  1. I guess it's a good thing the British spent so much time and material building those tin cans called cruisers. Working up close enough with infantry sounds like a good idea but in the open desert with a halfway decent opponent is well-nigh impossible. Does anyone else think that these monsters are overprotected by the game engine? I know the Italians could never stop them and the Germans certainly respected them but they were not invincible - especially once the 50mm gun was available on the PKW III and as an anti-tank gun. I don't remember any instances were they were absolutely unstoppable in the Western Desert after 1940 (Italians). Of course, German doctrine was to knock out any enemy tanks with anti-tank guns (usually 88s) and only use their precious tanks to mop up what was left. Maybe this is another one of those instances where the scale of the game betrays the gameplay. If the Germans encountered Matildas with only PKW IIIs they probably would have withdrawn. The tanks were more valuable than any fixed point in the desert could have been. When it really mattered, like around Tobruk or in Hellfire Pass, the Germans would always scare up some 88s to take care of the threat. Something to ponder. Maybe the solution is to up the rarity on Matildas since 3 or 4 in a 500 pt. Quickbattle can create a very unbalanced scenario. In the Quickbattle I mentioned in my first post, I feel like I did everything right. Once I saw there were Matildas roaming the battlefield, I hid all of my Panzers and made sure that the Matildas would have to close to less than 100m to get a visual on any of my tanks. I had one adventuresome Matilda try to flank my position and he took out 3 out of 4 of my IIIs (the other was holed on a beserker suicide charge - what can you do with Green troops?) One of my PKW III (my lone H) was even taken out hiding between two buildings which should have increased his protection a lot (there was barely enough room to poke his gun through at the Matilda). All of this damage was done by only 1 Matilda and the Brits had two more that just stood off and machine-gunned my infantry. BTW, does anyone know how to get more than Green troops in a 500 pt. Quickbattle? Having only rookies is a pain in the butt when it comes to fighting real beasts like the Matilda. It doesn't help when they miss 50% of the time. My two cents. TH
  2. How do you kill Matildas if you don't have an 88? According to Tank Combat in North Africa (a cited reference on the CMAK references page), the Germans determined that you can kill a Matilda if you hit it right at 200m with PKW III with a 50mm gun (F and above). I just had 4 IIIs whacked without making a dent in a Matilda in a Quick Battle set in August 41. I wasn't able to kill a Matilda at 100m - much less 200. You just can't get 88s in a 500 pt game. Any suggestions? TH
  3. I have just started playing around with CMAK. I was wondering if anyone noticed whether or not there was any facility for using captured vehicles. This was quite common in the Desert War - particularly by the Germans. Rommel's favorite command vehicle was British-made and the Germans were known to press Matilda's and Crusader's into service in 1941-42. I figure some of the bizarre custom jobs that the Afrika Korps did are probably beyond the pale. For instance, I have seen photographs of a 150mm infantry gun mounted on a PKW III chassis. Conversions like this were also common in the Afrika Korps which was always salvaging damaged equipment and making something useful out of it (they got so little from Germany). Anybody seen any provisions for either of these equipment circumstances? Tom Haymes
  4. There don't seem to be any Voodoo3 drivers out there that work. One set crashes the computer hard and the other causes the weird graphics problem. I have a line on an ATI Radeon 7000 with 32 MB which I will be getting this weekend - I hope that will work better. Thanks for all of the help. TH
  5. I am using the 1.1.3 beta drivers and I have updated the ROM to Voodoo3 3000 status (according to Apple system profiler). I have never been able to use CMBO on this particular system. My problem comes from the fact that I recently upgraded my Powerbook G3/333 to a Powerbook G4 12" which only boots into OS X - and doesn't run CMBO as a result. In order to be able to play the game I have transferred it over to my G3/233 beige minitower which is still running OS 9.2.2 but then I discovered that a RAVE 128 with 6 MB of VRAM won't run the program either. So, to make a long story short, I picked up at cheap Voodoo3 card (the ATI's were MUCH more expensive) to see if I could make it run with that. I haven't been able