What is so special about this game??

Recommended Posts

What other game allows you to command so many different types of units? If you buy a tank game you command tanks but infantry are out of your control. and vice versa. The game takes genuine planning and luck, critical to all real WWII battles. And to top it all off what game allows you to customise so much of it like CMBO? If you dont like a sound you can get a different one from so many different websites. Thats not something I have seen on many games. Come to think of it I havent seen it on any games myself than CMBO. THANKS BATTLEFRONT STAFF! :D

The first time you successfully ambush an enemy tank with a bazooka or panzerschreck you'll know what's so great about this game.

Then you take that thrill and add to it about 100 more similar thrills and you'll understand why you probably won't need many other games on your hard drive ever again, except maybe CM2.

Make that a KO'd King Tiger from a 100 meters out, with a bazooka that you spend at LEAST 10 turns sneaking into position and you have a THRILL that is unequalled in any other game that I know of.

A Vet 'zook only costs about 18 points, I have no idea how much a King Tiger costs ( I NEVER buy them) but its got to be close to 300-350 pts and then you will know the beauty of the 'zook (Same thrill for the 'faust 'schreck or Piat)

Its a GREAT game!!!

My biggest joy was when I used my sharp-shooter to kill the tank commander of a Churchill. And, while the tank was in SHOCK, I moved my Panzer IV (tank destroyer), around the back and blew him a new a-hole.

Let's see other game provide you with that kind of combined arm tactics.

What a load of hokey!! The reason it's good is that it's good - forget the mods, the eye-candy - the game'd be just as good without it.

Well, Combat Mission is a great game, but I have to disagree with that.

Graphics are an integral part of the game. After all, what is the primary method

that you interact with your PC? Feel? Sorry, there is no force feedback

available in Combat Mission. Sound? Sorry, although sound adds greatly to the

experience it is not an absolute. Smell? I guess that depends upon where you PC

is located. Taste? Let's not go there...
;)

Well DUH!

The graphics that come with the game are perfectly adequate for that - the mods don't add anything in terms of interactivity - they are pure candy.

Lately for me, my big thrill is seeing my little "Puppchens" take out 5-6 tanks before finally being taken out by some irate Allied infantry.

Another big thrill? Trying to play a desperate German defense against a determined Allied attack with lots of armor, and little or no panzer support on your own side. Thank God for the Panzerfausts and 75mm PaK40. Or trying to do the same with the unreliable Volkssturm in late war scenarios...

It's true in this case the mods don't actually add any "features," they simply add a great deal to the experience. Are they necessary? Absolutely. Want to find out? Let BTS release CM2 with the ability to mod the vehicles and the terrain removed. The game would be reduced to a following of only the true hardcore. Every member of this forum has watched great wargames get kicked to the curb and vanish from the face of the earth for that very same mistake.

For the life on me I've never been able to understand why some wargamers seem to actually resent better or more detailed graphics. "It's just eye candy" gets repeated almost as a mantra in some circles, despite every indication of the opposite. Guys I've got to tell ya, it's a moot point! We live in an age where a 1.2 Ghz PC with all the options sells for just over a grand. PC wargamers have always had to suffer with horrible graphics almost like some kind of unwanted stepchild of the gaming industry. That time is past. All other segments of the gaming industry understand that to be competitive a game or simulation must continue to strive to be as good as it can be in every area. No one expects to hear "Wow, Quake IV is the best game I ever played! Unfortunately I won't be playing any more because it looks like crap..."

If it makes you feel any better to point out that a new Porche is just "eye candy" compared to a new Pontiac, then so be it. But at the very least it's a ridiculous observation. If you're saying that even it CM:BO looked really really hideous you and five other guys would still be playing...well, I'm sure BTS sleeps better at night knowing that. As for the remainder of us, I would say the amount of obvious effort that goes into the "eye candy" mods shows he true score.

Opinions will vary. That's just my 2 cents worth. ;)

You really think so?? redface.gif

They'll sell at least one - to me!!

I can't understand why someone would buy a game based on the ability to change it. That ability might make it more interestign for those so inclined, but would that feature be enough for you to buy it if you're not interested in the game in the first place??

And your comment about prsches and pontiacs is meaningless - they offer different performances, not just different looks. Compare a Mazda Familia and a Ford Escort - essentially the smae car rebadged, yet some people will buy a Ford and not a Mazda.

I bought this game without knowing about the mods. I played for months without them. I have some, but I've stopped applying them - they're a waste of my time IMO. I'll buy CMBB and subsequent with or without them too.

I have nothing against the mod-makers, or those who want to use them - go for it. But I completely fail to see how modifiable graphics can make the game great. If it wasn't already a great game then the mod-ing ability would nto make it one IMO.
