1. Why do user created scenarios default to the Saved game directory? And why on earth did BTS make saved games default to the exact same file name as the user made battle/op??? I accidentally overwrote a battle that I was working on because when I tested the battle and saved my progress, the savegame filename defaulted to the original battle filename. Some hard work was lost. is there anyway I or BTS can change these defaults?
2. I will finish the beta version of this Operation within a day or two. I will need some beta testers willing to give some feedback. This will be a big op, so you may need a fast machine. I will probably post the beta on the CMHQ, but will keep all of you informed. thanks, Pak
3. Thanks for the feedback, guys. I was most worried about the play balance, since I didn't have a chance to fully test it. I feel I have to make some explanations for a couple of your suggestions and comments. SPOILERS*** JeffRaider- The flak unit that is the first reinforcement is only a company+ strong. This is a fictional attack added by me because without it, the third battle would be awefully dull. The second german reinforcement(Panzer Brigade 107) actually happened. I only put two platoons of Panthers in this attack despite it being a major attack from a Brigade size force. So there is hardly a even a battallion size force let alone a regiment size force on the second day. Plus, you should have two companies of US Paras, not one. All other units, including the 57mm AT gun are historically accurate. The paras use bazookas and that 57mm gun to beat off the first attack. The one major problem I can see is that if the Panthers started on the Son side(North) of the canal. If they did, then I will have to fix this, they are supposed attack from the far side of the map and be forced to use the bridge to get to Son. Of coarse, this depends if you are able to advance all the way to the bridge in the second battle or not. KVERDON- Hmmm, I ran into a similar problem in the Arnhem Bridge Op that I'm now building. I think I will change no mans land down to 0 meters, maybe I'll make it 20 turns also. Funny thing about all the buildings being flattened- There's a photo of the Son Bridge taken in the 60s and all of the buildings are there, intact. I compared it with the old photo taken with a Panther tank within 50 meters of bridge - same buildings. I wish I could have forced XXX Corps to attack on the Eindhoven side of the map, but limitations in the editor prevent me from doing that. You just have to rationalize it: pretend that elements from XXX Corps have already come through and were on there way to Nijmegen when they got a radio call from the troopers holding the Son Bridge. The tanks turned around to come back to Son. I think this actually happened anyway. I put an 88 right by the bridge and another one in the field to the west (the same spots where Close Combat had them)- you need to stick with scenario default for them to appear in those spots. Don Burgett's new book is out? cool. I've got his first (Curahee) and second (Seven Roads to Hell) books, both are excellent and very detailed. I was hoping his new one would be out before I did the Son Op. CUCHULAINN- I think I can give a little more depth on the far side but I have to say that it was my intent to keep the Germans close to the Canal because that's where the actual counter attacks came from. Panzer brigade 107 attacked along the canal from the east. Unfortuately, the editor doesn't give me control of where the reinforcements arrive, therefore the german player can setup anywhere on the southern side(top of the map if you're allies) of the canal. I will be adding some trees along the banks of the canal because a photo of Son Bridge taken in the 60s shows some mature trees in the background. Thanks for all the info and feedback [This message has been edited by Pak40 (edited 08-21-2000).]
4. I don't think they have this feature, which sorely disapointed me. I got really pissed when I was designing my first operation only to discover that I had accidentally set it to 'battle'. I had to redraw part of the map. What a waste of time!
5. Thanks for the update guys. For some reason I hadn't seen anything about this in the discussion board. I can't believe that dynamic LOS is too hard to keep track. Heck, they could at least abstract it and have only vehicles check dynamic LOS. It's not so important with troops, but vehicles it is.
6. Hi Steve,Charles and others, I was playing one of your operations the other day when one of my Tiger tanks shot a round through another Tiger to knock out a British tank. Just so people wouldn't say I was full of bull, I captured a sequence of shots and posted them here: http://www.members.home.net/jroland2/cmsnafu.htm please check it out Anyone else experience this?
7. I need some testers for my Son Bridge Op which is now available for download at CMHQ. Jeff
8. A unit that draws a black line to it's HQ is not "out of contact" - it only suffers command delay penalties and doesn't benefit from the HQ bonuses. Also, you can look at it in this perspective: The unit that you advanced ahead of your main force is primarily a recon unit. Most recon units would have a radio of some sort, at least on the US side.
9. If I'm willing to slug out a 2 hour CC game then you can bet I'll spend just as much time or longer in a CM game. count me in
10. I used to trust PC Gamer and Mr. Trotter with his wargame reviews but have since lost faith when they rated both CC III and IV in the 90+ %. Ironically, CC2 - the best game of the Close Combat series has the worst rating- go figure. Ianc, BTW - I've noticed that the "Review" section on the PC Gamer website doesn't have any of the reviews. It's been like that for some time. The links to reviews go to another web site - dailyradar.com which doesn't have the reviews that are published in PC Gamer.
