  1. Nope, never seen THAT. I feel for ya, but if that was very common this board would be on fire. I'll be interested to hear Matt's findings, from your file and the Other Authorities.
  2. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by M. Bates: It mostly happens with unidentified vehicles, but I have also seen this with bailed crews, but it does not happen with units that are engaging each other in combat. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Unidentified vehicles mostly ARE sound contacts, and DO jump around as your guys guess their location. Bailed crews will disappear and reappear if they are captured, and none of your other units have LOS to them. They reappear when you establish the LOS, but as Captured (I've seen this).
  3. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Pillar: No it won't. The unofficial rule is that any thread where the prospect of it being long are mentioned, it will end up being short.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> The special Manieri Rule supercedes the Prospect of It Being Long Rule, unless smoke has been fired, in damp weather, prior to spotting by the FO of an un-bogged SP artillery unit. And it wasn't. Welcome back, Cap'n. What happened with school and enlistment? While you were gone, we went to a hex-based system with an emphasis on aggressive high-speed recon. Madmatt was banned. Dead bodies now ooze blood. BTS hired Username as a full-time consultant. The PTO modpack was released, with astounding reviews, but has been blocked by a restraining order from Mitsubishi Corp. A single thread, called the Cesspool, is bigger than the United States Congress, but remarkably similar. These are just some highlights. The preceeding was practically untrue, except for the lies.
  4. I think this is going to be a long thread...
  5. No, there really isn't. It's a rather popular request, about 3 times a week, and BTS has acknowledged that it would indeed be cool, but it is a Very Big Deal to code. Most of us are saving our old game turns for that special day... but if it ever comes, it probably won't work with them, either. But it will happen eventually, I think.
  6. Ahem. We will be needing bicycles for the Singapore/Malaya modpak...
  7. I sure didn't knock mods (did anybody?). But old Mr. 300MHz is better off without 'em. CM is running great for me and I'm going to leave it at that, 'til a new machine.
  8. Matt and Kwazy: My congrats also... and thanks for all the free time you put in, before this was official. Really makes me feel that sycophancy pays in the long run!
  9. It specifically mentions Americans versus Japanese at Iwo Jima, and Russians vs. Germans at Stalingrad. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Battlefield 1942 recreates the most famous battles of WWII in full 3D, and allows players to experience events like D-day, Iwo Jima, and El Alemien from a first person perspective. The game promises to include action packed multiplayer gaming along with a challenging single player experience. As a strong multiplayer game, Battlefield 1942 pits players against player as two teams struggle for tactical supremacy. The game will offer unrestricted use of fighters planes and bombers, armoured vehicles and ever warships in a first person perspective that will use every aspect of the battles of World War II. The single player section of the game is built on the same premises as the multiplayer game and time spent perfecting skills on one of the games will help players perform well in the other. During single player missions players will learn how to use terrain, vehicles and friendly bots to ensure victory, and the various missions and campaigns will present players with a constant flow of new challenges. Players will be able to choose between joining the Allied Forces of Great Britain, USA and Russia, or the Axis Forces of Germany and Japan. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> I always wanted a first-person warship.... 10. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Mr. Clark: Methinks I need to revert to the originals... I don't care as much about graphics as gameplay anyhoo.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Aha! That explains it, Mr. Clark. We were comparing hardware (as boys will do) on another thread, and despite similar "archaic" rigs, you seemed to be having more trouble than I was. I play the game absolutely stock, right off the CD + patches. No lock-ups, some minor choking on large scenarios with lots of smoke (so far I still use the high-res smoke), but they play. I am jealous of the mods I've seen but I'm already so immersed, the GF is going to have me committed. I decided to just say NO to mods until I get a newer rig. Unless I get around to that Japanese Army mod... I keep seeing palm trees and rubber plantations, and wondering which German AFV characteristics would make a good Jap medium for Slim River...
  11. Could be the MG was knocked out, and the crew surrendered afterward?
  12. He surrendered. That doesn't mean they physically grabbed him and tied him up. He just got sick of whatever they were throwing at him, and threw up his hands, and said "I give...". From that time on he is listed as captured.
  13. Yes, very nice. One of the few reviews to post some decent screen shots (someone's been loading modpaks!). Can't wait to get some T-80s in my sights... SOMEDAY... I would spend some serious cash for a CM-style construction kit that allowed creation of other armies and units, so I could use this engine for the Crimea, Spanish-American War, the Albigensian Crusade... someday....
  14. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Mr. Clark: What the bloody heck? Am I the ONLY person on the earth with a low-mid level system?<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> P3-300, 128 Mb RAM, Voodoo 3-3000, 19" Impression 7 Plus monitor. Extra RAM and the Voodoo were just for CM. This little screamer was pretty hot 3 years ago... actually, it runs CM great, though you can see it choking a little on the large scenarios. As soon as I sell my little boat, in comes the new one. And I figure if I go to one meal a day I can justify a cable modem.
