  1. Wargames especially are great in multiple ways. Not only is it a challenge and you need to use that grey blobby thing inside yer head but it also "demands" you know some history. Some people i know actually became history-addicts because they played SP and wanted to know more and more about the weapons used in WW2. Hey Bakker...still alive?
  2. double post [This message has been edited by PanzerShark (edited 06-22-2000).]
  3. Cpt. Foobar, I also need just 1 minute to know what to do but giving my units orders in 1 minute is not possible and could indeed mean it will take 20 minutes. When the battle is progressing and most enemy-spots are located then it will be indeed small "thinking"-turns. But when i decide to push my tiny tank down the road with hills surrounding it and not knowing what is around the corner....i like to make sure how the LOS is and how i could get away IF i get in trouble. That part takes some time. Aah well....everyone has it's own playingstyle so tcp/ip should/could be included for the people who really need it. I however will never play CM that way. Think we had a nice "old-fashioned" discussion here...think i start another one...ehm what about "Do we really need PBEM?"
  4. Ordered somewhere around may 1999, not expecting it yet though. Package still needs to cross a big blue wobbly blob before it reaches The Netherlands
  5. Ghost, you are right about the part that the youth in Germany feels that way (i am ofcourse also speaking about my German friends and not about the entire population). I do think however that this thread is not very interesting. Especially the part about ***Do some their elders still hold anti-American sediment and pro-nazi ideals? *** This will just result in flames and is NOT informative at all. It's just starting a riot. As i mentioned before, when people follow the news and read newspapers/books, they know very well what is going on in this world.
  6. Sorry, but should these questions really be answered? I mean how do you feel about the war in the USA between settlers and Native Americans. How do i (dutch) feel about the things "us dutch" did to all our colonies? Strange question and if you read some news-papers you know how people think about certain ideas. And although your statement is correct it would like to say the world was in one big crazy war. Sorry, but i kinda dislike the entire "us americans" against "the Axis". Reminds me of some bad pro-american "we are the best" war movies
  7. Set your desktop setting to 1024x768 then start CM. When it asks if you accept the 800x600 res. choose NO. Then it will ask if you like to use 1024x768 and obviously you have to say yes here Works for the demo though....still have no full-copy here
  8. Erik, playing tcp/ip games using LAN is slightly different then over the net. When over a LAN you can probably see your human opponent and through pointy sticks at him when it's taking to long. If you have to wait for your opponent that is hundreds of miles away, throwing sticks is not an option
  9. Wow, didn't know this post would cause such an impact I agree on most parts about why we should have tcp/ip. I do not think tcp/ip is THE selling point of CM though. I don't think BTS will sell more copies if they are adding it. If tcp/ip would be that important then it would have been in there "from the box" and not later using a patch. From my own experience: I was going to buy Vampire the Masquerade. Unfortunately after playing the demo i noticed that the fighting-scenes could not be paused. This means it turned into a click-fest. The company behind this game say they are bringing out a patch which WILL introduce a pause-feature. I am not going to buy this game UNLESS this patch has seen the daylight AND actually works the way the claim it will. Now i am a very patient player , and i am willing to wait until this patch arrives. But i am NOT the entire gaming-public and many people won't wait till this patch arrives and will look for something else. This means less saled, which could be prevented when this feature was in from the start. Also i am always a bit carefull when i am told patches will fix certain things. Take Ultima 9. I have many friends that bought the game although it was very bugged. Origin told customers they would create a "mega-patch" that would solve ALL these problems. After this patch was released many problems however still existed. To end this part: I would personaly NEVER buy a game because the patch that i REALLY need will be released. Also, magazines do not review a game with this patch since it hasn't been released. If many people need this tcp/it thingy then BTS is kind enough to listen to it's customers. BUT if they think this is a major selling-point, i think it would already been there. About the realism part (yes i am not finished ) It is true that the way i play is not realistic. Ofcourse commanders didn't have 30 minutes or more to order their units. BUT the reason why i prefer turn-based games over rts-games is BECAUSE i have the time to think about my strategy. Let's face it, NO one can give orders to over about 50 units in 3 minutes. This means you have to click your butt off turning this game into a...rts Now this ofcourse is the way I don't like to play and seeing from the amount of replies many people DO like it. There's nothing wrong with that. But if we are talking about realism then even a turn with a timer set to 3 minutes is unrealistic. I like to see my man perform actions the way i tell them, i want them to follow the orders i give them. I simply do not have the time to do this in 3 minutes. This means certain actions are performed by my man automatically. Ofcourse killing a Tiger that way brings joy and happiness BUT when YOU gave them that order, and not teh AI, then you do not only feel this joy BUT ALSO pride, because YOUR plan actually worked. Another long post that was ment to be 3 sentences...not good...i'm starting to ramble
