leakyD
One more time, for holiday cheer... Soviet Posters Some samples: Anyone else got any good ones?
Engel
http://www.earthstation1.com/ is a reasonably good site for finding propaganda posters and they also have some audio and video clips. The site looks awful and may be a bit hard to navigate, but the stuff is there. PeterX
Here's a chestnut from my collection. It's American not Russian, but it's got an authentic WW2 relevance.

Phantom Captain
A friend of mine just translated the third poster for me! The one with the spiked tiger. It says: Kill German Animals! Hiltlers Army Can Be and Must Be Destroyed! Now that's propaganda.
Michael Emrys
The guy in the foreground of the second poster with the long, flowing beard reminds me a lot of one of William Blake's depictions of God. Interesting thing to happen in a nation officially atheistic. Michael

This poster may be translated: "I, plowman stay on guard with my rifle, I guard freedom and my country". I had to check in dictionary what "pakhar'" is, I have never seen this word in chess literature - my only source of Russian vocabulary Straif
Phantom Captain
My friend translated the second as: I'm doing this to save the motherland below: I'm a farmer holding a rifle so I can have my freedom and free the motherland The fourth one: Everybody needs to have a military education so we can be free LOL, hope you didn't think I was being pro-Nazi when I phrased it as "Now that's propaganda" I just meant they really got to the point! I love these little pieces of history and love to know what the people thought at the time.

kburns24
Thanks for clarifying that Commissar... I use to work with Russian linguists in the U.S. Army and they use to hurl insults at each other all the time on the operations floor. That was one of the words they used all the time, all in good fun though.

The Vyrdolak
Here are some more vintage propaganda cartoons, this time a bit on the risque side. Don't go there if you're easily offended (this means you, Scipio!) Licking the Axis Powers http://vatican.rotten.com/axis/

Previously the main thrust had been a "Socialism in One Country" effort with the major themes of soviet workers and peasants uniting. But after the German attack, the Church and the themes of Russian nationalism and the Rodina were ... resurrected, presumably because Stalin and the Politburo considered them to be more effective in motivating the populace. If you review Russian posters chronologically, which I did when doing my undergraduate thesis this split is pretty easy to see. It would have to be, as I'm no genius.

Terence
Originally posted by kburns24: Suka = slutIn case anyone is interested, "shlukha" means slut. Its extremely rude, and I suggest you don't say it to any Russian natives unless you are prepared to accept the possible consequences.
YECoyote
anyone got the copy of the poster "Christmas in the Cauldron"? I searched desperately for it, but couldn't find it...even searched the archived forums.
