  1. I have to agree with Jimmy on this one. If my field gun is damaged or destroyed, thats one thing. But if the crew for that gun panics and abandons the weapon, which itself is still battle ready, can't they be directed by a command unit to return to it and resume targetting units?("Get your asses back on that gun now!!...uh yessir!"). Perhaps we need a clear explanation of ABANDONED and how it is applied in this game. Thanks, TeAcH [This message has been edited by TeAcH (edited 05-25-2000).]
  2. I know we all talked about this awhile ago when the topic was brought up about the game giving too much information to your opponent when your armor is hit. But here I go again. Why is immobilized armor announced to your opponent? I think this is in direct conflict with the "Fog of War" principle that BTS and CM prides itself on. Here's an example of how it hurt FOW. I was in a VOT game as the Germans with my Panther on the hill. The US player had his Shermans rolling down the road in the valley area when he hit two mines. Once I saw that his tanks were immobilized and in poor firing positions, I used my Panther elsewhere knowing that I could work on them later. This IS NOT something that should be available to your opponent. Please take this out of the game. And while your at it, turn off detailed hits to opponent armor. Let that only be visible when your armor is hit. So say for example I fire at a Sherman and he fires at me. We hit each other. I see that I hit his turret....he sees that I hit his turret with penetration and gun damaged. He hits me and he sees Hit Treads/Tracks..I see hit treads immobilized. Please enable this. 3. Excellent points on both accounts. I wholeheartedly agree!! TeAcH
  4. Thanks for the explanation. Also, I am using a 3d card at 1024x768. Its just that I turned off the trees so that one could see this example. Furthermore, Hypersnap reduced the image quality in compressing the format to lowly JPEG. But enough about the graphics. If it makes any difference, the AI fired the flamethrower on their own at the approaching German infantry unit. My question again is should the "area of effect" for this weapon be increased to capture and improve the effectiveness of this weapon to prevent such an occurrence from happening again? And as far as morale goes, I think the German unit under my control was full of REGULARS. I guess it seems that I am underestimating the fanatical quotient, but the men would have to be robots not to crap their pants after a flamethrower bakes the area. One other question I have then is will issues like these and others be resolved in the form of a patch further on down the road prior to CM2 or is this all there is so there is no sense in bringing issues to light? Despite this, CM is by far one of my top games of all times dating back to the Apple 2+ days. I've talked it up so much, I've gotten friends to preorder. TeAcH
  5. Well, dunno what the concensus on this will be but it seems like there is a tweak needed in the Gold demo regarding flamethrowers and their area of effect / chance to hit. See for yourself. The German unit suffered no losses and no morale hits after walking right through this. Doesn't seem right. -and- Not a scratch. Seems like there should be some mass damage to that unit and or a panic attack!. TeAcH
  6. I have a Viper 2. Have had it for about a month and so far I like it. The only problem with the card is that the drivers seem a bit immature. So, prepare to tolerate some minor probs until the drivers are fully realized. I would also add that to play Combat Mission in all of its beauty on the Viper 2, you can crank the hell out of the resolution if you like, but you need to ensure that the AutoMipMap is checked for the Combat Mission app in the display properties>settings>advanced>direct 3d. 7. For the future, Id like to see an option to print out tactical maps in color. Id take mine, put it in a sheet protector and attack it with a grease pen for my battle. I know we can use a screen capturing util now to get the job done (e.g. hypersnap) but how bout adding this down the road. Your thoughts? TeAcH
  8. In the beta demo, the number pad (with num lock on of course) allow me to change the camera heights. Now, in the Gold demo, seems like this is all camera controls which duplicates the < > [ } etc. Was this on purpose? Thanks for a wonderful game. I played the valley scenario a long long time. I am a certifiable CM addict. Thanks TeAcH
