Badger must be the ticket that I got on the Help Desk. I have only gotten one. My initial suggestion was to check with Steam since it works on the Battlefront version but not the Steam version. I was actually hopeful that they already knew about the issue and had a fix. They directed him back to me.

There are people that are running it with no problem on Windows 11. It's possible that it is a different issue that has nothing to do with Windows 11 and others without Windows 11 are experiencing it too. My daughter has been playing it on Windows 11 without a problem. So, it isn't a problem that affects all Windows 11 users.

The Battlefront v1.02 patch will be out very soon (yes, I said very). An hour or so ago I left it with him that we'd see if the Battlefront version still runs once the v1.02 patch is installed. So, that's where it's at right now. 1 ticket and we're trying to figure it out.

I should have posted an update after Thanksgiving.  I think a Win11 update fixed this back then.  The Steam version of this game now works for me on Win11 since early December.

  2. You should be okay.  I updated to Win11 on a recently acquired gaming desktop which I had previously installed CMBN, CMFI, CMFB, and CMCW when it was still a Windows 10 PC.  All those titles seems to play fine on Win11.

However, I am unable to run Combat Mission Cold War using Steam on this Windows 11 PC.

I originally purchased CMCW from Battlefront.  Last week I was able to successfully obtain my Slitherine Steam Key, add this game to my Steam library, and download the game from Steam.  Yet when I try to start the game from Steam on a Win11 OS PC, the game fails to run.   When I press "play" in the Slitherine game window, the Windows little circle shows up for a moment and then goes away.  I've restarted my PC and changed the Steam Library CMCW executable on my PC to Win8 compatibility without success.

So, I have no problems playing the Battlefront versions on Win11 but I am unable to play the Steam version of CMCW.  Support tickets are logged.  Go figure . . .

Gosh, Dave, I should remember that but can't.  I only recall that Chernobyl was in 1989 and a lot of dynamics changed after that.  What was the 1988 incident you reference?

    1986, actually.

Duh, I should know that!  :o  1989 was when the Berlin Wall came down . . .

An accidental war was completely possible though. We almost had one in 1988 but saner heads prevailed, or at least made everyone pause enough to reevaluate what was going on.

Does it improve zeroing to align these points in a straight line or relatively straight line.  I mean in real life, it seems aiming in a single dimension is an easier problem than two dimensions.

Thoughts and/or experience (virtual or real)?

    Thanks.

During WW2 (the time period of your question) at the line company/platoon level, aligning the FO along the same directional line as the guns was the preferred option.

The techniques WW2 Forward Observers used to adjust fires, Fire Direction Centers used for re-calculations, and crew drill traversing the guns were not as good as those used today (even without computerized FDC's).  I don't know how the WW2 CM games might handle it as opposed to those historical experiences.

I think the reason they didn't was not that shells could not blow up bocage, but that it would be inefficient and unreliable. Artillery did not have the needed accuracy and you'd need a direct hit.

Yes, those would all be "Danger Close" fire missions with extremely limited visibility to adjust rounds.  There was enough grousing about Friendly Fire casualties, warranted or not, as it was.

After 1942 that was certainly true. But following the KMT Left-Right split of 1927, General von Falkenhausen stepped into the shoes of the Soviets as the KMT's key military adviser, and reorganized their forces on German lines. That of course ended after 1937 when the Germans chose the invading Japanese as their preferred partner in East Asia.

But while it's plausible that some German kit, including helmets, remained in use by 1945, yes, I'd expect frontline formations to have US gear. Like this! (NOT a war movie, though one of the finest Chinese films I have ever seen, and highly recommended.  Minute 27:30)

Thank you for the correction.  I did not know this pre-1942 history behind the KMT/PLA conflicts.  I think of the KMT in WW2 anti-Japanese USA alliance terms.  I forget the deeper history before then.  👍

Now, that's interesting that the Chinese Nationalists had German helmets.  Have no idea what weapons they used.  <snipped>

That picture is nonsense.  The Chinese Nationalists (aka Kuomintang) were US equipped.  Helmets were GI steel pots.  Arms were M1 Garand, BAR, Thompson smg, and such.

It's the Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) which wore soft caps and used bolt-action rifles (German stocks from old Imperial arsenals and US Springfields left over from US WW2 lend-lease).  In the 1950's the PLA adopted Soviet style equipment, especially in Korea.

  9. WW2 units tended to be racially (USA) and ethnically (European territories) segregated although there are exceptions.  Here are faces at The CM Mod Warehouse which someone can mix and match from other CM titles for a more integrated look (depending how CMCW labels those files).

I also have Aris's mods for African-American-Faces-CMBN, Asian-Faces1-CMFI, and Asian-Faces2-CMFI which are too big to post here but I can email to someone who wants to host on a file share URL.