to make the game run with anything other than the drivers I currently have installed. I had the Voodoo3 2000 drivers but that caused a hard crash (white box - usually a bus error) every time I launched the game. At least now it doesn't crash but it does have a serious display problem. Everything is real big and the screen essentially bleeds off the edge of the display. For example, I can only see the very top of the info box at the bottom of the CMBO screen. I have tried the game set at 1024X768 (the resolution I used on the old PowerBook) and at 1280X1024 (the optimum resolution for my 17 LCD). Neither setting made any difference. I'll see if I can find older drivers at the links you suggested. Thanks everyone for the input and I'll let you guys know how it goes. TH
  6. I tried deleting the ATI extensions and that didn't solve the problem. Going back to 8.6 is not really an option because I use this computer as a server for my OS X systems and that requires IP networking. 8.6 doesn't have that - 9 does. Anyone else got any ideas? I tried taking a screenshot of the symptom but it came out garbage (an interesting phenomenon). Thanks, Tom
  7. OK, now I have a Voodoo3 card in my beige G3/233 but I am still having video problems. I am getting the screen at a very low resolution (looks like blown up 800X600) and I can't see any of the information at the bottom of the screen. I have tried toggling the resolution and but that only seems to be making it worse. I have tried it at 1280X1024 and 1024X768. I am using the Voodoo3 3000 drivers for the Mac. Any ideas how I can fix this? I am running CMBO with the latest patch and no special mods. Thanks, TH
  8. BTW, as far as joining the darkside is concerned maybe when they can make a laptop like my 12" Powerbook with internal DVD-burner (4.6 lbs.) - then I'll consider it. The mere fact that I still use as my server/desktop unit a computer (my beige G3/233 minitower) that was built in January 1998 also says something. What kind of PC is that vintage and is still usable? I think we are talking Pentium 200 or so? I have a Pentium 2/450 HP Kayak that is a year newer that is collecting dust because I haven't been able to find use for it since my wife gave up Autocad. I'm not even going to mention the 7100/66 that served me well for 8 years until I retired it a couple of months ago in favor of a wireless hub (I guess I just did). I guess it depends on how you like your bread buttered. TH
  9. Has anyone tried a 3dfx Voodoo3? I found one used for $39 with 16 MB onboard. $39 - sound like a good deal? Thanks, TH
  10. Thanks for all of the good advice. I am currently prowling the bargain bins for a used or clearance ATI card with 16 MB on it. I hppe that will get me through CMAK which is what I really want to make sure of. The gol is to make all of this work long enough for the guys here at Battlefront to come out witht the OS X compatible game. Thanks again. Tom Haymes haymest@globalsynergies.com
  11. I have 6 MB of VRAM on this computer and I think it is a RAVE 128 as card. Any suggestions on a cheap video card to remedy this problem? Thanks, Tom
  12. OK, I've given up on trying to run on OS X on my 12" Powerbook and installed the software on my 1998 vintage G3/233 Beige Minitower. It has 354 MB of RAM and is running OS 9.2.2 - the same OS I successfully ran CMBO on on my G3/333 Powerbook for about a year. Here is the problem. I get the game to load, choose a scenario, go through the briefing stuff and see the "Loading 3-D Graphics" screen but then when the actual game screen loads, the program quits. I don't get a "quit unexpectedly" error either. I have now done a clean install of the OS thinking something was wonky there and the symptom persists. Any ideas what is going on? Do I need to run out and buy a new graphics card? I am using the onboard graphics card (RAVE 128, I believe). I love this game and it has been torture not being able to play it the last couple of months. Thanks, Tom Haymes haymest@globalsynergies.com
  13. I guess I'll just have to run it on my G3/233 beige box - it sucks that it isn't portable anymore - it was a great time suck on the plane. Thanks for advice all. TH PS: You can't boot into 9 anymore with the PB 12 and 17 that just came out. TH
  14. If I understand the problem correctly the problem with making CMBO work on OS 10 is that there is insufficient support for Classic RAVE. According to Apple's KBase document 106963 OS 10.2.4 does contain Classic RAVE 1.8. Why then does CMBO still not work? Anyone care to enlighten me? Unfortunately, my new PowerBook cannot boot into Classic so I can't use that workaround. Thanks in advance. Tom Haymes
