  1. If I was part of BTS, TCP/IP would not be on the top of the list, maybe 3rd or 4th. There is a big backlog of orders. There are a lot of disappointed people with buggy behavior, crashes and video problem. (But since they are not psychiatrist or ophthamologist can't much to do here.) Once they get the above done, the enhancements can come. BTW have you noticed how we all acting like children on Xmas morning?
  2. See my post on this forum: lock up question bauhaus I believe this is an extension conflict since I can run CM on a Powerbook G3 233MHz. I know I set the extensions to a game mode I created in Conflict Catcher in which I disabled a bunch of extensions then added them back in until it ran.
  3. As the originator of the disable backside cache "fix" I have always been dubious about my finding. It just does not make sense to me that it should work. First of all, the results of this "fix" were on a G3 upgrade card, not a "real" G3 system, so I don't know how well it works on an iMac. Here are some useful suggestions, I hope. The "proper manner." Take several days off and run Conflict Catcher to track down the extension conflict. You may have to "play" CM several times for each run since the problem is intermittent. If you succeed, e-mail me immediately. (not so) Quick and Dirty (The voodoo dance and incantations) Run Apple Disk First Aid or better DiskWarrior. Rebuild the desktop. Turn off VM if you have enough ram. The Appl say it uses about 3.5 Meg but the About System shows it uses closer to 45 Megs. Upgrade all of your system using system updater and Quicktime updater, or do the same manually. If you are using Extension manager, make a duplicate of the basic standard set and name it CM. Disable anything you think you won't need. Most Control Panels seem to be OK. You will need to keep Game Sprockets, Quicktime and ATI extension. Note: some of the ATI extensions can be real killers like the Rage 128 ones if you don't have a Rage 128 type card. Also some of the off screen video management.(Sorry, I don't remember them off the top of my head.) In desperation, reset the PRAM. http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n2238 http://www.yale.edu/macguide/Procedures/PRAM.html#Other Warning, this will screw with your system clock, network settings, etc. There are PRAM utilities out there such as techtools. And also try that backside cache thing. I had some other games (Tomb Raider II), I don't recall if CM was one of them, that do not like some of the extensions on my son's iMac. Doing the above "helped." Although as of last night, he was complaining of the game crashing/freezing. I have not done the proper incantations on his iMac yet. Good luck PS Also try deleting the CM pref file and, Charles favorite, lower the screen resolution. [This message has been edited by pford (edited 06-27-2000).]
  4. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Moon: - when you click on a vehicle and issue a movement order, an line is drawn to the cursor. Move the cursor slowly down the route you would like your vehicle to take. If it crosses impassable terrain for that vehicle, the line will turn red. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> This requires that the scenario be played. I was hopng for something during the map creation phase. Thanks for the reply
  5. How does one make a single objective paramount and the other objective subordinate? Is there a way of shifting the entire map? I want to enlarge the western edge but increasing the size enlarges the eastern or northern edges only. Is there a quick way to determine if a section of the map is impassable without driving a vehicle through it (or just gaining the experience)? I made some hills and ridges that are too steep for the tanks. Maybe a color coded map which displays movement cost could be added in a later release. As a sub-note, how does one get engineers to blow up and clear a road block? THX
  6. Doesn't that seem queer to your? (Strange w/o any sexual conotation) I have a hard time believing this works and there is not another cause, and I'm the one who posted it. I was shocked to see this in the manual. It shows how diligent BTS is.
  7. Is there a way of designating that units arrive on a road? In the particular situation, the reinforcements arrived on clear gound near the problem areas, It was somewhat random that a unit would be lost. It is more common if the unit is big, in terms of number of troops. and the area they are arriving on is small or narrow area. Also, I have a problem with snipers. It would seem to me that if a sniper is in heavy brush or rubble firing at moving units 200 to 300 meters away with their ambient firing and tank noise, that it would be very hard to know where a single shot came from. Yet, I have the sniper take one shot and all Hell breaks loose. After several minutes I can see that the sniper would be located. Is there a way to keep them better concealed and lower the rate of fire? I want to use them to disrupt activities like mine clearring, etc.
  8. OK, first let me say I have not thoroughly read the book re: this, On the other hand it may not have occured that anyone would something as silly as I did. I created a scenario with lakes and heavy woods near the edge. When re-enforcements arrived, tanks ended up in the woods unable to move or in the water. During play, I rationalized this a break downs of equipment.
  9. Is there suppose to be a poster included or is this something extra?
  10. It looks to me that most favor TCP/IP. It appears to me to be an improvement over hotseat in a LAN. The setting of a timer bothers me. I don't what to get into a point and click fest. While I like Myth II, there is always a rush to get the move done in time. If there is going to be a timer, I like to see a chess timer option, e.g. so many moves in so many minutes, like 40 in 2.5 hours for chess(after set-up) with two clocks showing how much time is left per person. If a player wanted to take 30 minutes at a particular point he/she could do it and the game would not degenerate who can move their mouse the fastest. A defending player may be fairly static while the attacker may need the time to coordinate artilery, etc. This would allow the tempo of the game to be a factor but not the deciding factor.