Yo, @Mord - what are the URL's where I can find your FOG2 mods?  I'd like to check them out.  Thanks.  👍

    THE TRADITIONAL WAY:

    1. Visit Hexed.it (A website)

    2. Click   "Open file" on the top.

    3. Navigate to your CM maps in the window that opens up. (Typically CM will install the program in Program files (x86) -> Battlefront -> Combat Mission-> CMBS. Maps are typically installed to (Documents -> Battlefront -> Combat Mission -> CMBS -> Game Files)

    4. Select the map you wish to convert and open in Hex editor.

    4.png

    5. There is one byte (One of the boxes with 00 in it) that needs to be changed. Each game has a different number to symbolize what game the map belongs to. "0A" is for CMBS. 0C is CMFB. 04 is CMBN. 06 is CMFI. 12 is CMCW. 00 is CMSF2. We are transferring this CMBS file to CMCW. So replace the 0A by typing 12.

    5.png

    6. Click export at the top after changing the number. The file is now a CMCW file with the change of the single byte "0A" to "12".

    7. The file should export to your downloads folder (Check to see where the file actually goes.. you can double check by clicking export again.. as it will ask you where to place the file.. then you can see where it goes.).

Move the file from your downloads to the appropriate folder.

For instance: We converted a CMBS QB map. So it will be placed in the appropriate CMCW QB map folder.

EXTRA: You can add subfolders to the QB maps folder for particular titles, for organization purposes. You can explore these subfolders in the editor, so it's cool. They organize your folder so it looks pretty. Just remember to save the file (When you have it open in the editor) and place it out of the subfolder, so when you click Battle or Quick Battle on the main game screen, the maps will actually show. Of course you can always find them in the editor just fine. But the main game won't pick up the files unless they are directly in Documents -> CMCW -> QB maps.

They won't show if you have them in a subfolder such as Documents -> CMCW -> QB maps -> Conversions

THE NEW WAY: FOR STUBBORN FILES

    THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THIS:

    F-R.png

    ALSO:

Check out this thread I made a while back for converting maps. This was the original thread.

    THANK YOU!  👍

I have made the maps public before, and I was the only person to do this.

I felt really bad about it in hindsight.

If BFC gives me the OK I don't mind publishing everything I have converted, and everything I will convert.

I won't publish anything CMF&R. This I will probably leave to you guys. Unless given a thumbs up.

Consider posting such maps at The Scenario Depot which is hosted by The Few Good Men.  The will be well appreciated there.

THANKS TO @Kevin2k'S FIX I DONT HAVE TO REPLACE A SINGLE BUILDING. THE WHOLE MODULE TRANSFERS OVER BY HIS SOLUTION. WHICH BY THE WAY, IS CHANGING 2 BYTES AND REMOVING 1.

BERLIN, IN CMCW, JUST ABOUT 0 EFFORT REQUIRED

THE SMOOTHEST ENGINE RUNNING THE MOST DEMANDING MAP

THIS IS HUGE. I CANT EMPHASIZE THIS ENOUGH

I AM AGAIN AN OVERLY HAPPY CUSTOMER. THANKS TO THE COMMUNITY THOUGH

    @Kevin2k@Kevin2k@Kevin2k

    ^^^^^^THANK THAT GUY ^^^^^^

I would really like to understand how to import maps from one title to another.  I've never tried because I didn't think it was possible.  Would you mind explaining in detail the step-by-step procedure for doing this?  Thank you.

The serial number they are referring to is your Battlefront activation key. When you enter your Battlefront key in that field it will generate a Steam key. And that is what you use to get the Steam version.

However, DO NOT do this now. They are not yet fully set up for it. When they announce that Cold War is available on Steam is when you should use your Battlefront key to get your Steam key. I have no idea what happens if you try it now. It probably just gives a message saying invalid key or somefink....Whatever it does I would recommend staying away from it until it's ready.

    Understood.  Thank you.

Currently, you just get an "Invalid Serial Number" message.  No other harm donel

  14. 10 hours ago, BFCElvis said:

Yes. A Battlefront purchase will also get you Steam access at no additional charge. Heck, I've already sent them the Battlefront keys to make this happen.

Question about that; it appears that Slitherine has already reserved a slot for CMCW on it's game registration drop down for their User Account page.  Battlefront provides a game "Activation Code" but to register a game with Slitherine requires a "Serial Number" and to activate a game on Steam requires a "Steam Key".   We get our Battlefront activation code from our Battlefront Store login page; it shows up on "My Orders" in our completed orders.  Who/where will Serial Number and Steam Keys be provided?

    Thanks!

Personally I have mine on C:\Games\ (outside of the Program Files directory).

I have mine on my "D" drive instead because the "D" partition has much more free space for games than my "C" drive.  It works out very well for me.

Just change the "C" to "D" (or whatever else you prefer) when running the game install program.
