Why I think CM:BO is the best

Recommended Posts

I've only just stumbled across the demo of this game, and it's great. I've been looking for a game like this for ages, and I've finally found something that wont disapoint me like those 2d turn based games. I've spent many hours working out tactics etc, and I can't get enough of it.

The real reason I'm posting this is to say why I think it's the best strategy game ever. All other games like this one, are so linear. That is to say, if you have the most firepower, you'll win. 10 guys will beat 5 guys of the same strength. In CM:BO, even the smallest units can take on the biggest, with the right amount of tactics. Rifle squads can take Tanks with a few well placed shots. It's a thinking mans game.

Your probably already knew all this, I just thought I'd share it with you anyway tongue.gif

Welcome and congratulation on finding it in the end! Despite having played it for more than two years now, including the demos, it still hasn't lost any of it's appeal. Quite the opposite actually, it just keeps on getting better smile.gif

Cheers!

M.

Dash it all, would somebody give me a little more detail on this business of taking tanks on with rifles? I wasn't aware it was possible, and given the circumstances of my current game, where my 4 bridge-taking platoons have been overrun by Panzers and most of my PIATs are dead, it would be useful advice indeed.

simple. just take off your socks and put some explosives in them, and coat them with grease. then light the fuse, plant the "sticky bomb" on an unsuspecting tiger and bam! easy as pie!

Cover your approach to the tanks with as much smoke as possible, preferably from a Mortar Spotter...81m or 4.2" or even 105mm. Also button-up the tanks. Then rush your Platoons in close, make sure to keep all squads in command of their HQ unit. Hopefully you have either Panzerfausts, Rifle Grenades, or Demo charges...they will help greatly, but just grenades and ballz of steel can also kill a tank. Platoon's whose HQ has combat and morale bonuses are best for close-assaulting tanks.

I've heard that your squad will be *more* likely to use a 'Faust/Rifle Grenade/Demo charge if they *are not* manually targeted on the tank....they are more likely to use it on their own if you leave them to do it themselves. So far this has worked for me.

Ages ago I had a MkIV taken out by a Brit Inf HQ, no smoke, no cover fire, the tank(buttoned) wandered too close to the HQ unit and got itself KO'ed then the HQ gunned down the crew. The worst part of this was I was playing the AI.....

Don't feel bad Thumpre. Happens to me all the time. However when I tried it (American's taking out a Panther) my troops got all shot up for the effort. I guess the lighter tanks would be easier for troopers to take out however so makes sense. And Darth welcome and enjoy I know I have for over a year and a half.

Well, now you know why CMBO is so good. One of those cardinal sins is to have a tank unescorted by infantry, get too close to the enemy! Enemy infantry love to climb all over blind tanks and have fun!! I always try to get a squad and leader in close hidden near an ememy tank. Now watch the fun!!

I've tended to think I haven't had much luck with infantry against tanks but over time the kills add up:

1. Dropped demo charges in the back of a Hummel from a high building.

2. Killed unbuttoned PzIV with HQ grenades.

3. Killed Panther with rifle grenade flank shot in night urban combat (squad down to one man!)

4. Killed a Hotchkiss with a sharpshooter (2 man crew and when commander got sniped, other crewman abandoned.)

5. Killed a StugIII with rifle grenade flank shot

6. Immoblized another Stug with rifle grenade

7. And of course, various Wespe's, Hummels and HTs with 50 cal. and various HTs with grenades.

There were surely some panzerfaust kills in there, too that I haven't tracked. Once got a rifle grenade penetration into the rear of a Panther but didn't kill it. I've also blown up various demo charges around Panthers without much luck.

Most of these kills were, not surprisingly, against the AI. Human players tend to be a lot more careful about getting their armor close to enemy infantry without support.

And yes, I agree that the vulnerablity of unsupported tanks to infantry is one of the key features of the game.
