Spelling Issue

Recommended Posts

Hello class! I am Spelling Bee, your substitute teacher today. I have come to notice two people (two identities, one person) chronically complaining about poor spelling on the CM board. After a short search, I have found some good examples that we can learn from. We shall read the quotes from the board, and then correct the spelling errors in the quotes.

I shall begin our exercise with the following complaints about poor spelling:

From Maximus:

Obnoxious Line #1 - complains about spelling, yet has spelling errors in his own post.

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Well, since Rob/1's last thread got closed up. I'll just ask it here.

Wasn't his spelling brought up before? Didn't OB&G complain about his spelling only to be chastized about it?

I hate to say this, but it seems OB&G was right. And if I were OB&G (which I'm not, thank you!) I think I'd say, "I told you so."<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Note - the word Chastised has no "Z" in it.

Obnoxious Line #2 - complains about spelling

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Sooner or later, bad spelling will bite you in the ass.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Obnoxious Line #3 - complains about spelling:

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Robert/1, once again, go back to school and learn how to spell. Sheesh! I mean there are misspellings on this board all the time, but none and just plain dumb as yours.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Obnoxious Line #4 - more complaints about spelling: <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>I wouldn't be so harsh, but look at what he is misspelling...

ex."conferming".."sertain"..."seares"<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

This time as OB'G

Obnoxious Line #5 - Bitch about spelling:

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Com'on dude, lets get with the program in your spelling.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

This collection of evidence cleary shows a habit of posting to criticize spelling errors. What we will do today is show a collection of critical posts by this person, showing his own spelling errors. Then, we shall show the necessary corrections.

Now for some of the better posts by the self-proclaimed spelling monitor:

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>But it is true, whether you like it or not. As with wargames or any strategy game, how can you use sound tactics when you're constantly trying to scoll around the board issueing orders to units when the units should already know what to do anyway?<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Notes - scroll has an "r" in it. "Issuing" has no "e"

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>I just played a PBEM game of CE with my buddy and Panzerfausts took out three of my Shermans, so definately they have got that Panzerfaust thing fixed.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Note - definitely is not spelled with an "a"

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Anybody planning on doing any Kelly's Hereos-based scenarios.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Note - "Hereos" we'll assume this is a typo

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>If you are trying to flush out defenders in foxholes and have some nearby infantry ready for an assualt, bombard the enemy with mortars or something right as you are getting ready to assault. And try and time the assualt so they don't quite get into the barrage before the turn ends.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Note - Assault is "ault", not "ualt"

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>What kind of explosions do you want? Bit-maped, simulator-type explosions?<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Note - Mapped is spelled with two p's.

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Really you got to look at the absolute HUGE number of ploygons being used in any given scenario.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Note - we'll assume polygon is a typo.

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>So therefor I beg you to find a game that offers such a high polygon count that maintains a reasonable frame rate count. The reason their hasn't been a true 3D battlefield wragame will now, is that there hasn't been the hardware to handle it.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Notes - therefore ends with an "e", their is spelled "there" unless possessive, which this example is not, "wragame" is assumed to be a typo

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>CM will then open the file and playing commenses.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Note - Commences is spelled with a "c".

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Well, that's a question I've been wandering about myself.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Note - Wondering about is spelled with an "o"

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>My buddy seemed to like it, especially CC2, but I just could never get into it for the fore-mentioned reasons.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Note - fore-mentioned should be "aforementioned", without a hyphen.

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Well, for a little background, one of the pursueing officers was a tanker in Desert Storm, so he was aware of how to deal with the situation.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Note - "pursuing" is not spelled with an "e"

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>However, the command bonuses between all three levels of HQs AREN'T accumulative.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Note - accumulative is used improperly. This should be "cumulative".

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>As far as succession being legal according to the Constitution, that's the first I've heard of it.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Note - I'm sure you mean "secession", the act of seceding, not succession, else having children would be illegal.

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Actually I made the comment in jist of an incident in Market Garden where an American Airborne Division was waiting for XXX Corps, and an American commander rode back in a jeep and found XXX Corps hangin' out in a village sippin' tea with the locals.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Note - Jist - do you mean "jest", as in making humor, or "gist", as in the main idea here? "Jist" is not a word.

Well, class, that brings today's lesson to a close. And what did we learn? Everyone makes spelling mistakes. It's not fun to be on the receiving end of posts that mock poor spelling. Lastly, we learned that people who live in glass houses should not throw stones.

Have a good day, and I hope to not see you all again soon.

Of course he doesn't have his copy of his game, I don't have one either so I am posting here.

BTW Spelling Bee, sometimes words end with se instead of ze because not everyone learned English based on that great American invention from the ground up, the Webster dictionary.

Buy an Oxford dictionary for @#$% sake.

Someone has FAR too much time on their hands waiting for CM to arrive.

HEY !

here's a thought, why not do something usefull and set up a CE test scenario with 5 StuG's vs. 5 Shermans at 500 meters and see how many first shot hits there are out of 100 rounds fired and of those first shot hits how many result in Gun kill or a track hit or a K-KILL, KO'd tanks and post the results of those 100 first shot, rounds fired.

Ok I did this last night and I set up 5 Shermans vs 6 StuGs at 314 meters and let them all open fire on each other at the same time.

Did it twice

First time (SURPRISE)

1 KO'd Sherman

and

6 KO'd StuGs after one minute

next time same set up

(re-run the last save before the dual)

2 KO'd Shermans

and 4 KO'd Stugs

after on minute

in the next minute

the Shermans got 2 first shot hits

and KO'd both remaining StuG's

so after two minutes

there were

2 KO'd Shermans out of 5

and

6 KO'd StuGs out of 6

NOW I think that is a most more productive use of wasted time than dealing with spelling errors on this BBS.

Preacher,

Good eye. It's difficult to proof a long post in this small little box. Corrections noted and made. Thanks.

Pat,

Indeed you are correct, as the spelling of Armour with a U was left alone. But, there has been a post by this individual about living in the US, hence the "s". And your parents will get a call from the principal for your foul language.

Thanks "Spelling Bee"...I got a good laff...opps laugh from your post. While I'm laughing I want you to know that your point is well taken...There is actually no need to point out spelling errors to every poor soul who contributes to this forum. I hope OB&G/Max would cease the behavior as it serves him ill and is hurtful to those he picks on.

Indeed! The only thing those who lack an appreciation for orignal spelling are missing, is a life. So, I encourage them to get a copy of CM and come up with one.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Easier said than done. I ordered mine quite a while ago, still not received.

Kingfish,

Actually it wasn't me. If it was me you can bet I'd have just come straight out and said it with my name on it wink.gif. I don't mind reminding Minimus that I dislike his behaviour towards non-native English speakers and those with problems spelling.

Still, whoever Spelling Bee is I got a great laugh from reading his post and wish him well in his, hopefully, continuing torment of Minimus. wink.gif

Damm! I just lost 5 bucks!

Just kidding wink.gif

You were my first guess, To me it looked like your handiwork.

Now i must guess again...Hmmm, let's see...my second guess would be Eathan (well written, lots of quotes)...then again it could be Peng (again, well written with a touch of witty humor)...Or better yet, Steve (nah, he's too busy)...Hmmm, this one's tough.

Does anyone else want to take a stab at it?
