space by turning of VM.
