Der Kuenstler
I'm playing a senario now where I have several universal carriers that say "smoke mortar" in the info screen. However, I can't seem to target anything with them for smoke. Does anyone know how they are to be used?
SgtMuhammed
When the units come under fire they fire them and reverse. You should see a little cloud near the front of the vehicle a few seconds after it retreats. You can't manually target them.

Kanonier Reichmann
Yes, they exist purely for defensive/self preservation purposes and can't be used to blanket an area specified by yourself. Regards Jim R.

MikeyD
Most of the game's U.S./Brit armor mounts a 'smoke mortar' in the turret. Pretty much just a flare pistol sticking out of a hole in the roof. Not exactly the hightest technology. For a REAL 'smoke mortar', believe the big U.S. 4.2 inch mortar as originally designed to deliver chemical ordnance (WWI-type warfighting). Its main function (at least initially) was smoke screens.
SgtMuhammed
That and mustard gas. It originally wasn't even assigned to mortar platoons but rather to chem platoons.

Mortars never are, are they? Originally posted by MikeyD: For a REAL 'smoke mortar', believe the big U.S. 4.2 inch mortar as originally designed to deliver chemical ordnance (WWI-type warfighting). Its main function (at least initially) was smoke screens. The main intended function for all descendants of the Stokes 4-inch mortar was delivering chemical weapons. That's why the Chemical Warfare Service was the branch that operated the 4.2" in the US Army. And you don't think the German 10.5cm Nebelwerfer was originally intended to project only smoke, do you? Conoisseurs of silly measurements may like to know that the original Stokes projectiles were cylinders of 3-in or 4-in diameter, seated in the bore by means of two precisely-dimensioned rings. The additional diameter of the rings meant that the bore diameter of the 3-inch Stokes was 3.2 inches (81mm) and the 4-inch Stokes 4.2 inches (107mm). These have remained popular mortar calibres ever since, although the adoption of the Brandt-pattern finned and tapered bomb means that the projectiles are now a bit fatter. All the best, John.

Simon Fox
That's entirely unnecessary, with Salt it's either the PRO or some bloke at the pub.
