Since most of the current CMT battles are much shorter, the artillery calling times had to be shortened as well, or you would never get arty. You can rationalize this if you like as the game basically assuming prepared barrages on stand-by (aka target points).

In lieu? You are jumping to conclusions.

Most people vastly underestimate what is going on under the hood in CM, and how different it is from what happens in the typical FPS or RTS. CM is a simulation, using physics and algorithms to simulate outcomes on a vast battlefield, all going on at the same time. You can't fudge this like you can in most FPS or RTS, which simplify anything that isn't in your immediate view usually. That makes for some great graphics and gives the impression of bigger distances and events than what is really going on. CM doesn't have that luxury, not unless we begin watering down the sim aspect of the game (and we don't want that).
And once you grasp that, then the second thing most people forget is that as you increase your calculations and fidelity in a 3 dimensional space, the requirements do not simply double with the distance, but increase exponentially (in fact, they increase even more since we're taking into account different elevations, too)
CMTouch is somewhat simplified from CMBN in the simulation department, but not as much as you may think. It is still a true war simulation, not just an RTS clickfest, and tracks ballistics and other algorithms.
If anything it is amazing that Clay and team managed to get this to run on the iPads at all (and I know that they had to combat a lot of OOM errors in the process).

Optional!!! I like the current version without floating icons.
And maybe it's just my problem, but very hard to unselect a unit when I start to add waypoints, but I changed my mind and I want they where they are... then I undow the waypoints, but after the last one, the selected unit cannot be unselected, because always want me to tap for the waypont. It could be great some nice unselect option.
Right now the way to do this is to place a waypoint (anywhere, really) and then immediately click on the STOP button. A little bit of a clutch and perhaps not immediately clear, but it works well and with just one extra tap over an Undo button (which would have added clutter to the interface).

Either it stands on its own with fun and engaging gameplay or it doesn't.
True. But you said yourself, you went in with expectations different than that.

So what's the roadmap for CM:T improvements? Harv listed several concerns - and there's a thread going on Touch Arcade and other pros & cons. I think we'd all be interested in learning what the future may hold.
Also, out of curiosity, the new iPad seems to have some reasonable horsepower in it. What is the limiting factor for a game like CM:T (and CMBN for that matter)?
Thanks!

I will let Clay respond to that as I don't know the technical details. What I do know is that 1.1 which is in the works will provide some performance improvements, some multiplayer changes. Maybe some other stuff, not sure. Clay should be posting more info about this later tonight or tomorrow.
The only firm roadmap we have is that, just like the desktop series, CMTouch will be expanded and improved over time. We're in this for the long haul, as usual.

As the old saying goes...expectation leads to disappointment, and I was hoping for/expecting CMx1 in all it's fantastic gameplay glory, and all I received was a neutered CMx2 something instead.
That's probably the problem right there. Now if those expectations are realistic, compared to what else is out there, is another question

Thanks for your feedback, Harv. It's going to take several more new iPads by Apple before we will be able to play a copy of CMBN in it. We're pushing the envelope with CMTouch as is (and will keep pushing with future updates).
You are listing quite a few important Pro's in your post for not having liked it "at all"...

Just a quick headsup that it looks like Combat Mission Touch topped the charts at #1 for the sim and strategy game categories in the AppStore already after a few hours today. And it's steadily climbing up the top 100 chart of ALL AppSales, currently at rank 67 outselling Call of Duty Black Ops (#69)
We'll post an official tally-up of the rank for the release day tomorrow once we get all the numbers in from the different countries.
Thank you in advance for the support! Clay will post some news about the first planned (free) v1.1 update tonight or tomorrow.

Yeah, Campaigns are planned for future in-app purchases.
Make sure to post reviews/ratings in the AppStore/iTunes. The more reviews and ratings we get, the higher the chance for the app to be picked up and featured by Apple! Once that happens, I promise everyone who voted a free scenario pack!

Personally, I think it's a decent introduction. The UI is simpler, the scenarios smaller, which means that you can repeat them fairly quickly to "master" some basic tactics. Don't expect to win right away (I lost my first couple of battles), but you can rinse/repeat quickly.
There are some differences with CMBN though which means that your experience with CMTouch won't be directly translatable, though.

Doubleclick on the HQ unit(s). This will highlight/select all subordinate units automatically and you can move them out of the way and get a rough organization going, which you can then later finetune.

Moved to the GF and commercial link deleted. The YouTube video had a Buy Now link right under the video in the comments section, this violates our "no commercial links" policy.
-
The underlying engines are different, so in short, tha answer is no. Which doesn't mean that the FX in CMBN won't be updated sooner or later, however.

You should seriously consider it. The difference between iPad 1 and 2 is huge (unlike arguably the difference between 2 and 3).
If you trade in your iPad 1, you probably won't have to spend more than $100-$200 out of pocket for 2.

All you gotta do is check Clay's previous posts here

No problem in discussing but we do not, allow commercial links. I removed them from your post.

Ipadwargamer.com is a great URL! Feel free to add it to our weblinks section on the main site!

Gamecenter is integrated.

Yep, the iPad 2 is a great platform and powerful compared to earlier tablets, but we are quite a ways away from being able to play CMBN on it. Make no mistake though, CMTouch is pushing the envelope of what you can get as an app these days. It offers 4sqkm maps for example. This isn't just some spitting-range RTS!
No editors. 7 missions included in the app. It is all in the announcement.
Not sure yet what scenario packs will cost, we'll see. But certainly less than the full game, so 0.99 or 1.99 is much more likely than 4.99

Yes solo play is enabled.
CMTouch is not CMBN for the iPad. But it comes close, and when you know the desktop versions, you will feel right at home. Truth is that the iPad cannot quite handle the full game. Heck, some desktops cannot handle it.

Tell me there are bigger things on the near horizon involving the regular game.
