Canadian Scenarios and Operations

Recommended Posts

I just put up the A Small Town in Germany scenario from the old ASL2CM onto my website. Would love to credit the guy who did the conversion - if anyone can help, please let me know.

Shadow, if you want to host any of the scenarios that I've created for my site, I'm amenable, as long as I get a proper credit. I can't really offer the scenarios that others have done, though I'm pretty sure they wouldn't mind. If you want to use Brett or Justin's scenarios, email me (or email them directly if you prefer) and I'll get permission for you.

I will probably redo A Small Town in Germany in a more historical manner; Canadians didn't use Cromwell tanks, for example. I'll keep both examples up - one for the SL buffs who want everything as close to the game, and them a more correct version.

If the original convertor is reading this, please email me so I can give you full credit.

I spend my free time looking for aerial photographs of Normandy (mostly)

Although a lot of people have created maps of June 7 1944, these do not add up when I read all the material available and then look at there maps. I'm not putting any map makers down because I've played all of these and had lots of fun playing both sides of the coin.

I'm starting several operations which link into each other. All done with topographical maps and aerial photographs new and old. The first is being made as we speak. 2 hours here 2 hours there. I enjoy map making more than playing the game. (rambling)

The first scenario is the first day of battle for the Canadians. From Ocean to the outskirts of Buron. The next scenario will be the 2nd of fighting and so on....

I'm going to skip some days though but the maps will take the user all the way to Caen. Although I'm going to pay alot of attention to detail when it comes to map making, I also want to make these operations fun and quick loading.

If anyone is interested drop me a line and tell me what you'd like to see.

I am currently working on a map of Buron, which extends to Gruchy in the south and Les Buissons in the north. We may want to compare notes. Aer you compressing the terrain to fit it all in?

I am working off a Canadian Army 1:25 000 map, with contour lines (10 metre contours). I can see now why an 88 set up in Gruchy caused so much havoc to the Sherbrooke Fusiliers on 7 July.

I am doing a scenario based on the 7 July action there (where HLI lost 262 men). I also have Kurt Meyer's battlemaps of the region if you are interested in seeing those, or haven't seen them yourself yet.

Getting just Buron on the map in real scale makes the game HUGE. I did one scenario once already, but the map was done without benefit of the Canadian Army contour map, so it wasn't good - besides which I didn't realize that the default folder for created scenarios games was "Saved Games" instead of "Scenarios" so I inadvertently played the scenario and saved it, and then wasn't allowed to open it again.

Am I incorrect in thinking the default folder for creations should be "Scenarios"? So as to avoid this kind of thing?

I think maybe we are on to something.

I'm very interested in what you are doing. I think the Canadians had the hardest fight in Normandy and don't get much credit for it. I am a Can/Normandy junkie. I'm still waiting for my copy of Grenadiers by Kurt Meyer so I don't have all the details to some of these battles. If you have maps I'd like copies of them. I can send you anything I have.

uh oh...boss is coming

I will send you what I can; hard copies of the Meyer maps would probably be better for you, but they really don't show any terrain detail - just unit dispositions.

I think Shadow's site would be a great place to host your maps. Normandy isn't my area of expertise, but I do look forward to looking at the work of others regarding scenarios there. Justin Claxton has a neat scenario we are testing on Tilly la Campagne you may want to check out; it is on my site as well, called A Shot in the Dark. The research seems dead on, and the battle is proving fun to play.

If you ever want info on German forces, go to http://www.feldgrau.com = I got a lot of info on German units etc., by posting on their messageboard.

I think all the nations had it bad in Normandy. Hastings' book "Overlord" was particularly eye opening, as well as Blackburn's "Guns of Normandy". The British even resorted to disbanding units, which the Canadians didn't have to resort to. It was a pretty terrible time for all involved. I wish someone would make a movie with the ferocity of Saving Private Ryan, showing how bloody awful it truly was and how terrifying it had to have been for the guys who had to live through it.

In a funny way, CM is the only thing that comes close - I've never seen an artillery barrage portrayed with such violence before - you see the shells landing a second before they impact, and you know there's no way to stop it - the screen shakes, the sound booms out, and you're pretty much reduced to just praying your guys come through it. Can't imagine doing that for a month for real.

By the way if you guys want mods done (not in a hurry) I'll be glad to do it. I've been using photoshop for 4 years

I've done lo-res mods for Canadian unit markings and uniforms. Shadow has some winter mods for uniforms on his site; they are basically the same as mine but more artisicaly done - I never did ask, Shadow, are they hi-res, too?

I am eagerly awaiting the release of the Sherman hi-res mods that have been talked about in the CM forum; I have some hi-res markings that I've done that I'd like to be able to apply to a hi-res Sherman. I don't have the time to do it myself, and it looks like it would be a duplication of effort, anyway.

