Infantry riding on BMPs?

Recommended Posts

Why did that not make into the game? Is it because of engine limitations?

I know that riding on top of BMPs is not something you would do when entering battle enviroment but Soviet army is well known for this and they still ride on top of their BMPs even today.

There are scenarios in the game where you are supposed to escort a convoy and in all footage I have seen from Afghanistan Soviet soldiers were escorting the convoy riding on top of their BMPs. Apparently it was better to be on top then inside in case you were attacked you could quickly jump off and use terrain as cover.

Would love to see this in the game. As a commander you could choose to have them inside or on top for faster ground deployement. It would also increase spotting of BMPs when driving around.

Agree that this is an extremely common practice, although I haven't seen them do it on BTRs -- maybe because of the high profile and hull shape.

I distinctly remember the CNN footage from the 1991 coup against Gorby where the VDV paras were riding back to base atop their BMDs and flipping the bird to the Western cameras. Also ISTR when the VDV "peacekeepers" unexpectedly seized the airport in Kosovo they rode in atop their BMDs.

BigDuke6 would know for sure from firsthand experience (and probably have pix to prove it), but I haven't seen him post in the CMSF boards in quite some time. Interesting, since I'd think the Afgantsy game would be right up his street. That annoying RL again...

The practice of riding on top of the BTRs was/is just as common as riding on BMPs. In fact, the VDV paras in Pristina that you are referring to were riding on top (and inside) of the BTR-80s and not BMDs.

Ah, my memory is faulty.

BigDuke6 is an American expat photojournalist who lives in, I believe, the Ukraine. He's served in the US military, is very well educated in history and has a lot of contacts in the FSU militaries -- at least, he seems to have pretty good access. I greatly enjoy his perspectives although he goes in for a lot of Yank-bashing -- always a hazard when you hang out with smug Euro intellectuals. Any more than that, you'll need to ask him.
