AI using airstrikes?

In all the many hours I've played this game I've yet to see the AI conduct a single airstrike or use a fighter in defence. I'm surprised after so many patches this hasn't been addressed, and I'm wondering if it ever will be. This is after playing on all the difficulty settings several times.

Sorry to keep harping but the AI is one of the most important things in a wargame. While it's nice to have extra features like being able to make 3D units, having a proper AI is far more important. Multiplay is nice for those who want it but the majority of wargamers play solo only. This game has so much potential but some basics still don't work properly or we don't know how well they work. Aircraft is one of them. Aircraft carriers is another. Using paratroops is another. Sending injured units back for repair in a timely manner is another. Plus some that I can't think of offhand. Not being able to make new 3D units doesn't matter. But an AI that doesn't function properly is a game breaker. The game came out last November. All that AI stuff should be working properly by now. This is getting very frustrating. I'd like to suggest to Brit, in the nicest way, that he concentrates on getting the different parts of the AI working right before working on other facets of the game.

A few weeks ago, I loaded up a scenario created by one of the players. On the first turn, the AI declared war and launched a massive airstrike on me. I've loaded up the same scenario since then, and he hasn't done an airstrike like that. I think what's going on is this: The AI has some personality attributes and one of them determines how often he likes to use aircraft, but the value tends to be set too low, which causes him not to use aircraft very frequently. This would explain why he uses airstrikes sometimes but not others.

Hi Brit, thanks for the reply. If that is the case it must be set exceedingly low. I've played dozens of hours and not seen a single one, nor any air defence (fighter or AA). I agree with Rich that it would be nice if these core AI functions were your priority if you are planning another update. I've had this game pretty much since it first came out, and I play it for a few hours and then put it away again for a months or more in disappointment with the AI's competitiveness, even at Elite difficulty. I keep coming back to it because there is nothing else like it on the market, but then put it aside again after a couple of games hoping the patches will improve its competitiveness.

I ccould not agree more with this. I have thought about bringing this fact up in the sales and marketing thread, but decided not to. The BEST thing to do for sales is to have the game working properly,....including the AI.

The AI usually bombs the crap out of me once it reaches a certain strength. Maybe You guys have it on the run from the start of the game. Have you tried playing on veteran level with at least three AI opponents?

I've tried it on all difficulty levels many times, and with one, two, three and more opponents. Following up on Brit's comments about AI personality, I almost always play as the US, and my opponents are almost always China and the EU. I wonder if that might be the issue, as perhaps these personalities don't use airpower much.

It's not just airstrikes. It's different facets of the AI although airstrikes is certainly one of the most important. I've been talking about the AI for months and months. He finally got unit production choices working properly but it took a couple of months. I hope airstrikes and other AI concerns might finally get addressed.

I've seen the AI building planes. But if others aren't then maybe unit production choices aren't fixed after all.

The reason the AI doesn't guard transports is it has no ability to do so. There's no escort function programmed. Same with battleships lacking destroyer escorts.

I've certainly seen the AI build and use planes but it's pretty hit and miss as Brit says. Sometimes he doesn't use them at all and then all of sudden he waylays you with them catching you completely off guard. In fact I rarely built planes myself until I got smacked with them.

I will say one thing I've rarely seen though (if ever) is the AI building carriers.

I can only agree. This game has alot of potential, but the AI is letting it down. I keep updating this game and really only give it another go if there has been some form of AI update. The AI need to be able form alliances, accept alliances once you cosy up to them, and alllll of the other tactical actions they should be able to do. I have not been able to get an AI to do this at all yet.

I know this is more difficult than just requesting it - I would agree that all other development should take a backseat to this hugely critical area. The goal in my mind would be a civilization type AI...with roughly configurable AI/Personalities that can engage with the player both tactictly AND strategicly (treaties and trade). This game would be GOLD if this were possible. Sorry to go off topic a bit!