That said, if you were working on hi-res Canadian Shermans, UCs, etc., I'd be willing to host them and do unit markings for all the regiments, as I've done for the lo-res mods I've done.

Maybe it's something Shadow and I could split up - Shadow, if you want to host hi-res mods, I would be willing to host just the unit markings. It would all depend on finding suitable hi-res mods, and getting the permission to host them from the artist.

I agree with you gents. I'd be interested to see what you have. I acquired my aerial photography for the Tilly map from the 'Bloody Battle for Tilly' by Ken Tout but also from some storedf in the Public Records Office, Kew. I'll happily scan them in for anyone if they let me know. Can't guarantee the qaulity though considering I'm an IT inadequate wink.gif.

I'll take anything that has to do with Normandy. Send them my way please.

Since I live in Ottawa I can go to the National Archives so if you have any requests....

If anybody is interested drop me a line.

I have several email so if anyone see my Hoopenfaust name anywhere please e-mail me at my home address

brett@magma.ca

My boss doesn't feel the same way as I do towards war games. Although his father was a tank commander for Canada. He went crazy from shells pinging off the hull of his fifth tank. Poor guy.

Hi,

You can found pretty good canadian scenarios and operation on http://appui-feu.panzershark.com in the scenario section. Some of these scenarios are translated in english (check the english scenario page).

All the maps and the OB are historically designed.

Check "Ein Wurfelspiel" about the night battle between KG Meyer-Wunsche and the Regina Rifle Regiment in Bretteville-l'Orgueilleuse (06/08/1944)

or "Bloody Buron" about the 12th SS counterattack (06/07/1944)north of Caen (operation).

There is also a huge scenario (but only in french) "Charnwood" about the fierce combats around Buron (07/08/1944).

I have the English translation of the latter two scenarios on my site, as well, and hope to get more from the webmaster at some point. I am also doing my own Buron scenario - featuring the fighting there one full month later than the fight in Bloody Buron.

Just took a look at Charnwood - the good news is that the forces and maps in my treatment look nothing like it. Looks like I used the same references though. The 1:25000 map shown on the Appui-Feu website actually has 10 metre countours, and they are clearly marked, so I have included them in my map. I also didn't extend the map all the way to St. Contest, plus some other changed to the OB of both sides. I lined up a playtester already, so we'll see what happens.

Are you Xavier Degrand? If so, Joel Montagu passed on your Wurfelspiel scenario to me, and I have included it on my site.

I also put my Buron scenario up - three volunteers are playtesting it for me. I think the Germans may be light on MGs, but I managed to get a list of units from a source at www.feldgrau.com I've also not included rocket artillery, etc., as in the Charnwood scenario.

You can download the battle from

Canadian Scenario List

I've called it "Bloody Buron II" (how original, eh)?

I've used brush to double for crops in some places; I have aerial photos of Buron and les Buissons that I am hoping to put up on the site - I think the terrain is fairly close and accurate.

I haven't tried Charnwood yet but am hoping to soon - it looks like it will be deadly for the Canadians, with the large number of German MGs and availability of rocket artillery to the Germans.

You'll find a couple of Canadian scenarios at my website http://www.gamesofwar.de . All of my scenarios (with the exception of one or two ficticious ones) are made with 1:25000 topo maps and 1950 aerial photographs from the respective areas. I'd like to specifically point out a huge operation I made - "The Goch-Kalkar Road" - which might be the most detailed and historically accurate opertaion I made so far. I used the wonderful book "Rhineland - the Battle to End the War" by (then) Lt.Col. Denis Whitaker, who described the battle for the Goch-Kalkar Road (also known as the Schwanenhof battle) in great detail. But beware, the operation IS huge...

I could only find the one Canadian scenario on your site; looks interesting, I am downloading it now. Did you have others? I like the actual photo - I am trying to put up supporting documents on my site along with the scenarios I host - I think it helps in getting immersed in the game.

EDIT - just looked at your map - excellent use of contours; I think a lot of scenario designers fail to realize that a 10 or 20 metre change in elevation is going to involve 8 changes of elevation level in CM. Your landscape is very nicely done.

I am going to have to find a source of good contour maps.

I find Whitaker is one of the few Canadian authors who attempts to look at things from the German side - finding references in English to detailed info about German troops in any given place on the Canadian front at any given time is really quite troublesome.

I just uploaded PeterNZ's new Canadian battle (Polder Grave) to my site (by kind permission of Der Kessel); the terrain is quite unique and challenging. PeterNZ tells me he is now part of the design team at Der Kessel ( http://www.derkessel.com ); congratulations, Peter, and we look forward to seeing more good work from you and the rest of the team there.
