1. Coincidently, Major Tom, the show that started all this thread did cover the fact that Gen. Auk did devise the plan that Monty used and also said that it was followed precisely by Monty. It also said that Gen. Auk was sacked over his apparent lack of initiative, and replaced by Churchill primarily because of the need for a morale boost at home. They needed a hard charger in there who would give them some good press. Unfortunately the guy he chose (forget name - help me out here grogs) was killed when his plane was shot down while delivering him. So, Monty, which the documentary said was in many was similar to Gen. Auk got his shot. I would suggest that Monty was well liked by his troops due to his comprehensive focus on training. I know that from my experience in the army if you do a lot of training for some task it makes you feel a lot more comfortable about the upcoming task (like battle), whether ot not you are truly equipped to win. Now another question. If McLellan is considered to suck by historians, how come there is a base (Fort McLellan, AL) named after him? One of those name all the forts in the south after northern generals things? Thanks for all of the very knowledgeable posts on this thread. I thought the question on "who's the best" was a bit frivolous, but it has generated a good discussion, which is what I was really after anyway. ------------------ desert rat wannabe [This message has been edited by Goanna (edited 01-12-2000).]
2. I'd have to agree with Berli, since he basically just finished giving me a lesson yesterday on this very subject. I charge in pretty close with the Tiger (near wheat field, or near building in left centre) when I am playing the AI. But when playing against a human, I will tend to stand off.
3. . . . and don't forget that >75% of all people are above average drivers in a recent survey.
4. OK Faller, I just want to state right now for the record that when I called you a cruel, heartless, maniacal, teasing bastard on that other thread I meant it in the best of possible ways. You only have to worry when a grunt stops bitching. ------------------ desert rat wannabe
5. Rock on Colin, your site looks good so far ------------------ desert rat wannabe
6. I'd have to go with the Germans in most situations because you can never rule them out the schreck teams seem more effective than the zooks and the infantry carries fausts. Lets be honest here folks, if you were really saving private Ryan, you'd rather be ambushing with the Germans. And I am absolutely sure I am going to find driving a jagdpanther exhilerating. ------------------ desert rat wannabe
7. Cuz you're a lucky swine, Berli. His trick must have made it go random somehow, because they did show up on 11 and I was hoping they would wait until 14. Rats. ------------------ desert rat wannabe
8. Oh, Madmatt you teasin' bastard. What's a guy gotta do to be you? ------------------ desert rat wannabe
9. Well, I'm pretty offensive. I think I have offended Berlichingen and Beman on an occassion or two, so I'll give you my 2 bits. Once again, I feel that some of my brethren just haven't experienced the thrill of using these beauties fully. I have been able to decimate the Sherman forces on several occasions, typically when the StuGs are in ambush, but even after I have been spotted and engaged. The key is not yourself, but your environment. I invite either of you to CE for an experiment. BTW, can someone in grogland tell me out of curiosity what the StuG overall kill rate in the war was vs. an M4? ------------------ desert rat wannabe [This message has been edited by Goanna (edited 01-09-2000).]
10.
quote:
One nice thing about being in Ireland is that sometimes we get to see some of the Highland regiments doing military tattoos etc.

. . . not to mention the close proximity to dark-haired lasses and fresh Guiness
11. Hi dee ho neglectirinos. I must say I am truly touched by the sense of being missed by my comrades in America and Europe. The Australian infantry hasn't been more popular since the Brits ran out of fodder in Gallipoli. Well, after completing my list of domestic duties and paying a bit of attention to my motorcycle over the weekend, I am back and ready to deal a bit of deserved death (to Berli & Mikester) and finish having my ass handed to me (Knaust). I can't even remember who was driving with you Doug, so you'll have to fill me in. I really feel bad I wasn't online over the weekend given the run of luck Bauhaus was in. I definitely would have jumped on that bandwagon and put the boot in.
12. Yeah, you're all for it Captain. Until it starts to go pear shaped that is. If anyone wants to see a good movie of the Captain "kicking ass", please e-mail me and I wil send you an Academy Award winner. My advice when playing the Captain is to have some rules. #1 FOW will stay on all game for both players #2 Players will not quit the game without surrendering or requesting a cease fire. #3 Players will under no circumstances attempt to back up and play turns which didn't turn out in their favour over again. These typically seem like common sense, but they obviously dropped that from the Brooklyn public schools curriculum. ------------------ desert rat wannabe
13. I'd suggest you take this up with Scott Kevill on his GameRanger site. I imagine that he will support CM when it comes out, but probably not the Beta Demo
14. I'm with Berli. I recommend everyone who is having trouble with their PC/Window XX configurations get on ebay and buy a 1995 PowerComputing Mac clone like I have that runs the latest Mac OS and CM like a wet dream. You can probably pick one of these up for less than the price of a Voodoo card.
15. CDIC, or just give us your postal address in China and someone can probably send it to you on a Zip Disk or burn you a CD. ------------------ desert rat wannabe
16. I just watched a biography of Bernhard Montgomery last night and it claimed that he was the best combat commander (I assume this means fighting in the field with his troops) in the entire second world war by a number of those interviewed. I found this a bit hard to take. My impression is that Rommel was probably the best due to his intuition and innovation (wasn't he the guy that first dug in the 88) plus the fact that he led from the front. He was unduone in N. Africa due to the lack of resupply. I would like to get the opinions of those in the know here (especially the grogs) on their vote for best commander, and the justification. Am I treating Monty unfairly just because he is a pom? ------------------ desert rat wannabe [This message has been edited by Goanna (edited 01-04-2000).]
17. Captain, you are a hoot man. I especially love the fact that you even misspelled your own name.
18.
quote:
Although it's definitely "gamey," I'm getting the impression that you should set up a defense by splitting all your squads and placing them around to maximize the number of foxholes in the area you're defending.

