  1. 2nd battle was not as fun lol. My youngest attacked across a railroad embankment with 8 PZ IVs and lost all of them. All of his tanks for some reason targeted three halftracks and were murdered by the British tank destroyers.

Re-match is tonight with a lot more caution being used for tank combat. Hard lesson learned but they were enthusiastic for another battle:)

I think the "more caution needed" is a lesson learned hard for many people who are new to the CM franchise.

People tend to think of tanks as pretty much invincible, but that illusion is quickly shattered.

  2. When a crew bails out of a bunker the results can be very messy. From the point of view of the tac AI of the attacking troops, it seems to be as if the crew appeared unexpectedly out of nowhere. Sometimes the crew gets mowed down, sometimes they shoot several attackers, panic, and flee.

Yeah, I learned long ago to alwasy bring a covering team to help the engineers taking out a bunker.

That way there's at least two units "looking" for the enemy when they come out. Increases the odds of the ensuing confusion to favor me.

  3. They were basically relegated to the same type of units that used the MP18/28.

So yeah, they might have seen combat use here and there but very rarely and mostly against partisans or even civilians.

I guess that at the end of the war though, in situations like the battle of berlin, they might very well have been used.

  4. For the record, the MP41 is not the Erma. The Erma was developed from the Vollmer machine pistol designed during the 1920s. The mention in Wiki about the legal action is accurate for the MP 41 however, but once again, the MP 41 is not the MP Erma. The MP Erma had a magazine that fed from the side (Sten style) although it did have a wooden stock with a vertical foregrip. The MP 41 had a magazine that fed from the bottom ala the MP 40, although it had a wooden stock as well. There are at least 11 German made Maschinenpistole type weapons used by the German army during WW2

    MP18/1

    MP 28/11

    MP 34/1

    MP 35/1

    MP Erma

    MP 38

    MP 38/40

    MP 40

    MP 40/11

    MP 41

    MP 3008

edited to add that I'm not sure where I read Erma in the post above. I must have been hallucinating or something.

You read it here: "The MP 41's production run was brief, as Erma filed a successful patent infringement lawsuit against Schmeisser's employer, Haenel."

And this would be the Erma referred to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erma_Werke

Now, please calm down your inner grognard and enjoy a glass of whiskey or something else because that tirade was pretty unnecessary :D

  5. Because it saw extremely little use.

This is what Wikipedia had to say about it (yes, yes, I know "don't trust wikipedia" bla bla bla):

"The MP 41 was not introduced as a service weapon with the German Army, but saw limited use with some SS and police units. They were also exported to Germany's ally, Romania. The MP 41's production run was brief, as Erma filed a successful patent infringement lawsuit against Schmeisser's employer, Haenel."

Which is interesting since I didn't know that they did patent infringement lawsuits during the war :/

I just wish they'd implement the MP 41® and MP717® as there are plenty of evidence that it was used by german troops on the front lines even in the west.

  6. I'm currently playing "Bloody Dawn". I've noticed that all of my Shermans except one are carrying "Smoke" rounds. But' date=' the M4A3(75)W is armed with "WP". I don't if this reflects history or not. I suspect someone on the forum might know.[/quote']

IIRC the reason for not making WP anything different from regular smoke in-game was that you couldn't set things on fire.

  7. Lille Fiskerby,

Then, sadly, the game has it wrong. From the Churchill Tank Wiki, Churchill AVRE

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Churchill_tank

"The Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers was a Churchill III or IV equipped with the Petard, a 290 mm Spigot mortar, throwing the 40 lb (18 kg) "Flying dustbin" with its 28 pound high explosive warhead; a weapon designed for the quick levelling of fortifications, which was developed by MD1. The petard was reloaded by traversing the turret to the co-driver's hatch. The co-driver then breaks down open the petard barrel and pushes the petard round into the barrel and then closes it. The co-driver's hands are briefly exposed during the process."

    Michael Emrys,

Fair point, but the question specifically pertained to the Crab, and I responded accordingly. Other than having seen a John Bachelor illustration of the Matilda based flail in one of those Ballantine's Illustrated Guides, I know pretty much zero on the subject of Allied flail tanks prior to the Crab.

    Regards,

    John Kettler

Mine reloaded without being unbuttoned, so I think Lille is wrong about that detail.

  8. We don't know that. He might be a sadistic serial killer.

    ;)

    Michael

Naah, she gave me this bloody thing called a conscience. Can't even commit petty crime like shoplifting or burglary (of rich peoples houses)... that could have helped when I was broke and unemployed, but noooo... she had to go and give me a conscience :/

    :P

  9. Btw. for all of you who wish you had my mom.

Keep in mind that my mother was an alcoholic for the first 35+ years of my life.

It wasn't until my alcoholic stepdad (who tried to strangle me several times during my childhood and who was extremely verbally abusive) died that she cut down on the drinking.

So while I have a mother who likes to do stuff like that now, she wasn't exactly the greatest mom growing up.

    :(

Just felt I had to add that for some reason.
