I do have a brand new system, I am not worried about the new system, but I am worried about my older system. I have an older PC that my nephew uses for us to battle each other. The specs are Intel Pent 3 877 MGz, Voodoo 5500 AGP, 512 MB of Ram. So my question is will CM2 play on my older system??? Thanks Shatter Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

MikeyD Posted September 20, 2001 Share Posted September 20, 2001 If I find my system having troubles with CMBB (I'm on a 300mhz G3 mac) I, for one, would be MORE than willing to break into the art files and start down-resing art til the thing runs properly on my machine. I've found you can mix & match high and lo-res skins on the same vehicle with no harmful effects. How low can you go on grass textures before the game starts looking funky? And BTS also stated multiple times than a P3 400 and 16Mo VRAM will be the bottom line for CMBB. I just upgraded to a 1.4 Athlon Thunderbird(which has been bechmarked to be just as fast as the P4 chip, not bragging but it seems that with most sofware needs the speed)with 256 DDR 266 mhtz of ram, but how will Microsoft's XP effect CMBB. Rumors are that XP will need 1 GHZ to Operate. The big question will usually be what kind of driver support will exist for video and audio cards. The Voodoo Banshee unfortunately may have problems. Though it has enough VRAM for both CMBO and CMBB, it may have some display 'quirks' that could annoy some people. I'm not sure what Microsoft intends to include with XP. I can't recall off-hand if Win2K has a Banshee driver or not. I'll be looking into this issue in awhile. If you have any cash left-over from your upgrade you could get a new video card (since the Banshee is starting to show its age). You can purchase a GeForce2 MX400 32 or 64Mb AGP card for less than US$100 and even some of the DDR GeForce2's are coming down in price. Generally speaking, I believe most people who are able to currently run CMBO at 800 x 600 or higher at a fairly decent speed should be able to run CMBB. The default textures and lowest 3D game resolution will be higher than CMBO, therefore anyone that is forced to do software rendering right now will probably need a new video card (hence the 8Mb minimum for a video card). CMBB may perform a bit more slowly than CMBO, but I don't imagine that it will be a huge difference (especially with the number of graphic mods that people usually run). I think the people who may be disappointed the most are the ones on old iMacs where there is only 2-6Mb of VRAM. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The GeForce2 MX400 cards are at a real good price point. You can get some of the 'clone' cards for around US$70 (a 64Mb) plus shipping. If you're willing to spend more some of the GeForce2 GTS's have come down too (US$85 - 32Mb, US$130 - 64Mb). PriceWatch lists all kinds of deals (though you have to be patient on shipping time and watch out for huge shipping fees from some unscrupulous vendors). The GeForce2 GTS will be faster than the GeForce2 MX400 (since the later uses SDR rather than DDR and when it does use DDR it uses it at half the bandwidth). The biggest difference among the horde of GeForces out there will most often be the speed and quality of the video memory, the speed of the core video chip and general build quality of the PCB. Many will have warranties of a year or more and unless you get a brand name (i.e. - Creative, Hercules) that is 'retail boxed' you'll have to go back to the vendor you purchased the card from for support and warranty service. Other than Windows 2000's 'transparent white' issue and some problems in FSAA (which are getting better), they work fine. NVidia puts out drivers on an almost consistent basis and since they're 'universal' they even work with cards made 3 years ago (TNTs). I believe the BMP folder on my old system is identical to my new systems BMP folder. Yes I use nothing but the highest-rest mods I can find and the old system has no problems what so ever. Maybe a frame rate glitch occasionaly. I often wonder if purchasing a new system was worth it, but I do have to say my new system runs CM very smooth, don't think a ever have seen the frame rate hesitate before, plus the turn processing time has been improved greatly, **** at least 1/2 less waiting time, even on huge battles. I was just a little worried about the Voodoo 5500 card, because they are out of business, and the support will be one soon.