  9. How about some mirror sites? Or CM sites as a temp place to DL the gold demo??
  10. No one out there has an opinion on this one? TeAcH
  11. SB Live! value edition is a great card too. Probably under 60.00 now..OEM version that is. TeAcH
  12. Here's what happened. I was playing LD as Germans during a PBEM game. My opponent parked one of his Hellcats behind one of the two houses at the top of the hill near the entrance point for the reinforcements. I had the idea of shooting down the house with my Tiger who was at the top of the hill where the Germans start (clear LOS) so that I could hopefully blast it away and then have an open shot at the TD there. Well, I targeted the house (which had been previously struck by arty) and the turn played out. The first shot BOOM flattens the house. To my suprise, the Cat hiding behind it was not exposed. All I could see was a large Star. So for the rest of the turn, my Tiger pounded HE round after round into a flattened structure. Immediatley after the turn was over and the new orders phase began, the Hellcat, who had not moved, was in full view of my Tiger. I targeted and the rest is irrelevant. Why did that happen? Thanks, TeAcH
  13. ^^Sorry for my double-post^^ I tried to delete the second one to no avail. Regarding the camera issue, Moon, I do like the camera implentation in CM too. I would agree that a free ranging camera would take a little getting used to. The camera control in CM required some practice to master also. My point is basically that Id like to see the two modes coexist at some point. Just a request thats all. I think that you'll find the free ranging camera much more dramatic and useful once you get the hang of it. Thanks TeAcH PS SS_PL- Buddy. I can't wait for some rematches. We had a dandy chance encounter slug fest. Look for me on ICQ sometime (183078)
  14. Thanks for the reply you two. To answer your question as to why I would like to see a free ranging camera, seemed like the norm nowadays in other games. This is not to say that what CM does is bad at all. Far from that. I like the free ranging camera idea better is all. I also like what you all do too. I think the two modes (the current zoom levels and free ranging) could coexist quite easily. I'm no programmer, so from a implementation standpoint, I don't know how difficult this would be. Yes, I'd like to see the free ranging camera implented sometime down the road in a patch or cm2. I think it adds to the drama and cinematography of the whole battle. Honestly, if it never comes to be I won't be bothered in the slightest. I am quite impressed with this game and how you all have designed it. I talk it up to other computer gamers whenever I get the chance. One thing more. Have you all bought rations and spent time training for the inevitable onslought of armed bands of wives who will surely hunt you all down for creating this game? A game that is gonna cause their husbands to be so transfixed on their computer monitors for days on end, that wives are sure to mount an offesive bent on revenge. Thanks again, TeAcH

  16. Pardon me if these are repeats but I did a quick search and didnt see these covered. 1) Can bridges be destroyed? In last defense, say as the Germans I want to destroy the bridge, can it be done (105mm, HE rounds, etc). 2) Camera control. In CM1 via patch or in the works for CM2, will there be a free controlled camera ala Myth? That is, one without preset magnification levels. One that would allow you to choose your exact zoom level as opposed to canned levels via keystroked zoom levels? Thanks TeAcH
  17. Yeah! He musta been really old playing the game that long! One thousand years+17 hours. No wonder he died. One thing is for sure, I bet he had some helacious B.O. at the time of his death. TeAcH
  18. Thank Fionn. I didn't like the prospect of the later. TeAcH
  19. Why is it that in a PBEM game, some PBEM files you receive dont work. Sometimes, after I select the newly received PBEM.txt file, the game "dings" at the PW entry screen and everytime thereafter when any key is pressed. Is it a bug or game cheating? I mean, could your opponent, who doesnt like the outcome of the turn, cause the file to mess up so you send him the turn again? TeAcH [This message has been edited by TeAcH (edited 03-12-2000).]
  20. Umm..tanks are cool, and, umm..very good. I like them. Those Brit tanks were strong and stuff. So were those "Not-zee" ones. HAHA. You guys are amazing with your WW2 knowledge and grognard super powers. After reading this thread, I wanted to contribute so badly, but I know very little about these sorts of details. Just poking a little fun. You guys are great. TeAcH
  21. Okay. Ill throw my two cents in. There are basically two sides here. One group consists of those who have, mostly, paid in advance for the game and are so eager for it (arent we all) that all they ask for is an update from time to time. Then there is the other side. This group is made up of people equally excited about the game and who have also fronted there money for it. However, this group feels that BTS should not have to write updates frequently (or at all). To do so would distract BTS thus causing uneeded delays. BTS should remain focused on completing the game as soon as feasible. Both sides have some commonalities. They both adore the game, want it on their hard drives yesterday, and are honest to goodness BTS fans. Each realizes the attention to detail and dedication readily apparent in the early demo. Can there be a solution? Is there a middle-ground? What can be done so that all can benefit including BTS? I propose that BTS satisfy everyone with a simple and not terribly time consuming designers log. An online notepad that serves as both a running commentary on the games' progress and a useful bit of data for game development. An example would be something like: 9 MAR 00 - Completed textures on Tiger and Panther tanks. Work to be done on bunkers. 11 MAR 00 - Problem with bunkers resolved. Working on so and so. 15 MAR 00 - Fixed problem with Pfausts not firing at tanks. Game is nearing completion. Still some textures to be redone. I don't think something like that is going to cause the game to be delayed at all. Moreover, new users can look at it as a point of reference before creating threads on topics that have already been talked into the ground. And another thing, the flame wars are unbelievable and downright juvenile. Nuff said. Thanks, TeAcH [This message has been edited by TeAcH (edited 03-09-2000).]
  22. No one wants the BTS gang to stop working on the real game to crank out a new scenario. Neither do I. But it seems like they should have an old one laying around somewhere. Perhaps one of the beta testers would be allowed to release a beta scenario. Fionn? Madmatt? Seems like such a small request. In some ways, I feel that making a request like this for a small new scenario at this point is akin to asking a neurosurgeon if he has change for a twenty during brain surgery. Nevertheless, I truly don't think that it should be that big of a deal to scrape one up (that is if it is sitting in a folder somewhere). I'm sure that any new scenario for the beta would be downloaded almost immediately by everyone here. Thanks TeAcH
  23. I like the second one although I agree with the others. The rivers should be dirtier and not blue at all. Thanks TeAcH
