Is there a way to Fire then hide?

I resently lost a Flamethrower unit when I targeted a unit. What I wanted was for the unit to fire then hide.

Could I have target the opposing infantry, press the pause, then hide to get the effect I desired?

No. You can only add a hide to the tail end of the movement commands (move, fast, move to contact, etc).

About the closest you can come is give them a short sneak order with appropriate delay, so that they don't pop up and fire until near the end of the turn, so you can immediately hide them at the beginning of the next turn.

For anything but a flamethrower, your question makes sense. Once that ball of fire comes out, everyone knows.

Borg spotting makes that pointless anyway - if you open up and someone sees you, the whole army does. Still, if you are only visible to one unit, then whipe it out, you are effectively 'hidden' anyway.

The Flamethrower was in a building. The infantry unit could not be targeted directly, so I did an area fire right next to him.

My Flamethrower fired once then he was dead.

Don't know who took him out.

Thought if I could shoot then hide, then he (flamethrower) would survive.

Nah flamethrowers are notoriously vulnerable - you generally need some infantry support when you use them, if just to pin the enemy squad so that the Flamethrower can break it.

I think the lesson here is not to use your flamethrowers unsupported, and also to make sure they are in a keyholed position.

You can give a FT a fire order, pause, and then a sneak order (away) from the enmy. Hopefully attack from a position that will allow the sneak-to spot to be some kind of cover.
