OS 10.2.4 Support for CMBO?

Recommended Posts

If I understand the problem correctly the problem with making CMBO work on OS 10 is that there is insufficient support for Classic RAVE. According to Apple's KBase document 106963 OS 10.2.4 does contain Classic RAVE 1.8. Why then does CMBO still not work? Anyone care to enlighten me?

Unfortunately, my new PowerBook cannot boot into Classic so I can't use that workaround.

Thanks in advance.

CMBO should work in Classic with software rendering, which means your maximum resolution will be 640x480 and your textures will be downsampled heavily. So the game's performance isn't going to be that great unless you got a fairly fast CPU.

I believe that you need to remove the 'Classic RAVE' extension to actually run CMBO however (I can't accurately recall the exact details right now) and boot into Classic. OS X will replace the extension on the next boot, so you'll need to repeat this process often.

Apple's numbering of the RAVE extension unfortunately doesn't guarantee that it is fully backwards compatible with all RAVE calls. The previous RAVE extension under OS 9.x supports more RAVE calls properly than the 'Classic RAVE' extension that is part of Classic. Either that or Apple just plain flat-out broke RAVE and can't code it correctly anymore.

As perhaps expected, 10.2.5 doesn't change anything.

I tried both CMBB Demo and CMBO Demo (to avoid having to load the CD), and both of them went to the "Loading 3D Graphics..." screens, but didn't leave them when the background music started. In CMBB the text was not visible, appearing only as white boxes.

Oh well.
