Hans
In 1940 what WAS the French plan for infantry platoon AT defense? The Brits had Boyes rifles and the Germans their own ATR, so did the Italians, so what was the French concept?

Sirocco
http://miniatures.de/html/int/toe-1940-french-infantry.html Table of Organisation & Equipment French Infantry, 1940 French infantry sections, like those of other nations, had a specialist grenadier who fired rifle grenades and handled most of the hand grenades. Due to the speed of mobilisation, the French army experienced equipment shortages which resulted in some units not being issued with rifle grenade launchers (lance type) in 1940. Rifle Platoon Platoon Headquarters Rifle Section (12 men of all ranks) Sergent (Chef de Groupe) Caporal (2ème Chef de Groupe) Mitrailleur (LMG) Chargeur pour le Fusil Mitrailleur (LMG) Sapeur Sapeur Sapeur Pourvoyeur Pourvoyeur Pourvoyeur Sniper Tromblon V.B. (grenade man with rifle grenade launcher) Rifle Section (12 men of all ranks) Rifle Section (12 men of all ranks) Perhaps the Tromblon V.B. had AT rifle grenades?
Hans
As clearly as I can understand from what I've read is that the French didn't have a platoon AT system, they used more centrally commanded 25mm AT guns. They also had some rare 47mm and old 37mm. I wonder if they had some nasty AT grenades???? French Grenade Grogs?
Hans
A bit more info, .....'Therefore, a regular infantry battalion had 36 LMGs, 48 VB rifle grenade launchers, 16 MMGs, 3 60mm mortars, 2 81mm mortars and 2 25mm AT guns.' Ah yes those VB rifle grenade launchers seem to be the platoons internal AT asset
Denwad
There was a HEAT grenade for the V.B. launcher, infact it was developed into the Bazooka's rocket. However, I don't believe it was deployed during the BOF.

The 25mm guns were responsible for dealing with enemy tanks
Hans
Thanks guys for the info. I guess for BOF one gives the French infantry a lot of rifle grenades!
Kanonier Reichmann
I don't like the sound of those "V.B" launchers. I'm buggered if I can see how launching bottles of "V.B." (Victoria Bitter) would do much harm to a tank. Regards Jim R.