Actully MOS, I don't even think that this is all that "gamey" since when I was in the army we always spent time building primary and secondary fighting positions based on where we thought an attack would come from. you've given me a new way to survive in Last Defence. ------------------ desert rat wannabe
19. Ok, not to expose myself as too much of a pinhead, Steve, but can you or Berli explain what all those units in his list are. You mean to tell me that the Germans used a bunch of angry Samoans against the Allies in Normandy? ------------------ desert rat wannabe
20. Doug has hit the nail on the head. If you think the Germans are outnumbered in that game, I would gladly take them anytime over the yanks in that scenario. The key, as you said, was caution. You were too cautious. Don't discount the huge psychological advantage of racing up a bit with the Tiger. I have seen the US forces run like rabbits (under the AI) if you hit them fast and hard. A good human player can trap you however, so you can't be reckless. ------------------ desert rat wannabe
21. Yes Captain you did manage to knock out all my StuGs, but you forget that this is primarily an infantry game. I would call a 75% victory for the Germans a pretty good showing, wouldn't you Knaust? ------------------ desert rat wannabe
22.
quote:
If he played with FOW off and you had it on then IMO he had a decisive advantage since FOW would NOT be off for you.

...and I still hammered him. That'll show you what some of those "German Coffins" can do. Go lay by your dish, Captain. ------------------ desert rat wannabe [This message has been edited by Goanna (edited 12-31-99).]
23. Captain, I think perhaps you should to a bit more reading before you go popping off with comments about Vietnam, or perhpas talk to some veterans of that war. David Hackworth, who wrote a very good book on his experiences "About Face" would tell you that the fighting, even in "small skirmishes" was very tactical in Vietnam, but the overall strategy of the war was not very coherent. I would suggest that BTS, or someone else, could adapt their engine to mast any war, as Doug Beman suggests, but they have chosen to start with WWII becuse they have a historic interest. I didn't fight in Vietnam, so I am not going to make any definitive statements about it, as you seem ready to do at the ripe age of 16. I would shy away from these if I were you so as not to risk offending actual veterans that are more than likely represented on this BBS. ------------------ desert rat wannabe
24. I agree with the purists and just assume that FOW was always used when playing against a human. Fionn, can you clarify for me that if the Captain has FOW turned off and I made no settings changes, being the oblivious dumb Australian that I am, that FOW was off for both of us the whole game? In any case, I don't think it made too much difference in my game with the Captain, he got on the wrong end of being too aggressive with lighter armed US troops. But, that game ain't finished yet. I am sure Berlichingen is going to jump in here (on me) soon, so I will state for the record right now that I got the short end of the too agressive stick playing him. Ouch, that's gonna leave a mark! ------------------ desert rat wannabe [This message has been edited by Goanna (edited 12-30-99).] [This message has been edited by Goanna (edited 12-30-99).] [This message has been edited by Goanna (edited 12-30-99).]
25. I can't get my browser to locate the CMHQ server either to check out the update or look at Fionn's pics for the Meta-Campaign. Is there some problem at that end, or am I being routed from this end of the earth through one of your DOD facilities being shut down for Y2K? Sure hope e-mail still works to that side of the world, or I am gonna have to do some work. Boo hoo.
