Cantigny Tank Park

Recommended Posts

Thought this might be of some interest.  As a break from all the goings on in the world and because it was 70 degrees here yesterday I finally took a trip to the 1st Division Museum and tank park in Wheaton, IL outside the city.  I've been wanting to go for a long time but just never made the journey.  I have always wanted to stand next to/see an M1 for real.  It was very impressive and even bigger than what was in my head.  The M113 was actually bigger than I thought as well.  Apologies for the kids climbing all over, tons of people were out enjoying the warm up.

I don't think I need to caption anything for anyone here, ha!

+1.  Very interesting place to visit.  I've been there several times since I was a kid.  Then, as an adult, took my kids there.  They added new displays of equipment and information over the years.  I think when I first visited as a kid the most advanced tank they had was a M48 Patton.  Now of course they have some M60s and a M1.  I hope you got a chance to go inside the museum.  In the museum you can walk through a WW I bunker, walk out a landing craft onto Normandy beach, walk down a jungle trail in Vietnam with the sound of choppers overhead etc.  Very cool place.  :)

I did!!  I was really impressed with the museum as well and it's free!  The trench and the jungle trail were fantastic!  They also had the Battle of the Bulge display too.  It was an really nice collection of artifacts from all their engagements.  The WWI artifacts and displays were really neat to see as well.

Here's a few more.  I love in the Bulge display that they are showing support with the Ukrainian colors on the Sherman!

Until I saw the above M1 pic, I never really knew how well sloped the hull armour is on that thing. I wonder if its more sloped than the BMP!

Nice *i*s! (pics)

Haha!  Thanks.  The Ukraine war thread has sucked up all our attention!

I felt the same way, both with that slope in front and just how BIG in general it was!  I knew the M1 was big and all but it's really impressive when you actually see one for real.
