Alpha Channel Hell

Recommended Posts

Ok this problem is sending me bald. I just cannot fathom why this happens.

I am trying to make an alpha channel / texture bmp file to modify the brit infantry uniform. I hate the way their coats/shirts poke out the bottom of their armour like a mini skirt. I want to shorten it to match it up with what I have seen in pictures of Afghanistan/Iraq etc. have a look at our chap here:

I have scraped the forums for an answer to this problem. Try as I might I cannot get an alpha to work properly. The bizarre thing is I KNOW they do work on infantry skins because I have used an alpha channel texture to test it out - the green camo net texture that came with the utility vehicles by Birdstrike. Check it out:

So taking the 'skirt' off the bottom of the inf shirts should be do-able, but no matter what I do I cannot get the alpha channels to work. I have tried to modify the camo net file but as soon as the alpha channel is adjusted in any way (such as resize or edited with paintbrush) it no longer works in cmsf. I cannot figure out what is different from the alpha channel in Birdstrikes camo net file and one that I create. Either the entire mesh disappears (when saved in 32bit mode) or nothing happens at all (no transparency that is - in 24bit mode).

Why does it work for one texture file and not any other? Im using cs5 and have tried cs4 in case it is doing something to the file but I cannot put my finger on it.

Can anyone help me?

Cheers

Alpha channels are tricky. Make sure the mask is 100% black and sharp-edged. The least amount of 'fuzziness' or grey on the channel is liable to turn the rest of the art funky see-thru. I had exactly this same conversation a month ago about CM:BN truck windows. :)

Cheers guys I'll give it another whirl when I get back home. I'm thinking maybe photoshop is saving the alphas to an inferior quality and introducing noise around the edges to the white/black divisions in the compression process. Whatever it is its a bloody mystery!

ps. If I crack it then some zombie skins of some sort will definitely have to be designed!

YESSS!!!

Finally got an alpha to work. I hunted around in PS to see if there was anything that could be introducing blurring to the edges and noticed anti-aliasing was turned on. I turned it off and pulled the contrast ratio on the alpha channel to max just in case and it worked! It seems for model textures CM has a brutally low tolerance. Thanks MickeyD... now to get modding :D
