  1. I thank everyone, I'll have to take a closer look, based on the Senior response, (I'm a big fan of the pause button, (and save before I makes a risky move).

    Then you should love WeGo.

Keep in mind tho, that no matter what others say about WeGo being "the way CM is supposed to play" I know that at least one of the original developers (I want to say Steve here) actually prefers realtime.

So to claim that realtime isn't the way to play CM is pretty biased.

(this coming from someone who loathes realtime and loves WeGo).

Ps. One of the greatest lessons I've learned from CM is just how much can happen in one measly minute. Me and my friend always look at eachother with a certain look of "oh, if only you knew" when someone says "a minute is so short, you can't do anything in a minute" in normal conversations.

  2. Come, WeGo!

(It's the game mode where both sides plot their moves than press a button and let the game play out those moves without player control. Turn based is not really in this game since that means one side does their moves and then the other and then back to the first one.)

  3. But oh dear lord are the forums septic!

There are tons and tons of people completely (and I mean religiously) convinced that the game is russian biased and any bug found on a german tank is put there on purpose by the devs (and completely ignoring all bugs on russian tanks in that reasoning).

And then there are those who are convinced that an 85mm shouldn't be able to damage a tiger at anything above 100 meters from any angle...

The forums seriously need some grognards to show up and school them.

But I doubt anyone would put up with the armchair historians on those forums for long.

It doesn't help that the game is still in beta but people are treating it like it's the final release...

So things like an apparantly malfunctioning fuze setting on the 88 L/56 Pzgr 39 are making people say that ALL german guns are malfunctioning and whatnot...

Despite proof that russian tanks are also suffering from bugs...

    It's a mess :(

  4. Oh come now, it's not really hard to find which mods aren't working properly.

After all, we can only mod sound and graphics.

So if the sounds are off, just remove the soundmod (or the sounds for whatever weapon/thing is sounding off).

If a tank looks all wierd and strange, remove the tanks mod.

If the terrain looks strange, remove the terrain mods...

    And so on.

The only times there are "major" problems is when using the animated text mod (but you should count on that being outdated with every major update) and when you forget to remove your mods before instealling.

Other than that, it's really easy.

  5. So ground forces is out? Or still in beta? Downloaded the update so I'll have to check it out tonight

    It's in open beta.

I only play in simulation mode now tho since that's borderline "too arcadey" for me anyway :)

But it's oodles of fun on a good day and extremely frustrating on a bad day (like today... 6 matches, 6 losses... 4 of which I didn't even get a single kill in)

  6. Far from it. Just for the record, for the last year I've been playing Unity of Command a lot. It is just barely historically accurate enough to appease me, but is great fun and I love it for what it is. For the last month or so, I've mostly been playing HoI2, although it must be said that that poor game is a terrible mess in more ways than I will try to list here. But it is not entirely without entertainment value and given the lack of grand strategy games available on the Mac, it fills for now a certain niche in my gaming life.

And as far as elitism goes, I am not entirely against it when it has some actual merit. But it is something that needs to be watched carefully as in the long run it can be candy coated poison. One wants to believe it, thus may cling to it far beyond the time it is merited.

    Michael

I play alot of Star Wars: The Old Republic.

It's like suuuuuuuuber historically accurate :D

  7. Y'know, one of these days the whiners are going to succeed in convincing BFC that they're in the wrong market and doing it all wrong anyway. They'll succeed in convincing BFC to switch to doing "My Little Pony" iphone games for the Japanese pre-teen market (because that's where the real money is). And us wargamers will be left out in the cold.

Actually, that's not a bad idea.

Make every other game they develop a "my little pony" iphone game just to rake in enough cash to make another CM game :P

  8. I've completely fallen in love with this little gem :D

Sure, it's arcady but it's buckets of fun :)

And it has a simulation mode, which is alot less arcady but still far from what I'd call "simulator" :P

Here's a vid of my first battle in simulation mode:

Ps. sorry for the poor graphics, I have to have them turned almost to the lowest to even run the game above 30 fps.

  9. My whine is that the games don't cost enough.

I want BF to do well financially so that they can hire the people needed to do things faster and more swiftly implement the features that are often called for in these forums.

If one calculates the man-hours of playing pleasure that every CM title has given us, there are very few, if any, other computer games that can compete in terms of hours "lived" on our hard drives.

In the past I considered that each CM title from the days of CM1 was worth over $300 when compared to the cost of the games I used to purchase and discard a few weeks later.

My only beef with the current system of "families" and "modules" is that they are a PITA to upgrade and patch individually compared to the enormous convenience that CM1 provided by having an entire theatre and in the case of CMBB the entire of the WW2 era in one single install.

The majority of us here in these forums would pay more for faster releases, improved/additional features etc. On the other hand, I have no idea of the demographics of the majority of BF's CM2 customers, and it's possible that they are nothing like those of use who frequent these forums.

Well here's a nice way for you to pay more for the games:

Buy extra copies for people who can't afford it.

I'm not talking about people who just feel that the price is too high (screw those people!) but the people who would be willing to pay it, but just can't afford it.

Take me for example; I'm 37 years old, unemployed for almost four years now. I've had to move back in with my mother because the "friend" I shared a flat with didn't think I was as fun to share a flat with when I couldn't afford partying and going out every so often so he kicked me out. I have an average income of 5000sek/month (that's around 500 euro) and that covers the bills and lets me help pay most of my own food.

But it leaves precious little for "frivolous things" like computer games.

Now, you could theoretically buy two copies of the game and give one to someone in my situation.

That would let you sponsor BF with more money and also help a fellow CM player "stay in the game" so to speak.

Now, I want to be clear here, I am not asking you to buy me a game.

Some other kind soul already did that. (Thank you again, you know who you are :D )

But it is an option if you want to sponsor the company.

Kinda like what I did back in the day when I had job and loved the show Firefly. I bought several copies of that show and gave it away to friends and family.

For no other reason than because I wanted to sponsor the creator of the show and to bring the joy of the show to those I love.

Same principle here. (just don't buy the game for your mom or anything)

  10. It would be very helpful to have the "one disk to install and get up to date". We all have to get new machines eventually, and I dread having to install half a dozen families of CM2 games with all the upgrades and patches that each now has in exactly the right order or you have to install it all again.

What do you think of BF selling an updated disk (at a nominal price) to those of use who already have the games and modules?

Actually, even a download of the latest version with all upgrades and patches in place would be much appreciated.

One disc to rule them all?

  11. Pelican Pal - the Russians used a lot more captured fausts than they did schrecks. There were more of them around, there was no issue with finding reloads, etc. Admittedly in the last 18 months of the war, and most of them in the last 12.

The standard Russian infantry AT vs light armor, though, was the ATR. If you give every Russian platoon an ATR, they have some ability to hurt halftracks and such. The other item that is realistic and effective - if limited in range - is pioneers with demo charges.

A reasonable Russian infantry AT special formation might be built around 3 pioneer squads with demo charges, plus 3 tank hunter teams with tommy guns and RPG grenades (hand thrown), plus 6 ATRs, and a good company HQ unit with morale bonuses. They actually did things like that, much more so than having captured panzerschrecks.

They also kept on using towed 45mm anti tank guns to the end of the war, typically just in pairs, with tungsten ammo, and the later models with better muzzle velocity. Those will hole any light armor there is, and all the plain German armor (not Tigers) from the flank, or close enough from the front with that T ammo.

But if they needed to chase down tanks or light armor in a town, e.g., the big AT platoon described in the previous paragraph is how they'd do it.

    Tommy Guns??