11. "1. CM depicts battles over maximum a few days. This is not enough to increase the experience for any unit. " This is so not true. Any soldier on the front lines for a few days of intense combat quickly learned a lot. After just a few days, many of them were considered veterans or they were at least "not Green". There is a limit to how much they can learn, though. You wont see a green unit go to an elite status within a few days, that's obsurd. There should be at least one level of experience increase for units in a CM campaign. But if a unit's turn over rate is high it will likely remain green because it keeps getting green replacements.
12. I started playing the 6 battle operation tonight only to be extremely disapointed. It only lasted one battle. The battle debriefing said that the operation was an Axis Total Victory although the Germans never got anywhere near the town of Noville. Also, the casualties were very even on both sides. How on earth could it be an Axis total victory? Why didn't it go the second battle?
13. Bruno, it's real simple. Just click the bullet labled "Order" to the left of this message. That's the only place you can get it.
14. Hey Moon, I tried ordering from that place but my email got sent back to me. Are they still taking orders for maps???
quote:
Originally posted by Moon: WARNING! THIS IS A SHAMELESS PLUG! And if you can't read french (or find out that IGN is not selling directly ), go here: http://www.gamesofwar.de and click on MAPS.

15. Anyone else catch the production update on Ambrose's Band of Brothers? This looks like it's going to be another fine poduction from Speilberg and Hanks. They were actually building entire European towns from the ground up. They also showed some of the tanks that were being constucted, a Tiger and what looked like a Marder. This wont show up on HBO until 2001, so we'll just have to wait patiently.. again.
16. In response to your tactics: 1. I remember reading some detailed accounts about how 2nd and 99th infantry in the bulge dealt with german armor during the bulge. One effective tactic was to call in artillery which would drive off the german infantry, then send in lone bazooka teams using stealth to knock out the german armor which usually chose to wait out the barrage, even though their infantry support had buggered off. This tactic works best in wooded areas - tree bursts were very effective against infantry and would usually drive them off and create a lot of carnage and confusion. 2. This was a common tactic I used in Close Combat. My theory was that three shots against one will almost always prevail. Just be damn sure you know what you're going up against. If your enemy has a concealed AT gun in the woods then you can bet at least two of those tanks will be toast. 3. This is very common and probably the most under-used tactic by wargamers. It should be used a lot more to flush out the enemy. I know I and others used it a lot in Close Combat, usually with moderate success. It should be more effective in CM.
17.
quote:
Originally posted by jeroencottaar: Alright then, is there any other place to order? Because I'm going to have to convince my father to do it, and this site just doesn't look professional.

If the demo doesn't convince you or your dad that this is a PROFESSIONAL quality game then I don't know what will. Well, maybe if you read all of the Pofessionally written Reviews by all of the Professionally published magazines (see "Reviews" link to left) it will convince your dad that this game is the best wargame published to date. I'm not trying to be a smart ass, I'm just stating the facts about the reviews. Let me say this out loud - NIETHER YOU OR YOUR DAD WILL GET RIPPED OFF FROM THIS SITE - this is a quality product that has already received rave reviews. And I say all of this while I still wait for my copy of the game due to a mix up in the address which was probably my fault. I know my copy will arrive soon, BTS has been kind enough to keep me informed of the shipping progress.
18. Manta Ray, This wasn't a complaint, it was just an idea that I had. I was just throwing it out to Steve to see if it might save us all some time. But I heard from Steve last night and found out that the suite number was left off my address. So everything should be fixed soon. BTW I've showed extreme patience since I've been waiting for this game for almost a year. I've only posted one "complaint" thread and that one was posted because I couldn't find any sort of phone support for BTS and Steve's so backlogged with email that it took 3 days for him to respond to mine.
19. I canceled my pre-order and went ahead and ordered all over from scratch. What do you think??
20. And they're are people who ordered last year and still havn't received copies. There must have been some sort of goof up with the mailing, it seems that several people who pre-ordered last year arn't receiving their copies.
21. it's always $9.95, I bought it over a year ago for the same price. B&N publishes it so they're able to sell it for cheap.
22. "Well, it feels pretty good except I don't think I've had a good night's sleep in weeks! Success is great but man are we busy...! Charles" OK, you guys have time to respond to this guy's completely unimportant post but havn't bothered to respond to mine. Where's the support in this company????
