Steam version compatibility

We put the game out on Steam just now, but the patch and packs you mentioned are 1-2 years old.

Asking the support desk will lead to the same response, as it is me responding there as well :-) The reason why I am going from memory and am too lazy too look it up is because the answer is available to you as well. For example, when you go to the download page for the Uberpatch

http://www.battlefront.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=401&Itemid=65

it says that the patch is not compatible with ANY other game version. This should answer your question. The download pages for the packs should answer your question equally well, and again, as I remember it, they will be the same, i.e. they only work with the original Battlefront version.

Having said that: you won't need the Uberpatch for the Steam version. It's already fully patched.

Actually the Mission Pack will work according to the webpage. To my knowledge it should change the licensing of the game from Steam to eLicense (it also includes the 'uber patch').

The ModPack on the other hand I'm not sure of what its requirements are. I assume it MAY need the uber patch to work properly. Other than that it should work with any of the distributions.

The critical part here is finding the 'uber patch' for the Steam distribution. It is NOT on 1C Publishing's website (the downloads are for all of the other distributions). So I assume you're left with whatever support 1C Publishing can offer. Hopefully they'll offer the 'uber patch' soon.

Oh okay sorry. Can you consider releasing the mission pack through Steam as an add-on DLC for Theatre of War, say for $5? Theatre of War 2 has its Centauro add-on available as DLC.

Thanks for the help! Though that bit about changing the licensing sounds kinda scary, the reason I would buy this through Steam is to avoid the hassle with the e-license stuff. I assume that's some sort of limited activation DRM?

AFAIK ToW version available on Steam already contains the latest patch and mission pack, exisiting mods in theory should work as well. It's recommended to try the demo before purchase to make sure the game works ok on your PC (there are may be compatibility problems with latest video card drivers, esp. AMD ones).

This is strange. I DEFINITELY would have expected the game to be released at the latest patch level (1.10.0.81), but this TOW Support thread mentions that the Steam release of the game is at version 1.2.0.42. I'm not sure why that would be the case or if the user is mistaken in some way. I've since replied to others that the game needs the uber patch, which seems unavailable from the 1C Publishing EU site.

Sneaksie is just speaking of bringing the Steam release to 1.10.0.81, the 'uber patch', which has been released for quite awhile already. I don't think that there are new issues that will be addressed with the patch (unless there is an issue involving the Steam DRM).

Thanks for the info.

TOW on steam was fully updated a few days ago, it even came with the Lehr Campaign and the Belorussian Campaign, Great value, I am well pleased.

Decided to grab ToW #1 (despite having it already) as I think of the price as being for the expansion alone. As you say - good value. Really don't like steam tho. BFC's e-License is far from that bloat-ware. Wonder what will happen to BFCs profit margin with Steam prices tho!!

Did remind me of the first time I played the Polish campaign & didn't know about the event triggers being so picky.

I eventually completed a mission with some smoking wrecks & a couple of soldiers left.

A while later I found that if I had advanced a few more meters I would have got reinforcements.... I'd spent the day trying with only the initial force....:eek:

I am sure they did their deal and get a percentage of the sale price and are glad to be able to move a little more product and get more market exposure.

They might even be considering, long term, getting out of the expensive distribution business, and selling their products only through vendors like Steam etc that are specialised, experienced, focused on and good at that side of the business.

Belorussian campaign is great by the way I am playing it at the moment. Plenty of massed tank action!

Cheers

Alan.

I am looking forward to the extra campaigns once I remember how to play this game! It's a good game on many levels, trigger issues notwithstanding. A little dated compared to the current offerings graphically etc but it's certainly a milestone title in PC wargames for me.

1C managed to capture the spirit of Russian weather with their work I think. Big factor in those real-life campaigns & helps with player immersion.

Conceptually this series is a positive take on the classic Close Combat series which I really enjoyed. (Pity the 3rd incarnation had such bad camera control.)

& as an aside/rant :P

BFC+steam - I really hope not. I dislike having several 3rd parties involved in me simply wanting to play a game.

BFCs off-line elicence ensures I don't have to worry about phone lines or vendor servers whenever I click an icon for solo play. (& thats before we get to dubious power supply companies, poor driver support & buggy OS's etc ;):P )

A flash front-end doesn't (& hasn't) guaranteed performance but it does attract customers. [i wouldn't have used steam if there had been a price-match here.] As it is, I will hazard a small sum on a bargain like this.

Hopefully a 100% reliance on 3rd party vendors will remain unnecessary for BFCs continued revenue & survival.

When CM:N appears I hope its the regular BFC setup that I can trust to be flexible & not nonsense like the last C&C became...! ;)

I could not find any Close Combat games on Steam, did you mean Command and Conquer?(groan that is not a real wargame and belongs in the arcade game genre)

If Battle Front et al wanted an absolute hit game they should forget scripting and simply make a 3D version of Close Combat V and then to enhance it even more a random map and campaign generator as well, like in the Steelpanthers game.

I was referring to Command and Conquer as an example of how to ruin a program which has such an important legacy in RTS -not a wargame per se - but important in the development of wargames as software I think (Dune II was a eureka moment in PC games). Take out the core strategy which made it such a success & blitz it with invasive DRM.

In ref to your 'hit game' suggestion I also mentioned the game like a Close Combat 3d GI Combat Took me a while to recall that name & find that review....! :D - IIRC Atomic games programmers did a 3d version of the first CC & the unwieldy camera pretty much killed it. Did you ever see that? It was quite a while back. Maybe someone needs to do a 'remake' of that with all the necessary fixes & upgrades...

Now were waaaay off-topic...! :P

I have bought and played all the games you mention, as they were released, a real gaming pioneer I am. I quite liked GI Combat but it never took off like I hoped it would and then TOW game along and I have been playing that ever since.
