Soviet Posters redux...

Eh, not God, just plowman. This poster may be translated: "I, plowman stay on guard with my rifle, I guard freedom and my country".

I had to check in dictionary what "pakhar'" is, I have never seen this word in chess literature - my only source of Russian vocabulary :)

My friend translated the second as:

I'm doing this to save the motherland

below: I'm a farmer holding a rifle so I can have my freedom and free

the motherland

The fourth one:

Everybody needs to have a military education so we can be free

LOL, hope you didn't think I was being pro-Nazi when I phrased it as "Now that's propaganda" I just meant they really got to the point! I love these little pieces of history and love to know what the people thought at the time.

Actually, when the fewmets hit the windmill (so to speak) Stalin dictated a major shift in propaganda efforts. Previously the main thrust had been a "Socialism in One Country" effort with the major themes of soviet workers and peasants uniting.

But after the German attack, the Church and the themes of Russian nationalism and the Rodina were ... resurrected, presumably because Stalin and the Politburo considered them to be more effective in motivating the populace.

If you review Russian posters chronologically, which I did when doing my undergraduate thesis this split is pretty easy to see. It would have to be, as I'm no genius.

According to the ASL designer notes, it means "bitch". SU-76 crews nicknamed their vehicles

this.

There are some Russian women at work, perhaps I'll ask them. Then again, maybe not.</font>
