Bren Carriers units from HQ company

Recommended Posts

I'm in the process of learning to play the British units. The third Scottish Corridor campaign mission features a Bren Carrier section from HQ company. And I'm somewhat sceptical about the way it is modelled in-game.
I'm not a specialist of British infantry, but IIRC the Bren guns of the carriers were removable. So basically the Bren carrier unit from HQ company was a 2-BAR, 4-men unit. In CM it is modelled as: 1 Bren carrier vehicle with a fixed Bren and 1 driver, and an independant 3-men unit with a Bren gun. So basically you have two choices:

  • everybody on-board, both Bren are manned but one is dangerously exposed when firing.
  • only the driver on-board, in which case one of the Bren is unmanned.

It looks to me that the units is not modelled adequately. Why not model it as a squad of two, 2-men teams? This way you could keep 1 team on-board to man the vehicle Bren, and use the other team as 2-men Bren team...

Is there any Brit infantry specialist around to enlighten me somewhat?

(In my present mission I'll play it cheesily to compensate, using a 2-rifles, scout team from a nearby infantry squad to man the Bren Carrier).

(And I'm not speaking of the Bren carriers from platoon scouts, which is a different beast; I'm talking about the HQ companies Bren Carriers!)

Apparently the official name is Support Coy, not HQ Coy. Each support Coy has one carrier platoon with four carrier sections of three Bren carriers each.

The platoon scouts universal carriers show the radio antenna's but no radio icon ever pops up. Seek some insight how to do recon if you can't report back. Now I use them as infantry support to even the odds against German infantry. During set up I check what each one carries and some a spare 51 mm mortar. Others 2 Brens with plenty of ammo. To use them now I embed them with standard infantry. I feel this may not be the idea.

I had a quick check, and indeed the Bren were supposed to move forward their 2 Bren teams to cover the infantry advance. And both Bren guns were removable indeed. Actually CM models them poorly and I agree with you that in-game they are best used as mini armored cars amongst infatry units (and as mobile ammo supplies).

How dare you mis identify my Scots as Brits...Now, if you have said, "I'm in process of learning how to use CW units", then all is forgiven 🙂

Yes and one in the Loamshires had a para's 51mm mortar which you can only see when you open the acquisition option. So keep them close to their HQ and send them to reinforce a regular infantry platoon.

At the time of writing Scotland is still part of Great Britain so he is not daring too much 😉.

That's it. Claim your independance, join the EU, and I swear I'll never identify the Scots as Brits ever! 😇

By the way, using Bren carriers as mini AC seems completely AGAINST their recommended use in RL. They were NOT suppose to engage the enemy. But as CM doesn't allow to remove the Bren from the carrier, you either have to chose between two unrealistic ways of using them: either as AC, or wasting 1 of the Bren guns.

If it was up to me we would not have left the EU in the first place.  On the other point, I am English 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 so I'm not too bothered.

The thread is getting dangerously political… It'll soon erupt into a fight between pro- and con- Brexiters, followed by Scots separatists against English unionists, with the Welsh joining in at some point… 😊

And a French referee. 😇

I also had a couple of Carriers with a hidden 51 mm mortar inside. I loaned one to an IC team and another one to a regular infantry squad but none of the mortars appear in their weapons arsenals, they continue to use their standard rifles... 😪

Maybe only the unit who owns the Carrier can use it (that would make sense, not everybody is trained to mortar use)? It looked strange to me to have a AT gun ammo bearer team armed with a mortar though...

I let the driver acquire it. And he can bail out as required. Use it like a Jackal in SF2 with their AGL,which is of more use outside the vehicle.