  10. After reading some reviews on the net i noticed these to mention one and the same "downfall" every time, namely NO tcp/ip support. Ofcourse if these people had read this messageboard every now and then, or just do a search, they would have known that BTS is working on a patch wich will provide this support. Although i can see BTS is creating this patch, i mean they ALMOST promised it, i was wondering if we should really care. Take your regular game, 30 turns or so. How long will it take to both finish, let's say, the 15th turn? I once PBEM-ed a friend and he was ready in 3 minutes....same turn took me 25 to be absolutely happy with it. Personally i look at the map in a million ways. I take an overhead view so i can see the layout, i then take view 2 or 3 and look at the hills/valleys, i order my troops one by one...using many waypoints. Then i look at these paths in first person so i can see the LOS very well. Now then. This takes me 10-20 minutes on the "small" demo-maps. When the turn is played, i view the replay over and over so i don't miss a thing. In general, a turn on this "small" map takes about 30 minutes. How much fun is that for my opponent that is ready in 3 minutes? Maybe i'm just slow but i think in order to control the battle you WILL or even MUST take a fair amount of time. That's why i always play PBEM, while waiting for a turn you can do some shopping, do the dishes and more (playing CM single player? ) I say: Let BTS have their well deserved holiday and forget all about this patch (just create a new bmp, one that doesn't show the tcp/ip option). I know this is kinda long post, has many typos, and frankly...it's useless . Then again, i'm at work, still haven't received the game (will take another week i guess) and am bored. What's your excuse? PanzerShark **edited some typos that were really REALLY bad** **edited even more typos that were really REALLY bad...going for the coffeemachine now** [This message has been edited by PanzerShark (edited 06-21-2000).] [This message has been edited by PanzerShark (edited 06-21-2000).]
  11. Unfortunately the virus hasn't spread across The Netherlands yet. I think we are to smart to get infected....i wish i was STUPID (and maybe less goodlooking)
  12. Or......show the wargame-community that we are the smart ones and are acting mature. C'mon people, we all know CM rocks bigtime and we know that NO game has ever accomplished this sense of depth, accuracy and more. Let's just write to magazines instead (as most already did), and stop this nonsense. Just my 2 "sounding like my dad" cents
  13. It's not in me to flame people...unless they piss me off (j/k). Anyway, before i comment on rude/childish posts i always double-check the name AND the amount of posts this person has made (so i can see whether or not he's just trolling). Have no fear Blackie...your name is as clear as a baby-butty
  14. Well, one thing i replayed over and over and over, was when i charged 3 squads in the woods. When the squads noticed eachother they started lobbing grenades like madmen. Grenades were flying all over the place. It must have been about 10 or so Kinda reminded me of the mg42 assault in SPR (the one in the meadow). Also i liked it that much since the 3 german squads where blown to tiny pieces while my men were only a bit shaken. I was going to give them some shiny medals if that Stug hadn't found them
  15. Screaming Demon, i pre-ordered the same day i posted the original message or somewhere close. Check the date of the original post, hence my reply from an hour ago. **edited** just some typo-bashing. **done** [This message has been edited by PanzerShark (edited 06-15-2000).]
  16. Aaah c'mon guys, replying to a post i made more then a YEAR ago? That is just sick (or ultimate boredom )
  17. Pre-ordered may '99 and another one 3 weeks ago. I'm not expecting CM soon on my doorstep though (the netherlands will take more then 10 days...believe me ***edited*** As far as i know there has been a post like this some weeks ago...many replies, so maybe worth checking [This message has been edited by PanzerShark (edited 06-14-2000).]
  18. Well if people put the word "spoiler" (as everyone does) into the subject, you can easily ignore the post when needed. I will read this UBB every day (more like every hour ) since, unfortunately, has become an addiction
  19. 1)yip 2)a game 3)yip 4)yip 5)nope if you have a cd-burner, unzip the file and copy it onto your cd. Then install from cd as usual. If you don't have a burner, unpack onto your hd and install BUT it takes twice the installation-size. Hope it helps
  20. You don't like UBB-boards? Kinda reminds me about a Blackadder-episode. Read and weep (or laugh). Lord Blackadder, Percy Precy and Baldrick are on a big galleon with a legless captain (think his name is mad jack). Their plan is to sail from England to France but after 2 months they still hadn't reached this land. The story continues..... Capt: I have a confession to make Blackadder: What? Capt: I don't know the way to France. Blackadder: Ooh God, well maybe the crew knows the way? Capt: Crew?....sir? Blackadder: Yes crew...every ship needs crew you know. Capt: Well...the ideas are divided on that part. Blackadder: What do you mean? Capt: Well...every captain says yo DO need a crew, and I say you DON'T. To make a short story shorter. Change "crew" into UBB and you see what i mean
  21. As a second poster to this thread, i can already tell this thread will be closed soon. Mark my words
  22. Ordered over 14 moths ago...prolly longer, ordered another copy 1 week ago
  23. I can't really say if Flamers do explode or not since i have never seen them do so. But mortars, tanks, bazoos and schrecks can cause big area fires. One of my tactics is attacking enemy full strength with my tanks when they are in the woods. Often the tanks have no LOS but burning down the woods with 4 squads or more in it, usually does the trick (area fire).
