MikeyD
abcnews.go.com has a report on that new off-route mine being used in Iraq. News article and download links They provide a link to a PDF copy of the government handout. The new weapon looks like an oversize 'Skeet' self-forging warhead design. Instead of the usual HEAT plasma jet it collapses a steel or copper disk into a big slug that has enough power to put substantial holes in light/medium armor from a considerable distance. The photos in the PDF document are enough to give you the shivers. This ain't no old artillery shells hooked up to a car starter. Frightening. In moments like these that you're reminded we're not 'just' duscussing computer game mechanics here. By the way, 'EFP' acronym stands for Explosive Formed Projectile. Abbott
Yeah I heard about them this morning also. The report I heard said that they believe the technology (training) to build them came from Iran.

Bamse
Old techologie! We had it at platoonlevel in the swedish army. The swedish sexy name translated is "Vehicle mine 13". Don't know the international name for it. /BjörnE
Peter Cairns
The UK uses a french one called an Off-route mine, it uses a thing called a "Misznay Schardin Plate" to form the slug. Don't know much about it, but I am sure if you Google about a bit you'll find it. Peter.
MikeyD
Yeh, not exactly proprietary technology. Military trade pubs have been bragging about 'skeet' EFP muinitions since the mid eighties, and off-route mine technology was coming into its own just before the end of the cold war. It all looks like off-the-shelf stuff cleverly combined. Iraq can boast more engineers per capita than the U.S. Why would they build piece-of-crap 100 pound IEDs when with a bit of thought they can field this nasty little monster?