  11. Bummer. Do you know how well it runs under MacOS X? If the Mac sales do well, what are the chances of moving to OpenGL? If you are not too busy, what is the problem with RAVE (why is it not carbon) other than Apple dropping support? And last, since I have now past the pest threshold, did you get the 3DFX contact info re: VooDoo3 Rave?
  12. I would be interested in know the percentage of MacOS version purchases. I can understand why they would not want to release their total sales here.
  13. For all of those who are driven to promote CM, here's your chance to skew a non scientific survey. http://www.gamespot.com/promos/cgwtop40/index.html
  14. I don't think Bungie will drop Mac anytime soon. Not until MS wins its appeal at least. It would look bad for public relations.
  15. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Mikeydz: Make that 2 Texans who will be without "the package" for at least 1 more day... Allan, can I come by and stare longingly at your copy?<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> More than 2, you can add me. BTW hnh3_cm could you narrow down just where in Texas you are? It is sort of big.
  16. I came across the following add from Other World Computing: iMac GameWizard 3DFX Voodoo II w/ 8MB for Rev A & Rev B Apple iMacs (GWIMAC) $95.00 http://shop.macsales.com/macsales/XLR8yourmac/XLR8yourmac.taf RAVE, and there for CM, works with this. I have one of these cards on a Rev A iMac.
  17. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by -Twilight-: That is what I thought. The game (demo) works fine if I disable the 3Dfx beta12 RAVE driver extension. I hope 3Dfx will release a better RAVE driver soon.... <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Don't run out and buy a new card just yet. I have it on fairly good authority that the person who wrote the Mac 3DFx divers for the VooDoo3 card is going to contact BTS to resolve the problem. I don't know if there has been any communication with Steve and Charles on this subject. They are probably to busy stuffing envelopes. Addendum: Steve or Charles, have you received my feedback message regarding this? [This message has been edited by pford (edited 06-19-2000).]
  18. I have sometimes had sound & video problems, with other programs, when virtual memory was enabled. Try disabling VM and see if that makes any difference. [This message has been edited by pford (edited 06-19-2000).]
  19. I have to admit that I am somewhat confused that this is an issue. It sounds like your e-mail program is not handling attachments. There are several good free e-mail programs, 2 were mentioned earlier. I happen to like eudora. If your e-mail app can handle attachments, the easiest way is usually to drag the pbem.txt file to the e-mail window that your are going to send. And in reverse, drag it off when receiving to the PBEM folder. If you have to self extract the text file, be sure to save as text from the file menu without hard returns. If that doesn't work, try the hard returns. BTW how many Mac uses have a right mouse button? Was this comment ignorance or sarcasm?
  20. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by foxtrot: I have a G3 350mhz 128 megs ram OS9 a voodoo3 with the newest drivers from 3dfx. After the game finishes loading it gives me a black screen. A little help would be appreciated.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Unfortunately, if you searched re: this issue or my name, you would see that this is a known issue. The RAVE for this card is incomplete in the beta 12 drivers. We could hope that the beta 13 drivers will fix this.
  21. In anticipation of the release, would those who have CM web site please post here their requirements/formats for submitting and ranking senerios that are created by the players. THX
  22. Please don't inundate them with e-mail and piss them off. A few should suffice. The primary purpose of this site is not wargame reviews although the founder, Jim Dunnigan., has a long history with wargames. They are well aware of Battlefront.com, see Team Trackless, and should know of Combat Mission. (I know that at least one person associated with them has known of CM for at least 6 months) Their schedules are such that they don't have time to review all the "wargames." While it is nice to have loyal customers, I don’t think Steve and Charles want to hear how annoying we are. As a Mac users, I have heard about those annoying stinking Mac users, and I would not want to see the CM community with that reputation. I don't know if they are open to guest reviewer, but one could ask. It may be better than pestering them. Regards
  23. Well I tried it on another Mac and it worked as advertised. Its a good thing I don't have to be sworn in on what I did before, because under oath I would have said I did it right, but now I doubt myself. Maybe there is a reason I have been clobbered in the e-mail games. [This message has been edited by pford (edited 06-13-2000).]
  24. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Strider: Don't know if this is of any help, but the next to the last screen before the game starts are 4 choices...the first is playing vs the computer, 2nd is hotseat, 3rd is Email, 4th tcp/ip...there is a button below the picture that you press to highlight (at least on a PC)...is this maybe the area you are missing? You should be choosing the "Email" button...<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Been there, done that. I am just going to have to go through it again. If it fails, I'll have to check to see if there is a extension conflict. I will probably wait for the CD if I don't get it working this week instead of re-downloading it. Thanks for the info. Although it sounds stupid, many a time I have been stuck until someone pointed out the obvious. Usually my intuitive grasp of the obvious is solid.
  25. Thanks for the information. In rereading my post, I think I came across a little terse. While I am miffed, it was not from this. I should have said clarify or less provacative phrasing. Thanks again.
