CelticFrost
So I finish my setup turn and save it to send to the other player. It saves fine, I can see it in the PBEM directory and even try to load it (which I can't because I do not have the Allied password). So I got out to the desktop, navigate to the directory in preparation to attach it to an e-mail and send it only it is not there. The previous few turns are in the PBEM directory but not the new one I just completed and saved. I go back into CMBB and again I *can* see the file and try to load it from within the game. Any ideas? Thanks for any help.
CelticFrost
This is on Vista by the way.
GJK
Switch to using Pbem Helper.
CelticFrost
Blech, Vista takes a bit to get used to. I found the PBEM being saved in some weird directory of Microsoft's creation. I'm guessing it has to do with Run as Admin and all that silliness. Prob solved though .
TheBlackHand
I am having the same exact problem. I have tried PBEM helper, but can't get it to send. I don't know if I'm not setting up the outgoing mail server correctly. Where is the game file stored and how can I play PBEM without the PBEM helper. For that matter, how do I set up the PBEM Helper to send/receive? The instructions are rather vague.
dieseltaylor
Black Hand. I would suggest you use Helper to organise your turns currently and then progress to the sending side. You can attach turns to your normal e-mail messages and helper will clock that. More to the point if you send me your e-mail address I can send you the two different manuals people have written on using it. It is very well worth persevering with. I have played over 200 games using it and introduced 30 plus players to it. Satisfied testimonials are available : ) If you are playing someone you trust the "Fast & Trusted" method allows each e-mail to contain two movies and two moves. This means even long games can be finished inside a month. I would also maintain it is very much more immersive and instructive as you see things in 2 minute blocks rather than perhaps a single film every other day.
TheBlackHand
Thanks, you can send those files to sbringhurst@earthlink.net. I have a spam filter enabled, but I'll look for your file. I havent been able to set up PBEM Helper to send mail. I enter in the same incoming/outgoing mail servers as I use for Outlook express, but it doesn't work. This is a real drag since I havent been able to play any battles for the last couple of months. I really, really hate Vista. It has been nothing but a pain.
ZOR58
dieseltaylor, I am getting ready to PBEM for the first time. Would be interested in the PBEM Helper and Manuals. Please send to dvirobik@comcast.net Thanks, Dan V
dieseltaylor
Use the BF forum mail system its probably as easy. Just mention it here so I know if I have missed it coming : ) The alternative site is where to get the program as I recall Version 1.3.362 (11.9.2004) by Harri Pesonen © 2000-2004 View the latest version of this document (alternative). Download the latest PBEM Helper version (alternative), 2.5 MB. When updating, it is usually enough just to download the executable (alternative), without system files, 460 kB. PS Dan i am having trouble sending currently but it will reach you
TheBlackHand
I got those manuals. Thanks! Unfortunately . . . they didn't help. I still can't find the file to send it in the usual manner and I cannot configure PBEM Helper to send the turn. I followed all of the directions for both methods of sending, but no dice. I get "unspecified errors". I guess I'm just SOL when it comes to playing CM via PBEM with Vista. This is a drag. I HATE VISTA. Vista flippin sucks.
dieseltaylor
PBEMHelper uses .VBS to do all the clever little automated bits. You should check if Vista, or your firewall/virus checker by default stop .VBS running. I could be wrong on this and if you find clicking on a game file in the PBEM list in Helper gets the game opened up then .VBS is working within your computer. Therefore the transmitting out might be the problem as per firewall etc. I am sorry it is a chore however perhaps in the interim just use Helper for tracking games and manually send them. Pressing the F5 key to increment the turn is a little script. : ) However you could manually open your e-mail program and add the file to send. Not ideal but it would index all your games and keep the passwords etc.
dieseltaylor
http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=10303&tag=nl.e539 ZDNET article on why Vista has failed. It also reminded me that there is a rollback facility - not that I know what it does. Makes Vista like XP?
MeatEtr
I'm using a friends laptop with no online ability. So I'm using his Vista laptop for playing the turns and then using a thumb drive to transfer over to a online PC. I tried using the search function but it only finds the incoming PBEMs and not the game generated PBEMs. So where does Vista save the PBEM files?
MeatEtr
Ok I found a very simple solution. Just go to the "Control Panel" and then "User Accounts" and disable the UAC(User Account Control). Once done the PBEM saves like it normally does with no problems. Sure would be nice to get a sticky thread concerning "Common Vista Problems and Solutions" in the CMx1 Tech help forum. This was my first experience with Vista and CMx1 games. Would of been nice to not have to hunt down solutions in the forums. This is the thread that helped me.

solitear
I had the same problem and fixed it at first by going into the game as if I was going to load it but instead right clicking and creating a shortcut on the desktop.....then the desktop shortcut would be available even though I still couldn't find the actual file. after a few turns I decided to set the game so it ran in administrator mode and this seemed to fix it(I am 73 emails into a PBEM) (my theory is that vista wouldn't let the program actually save the file anywhere but this is probably not true since the file was still saved just not visible......) right click the icon then click on preferences and its on one of the tabs(dont remember) but you can set it to always have admin. priviliges.
