Well, it will not hide you from thermal sights, but it can trick the human eye. Often the tank commander or loader spot enemy targets before the gunner. So a good camo will be helpful against tanks as well.

It will not hurt you, so why not do it?

Not everyone even on the modern battlefield has such optics/equipment. Camouflage still plays quite a role. If it was deemed useless then running around in Leopard 2A5's/M1A2's camouflaged in cherry red with white racing stripes would be appropriate. Infantry can run around in red and yellow spandex with shoot me signs/balloons overhead. ;)
