Back to the Valley....

Recommended Posts

I'm playing the CMBO DEMO "Valley of Trouble" senario and there is only one thing I can not adequately explain. How do those German signs which read something to the effect of "Achtung! Mein Panzer!" Pop-up when I run over a mine? There was one sign in the middle of the road at the start, but after being passed by infantry it disappeared. Then I made the mistake of rushing a tank further down the road. It was imobilized, I assume by an AT mine. But I do not understand the "realism" nor rationale for the same sign popping up in the middle of the road. Are the Germans supposed to be designing jokes in their mines? I am honestly confused. Please, Please someone explain what this is all about!

Oh, and I bought the full game after the first few turns of this scenario. Battlefront has continued to amaze me in their attention to detail and quality of work in everything about their operation- CMBO, manual, website etc....the word craftsmanship keeps coming to mind. You have won another loyal customer by your high level of integrity. I am confident that the Battlefront model from top to bottom is the future of PC (war/strategy/simulation) gaming. Thanks.

Those signs are just markers. There's no "BANG!" kind of signs popping up when a mine explodes, if you were thinking that smile.gif

I suppose what happened with the infantry was that they disarmed a hasty "daisy-chain" minefield. But you can't spot proper AT mines beforehand.

actually there is an explosion when a mine explodes smile.gif

it isnt very loud and you have to look closely after your squad or tank hits one

the sign only pops up to tell you you hit a minefield..

there is a mod available with two colors, yellow and white to tell you right away what mines you ran into.

engineers can clear AT mines and AP ones with demo charges

takes several turns depending on quality and if they come under fire

Daisy chains will be removed in a few seconds without democharges

Welcome to the community then, Joshua...you are "home!" If you didn't already know (from lurking), this forum is great, many helpful ppl, and the Tips & Tricks section is great for getting assistance. I recommend the "Anthology of Useful Posts" thread in that section, I have just bumped it for you...there's a month of two of reading in there about tactics to improve your game!

I exp. basically the same thing when I played Valley of Trouble- I moved my Engineers in to disarm the Daisy-Chain Anti-tank mines, and then (after losing 3 Shermans) I cleared the road situation of other threats, and raced a Sherman down the road. Suddenly it was "immobilized" but due to its speed and the down-slope, it rolled another 20-50m or so before stopping- a nice touch.

Keep in mind that you can NEVER spot "real" AT mines before running a vehicle over them, it's a bug in CM:BO, players have tested this by putting a Platoon of ELITE Engineers (better exp.level = better spotting ability) right ON the AT mines, and they are never spotted prematurely. CM:BO has a few minor bugs, but it's still the hottest wargame around...although CM:BB is just around the corner ;)

Thanks to all! The first three replies really gave me what I needed (though I will check back for more) and confirmed my best guesses. Ok, so these are markers popping up, sort of like the flags used to indicate areas of control. I must say that they are "stylish" as markers, but that is fine, I recognize the same sense of humor which slips through in the manual from time to time. AND...the tip about NEVER being able to detect AT mines was pure gold for me. That explains the fact that I had been careful to move all three engineer squads down the road on either side even up to the point where my tank hit the mine. I originally felt that I did not get my due for that effort, but now I know I will just have to stay off the rest of the road permanently (with my last three tanks. I learned about the capability of AT guns with the first two). Little "bugs" like the AT detection thing don't bother me, I know that they will be rare and far between in an otherwise detailed simulation, and as stated there is always CMBB when I'm ready!!! (probably sometime next year at the earliest!) Nonetheless, Battlefront will have a large part of my future gaming business.

I think "Valley of Trouble" is still one of the best scenarios around. I played it to death because when I tried to order the full game a printing had just run out and I had to make due with the demo for a couple of weeks.

"Chance Encounter" is also a good one. I breezed through the CMBO tutorial after playing these both 100 times.