  15. All God's Panzers are special... just gotta find out what they good at. The PSW 234/3 with a Vet crew for 84 C-Marks- that's a bargain. StuGIII and the StubbyH are practically free, for what they can do. Puma rox dewdz, but I usually avoid it because of its rarity. Hetzers- crappy body styling but effective (& cheap) in their role. Did someone say MkIV? As an Axis kinda guy, I know I hate Greyhounds and even those zippy little-bitty Brit things. Stuarts have their uses, since the game doesn't model star flares. The Chaffee has a great role if you don't treat it as an MBT. Disadvantaged armor is cool, and you get the closest parking spaces. But please, no Hotchkiss fans- you have your own support group/recycling centers, and you need them.
  16. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Mr. Clark: I'm planning on buying a voodoo 3 card specifically for Combat Mission. It will be the ONLY time I have EVER upgraded for a game...<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Precisely what and why I did. Now I'm going to buy a great honking computer for the sole purpose of playing CM (and giving mama-san this one, to buy some peace). I think I'll offer my old 4Mb card for free, to all those who bought CM, and frequent the forum, without a computer. It's the very least I can do. Flash your heliographs to my email address and the first respondent wins. Please include S&H.
  17. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by David Aitken: Moreover, the voice of those who can't actually afford a computer in the first place isn't heard very loudly here.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> <FONT SIZE="6">?</FONT> [This message has been edited by Mark IV (edited 09-19-2000).]
  18. Beg to differ, respectfully of course. I've "Bogged" lots of vehicles of all sizes in real life. Europe is famous for the muddy conditions which prevailed in both wars. There often aren't ANY dry areas; rain and snow are theater-wide in CM terms. You can't tell much about the depth of mud or snow by looking at it. I've seen (and driven in) 2m+ deep ditches that looked like level terrain. You can plow along in knee-deep mud and suddenly plunge up to your neck, especially if it's been chewed up by arty and other units. And then you can throw a track trying to get out. I don't know how any level of crew could be expected to tell what is under the surface of mud and snow, especially when the human player has told them the general path they must follow. Driving a tank requires the least experience and training of the crew positions, and while skills improve with time, AFVs bogged all the time in Germany, Holland, Belgium, and France, and they still do. I've seen lots of AFVs bogged and immobilized in Hoehenfels and Grafenwoehr. The sharp driver has a much better idea of what to do once he's stuck, but sometimes there's nothing you can do.
  19. You don't mention the conditions- I assume the ground was Damp? What about Snow/Deep Snow? "I'd think elite driver would almost never immobilize his vehicle, he might get bogged, sure. But seeing the situation is hopeless. he'd likely stop trying before the engine overheats." Ground pressure is ground pressure. If crew experience makes a difference, it probably should be in the likelihood of un-Bogging before the vehicle becomes Immobilized. If they stop trying to free the vehicle, isn't that about the same as Immobilized? It sounds as though you're assuming that Immobilized means engine trouble, but I think it means you've either thrown a track, or simply buried it to the extent that it can't be dug out in the time-frame of a CM scenario.
  20. One interesting perspective on this is to look through OOBs of the historical scenarios. Most of these are meticulously researched... and I suggest that a commander who had the opportunity to look at these maps first, and purchase (or assign) units accordingly, would not have chosen the units which actually ended up fighting the real battles.
  21. 1) "20 minutes a day" has been shown to be wrong. Editing, evaluating, and non-code related functions obviously take longer. 2) You may start your own site and make or publish mods all day. Is Matt guilty of success (the most popular site by far)? He has no monopoly. 3) He only places restrictions on those who choose to offer mods via his site. I can make my own mods and send them to you, and vice versa, without restriction. In a sense, he is a carrier (probably not the first time he's been called THAT!) offering free "shelf space" to those who want their labors publicised. They are not compelled to take advantage of it. 4) Increasing traffic is good business. Matt's key to increasing traffic has been to provide great content, and a comprehensive rallying point for fans of this great game. jpinard, I am sorry to hear about your illness. I don't know what it has to do with your gripe with Matt, however, and I wonder why you chose to introduce it to this discussion? If you call into question someone's ethics, you should make sure your accusations stand on their own two feet. This was already discussed to death anyway. Some of the other shots you have taken at Matt during the course of your crusade are very discourteous.
  22. Thank you, Fernando. The spiked "Pickelhaube" was dropped altogether in 1918, but had been on the way out since 1915, when the "Stalhelm" or steel helmet came on line to reflect the hazards of modern war. The original Pickelhaube were made of pressed leather and were designed to prevent sword injuries, not shrapnel wounds. They also had camo covers for them in the early 20th century.
  23. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Mannheim Tanker: Viva Superior!... Think anyone would notice?<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Canadian shoppers and gamblers, for sure, particularly if you devalue your currency. At 20 pine cones to the Canadian dollar, you would see an increase in tourism and even more sales of liquor and cigarettes. ("Carry that case of vodka to the truck for you?" "No, we'll drink it right here, eh."). Is a pastie really a pastie if it contains no rutabaga?
