slippy
I'm catching up on a few books related to operations in Normandy, mainly in the British sector such as Epsom, Bluecoat, Goodwood etc.I must admit to getting a bit bogged down when it comes to visualising where villages and descriptions of actions fit into the overall picture. Therefore i am looking for a good map or maps of the Normandy area that has good detail and is representative of the area at this time, any one have any suggestions please? Checked out some modern maps, but with developments such as new roads, railways and bulidings they are not that good. Searched online but have not really found anything suitable. Any help appreciated. slipper
rocketman
This is about as good as it gets (AFAIK). You can view and download 1GB maps (TIFF format) of the Normandy sections, as well as the rest of France and Belgium.
Michael Emrys
If you are willing to spend a little money, this could be the kind of thing you are looking for: https://www.amazon.com/D-Day-Atlas-Anatomy-Normandy-Campaign/dp/0500291195/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1485244844&sr=1-1&keywords=the+d-day+atlas It appears to have all the locations mentioned in most accounts and is a great help in visualizing the battles. It covers just about everything from D-Day to the liquidation of the Falaise pocket and brief coverage of the follow-up pursuit. He has a book devoted to each of those battles as part of the Over the Battlefield series, which takes its name from the extensive use of aerial photography taken while those battles were ongoing, and the maps as I recall are pretty good too. slippy
Thanks for your replies. Ian Dalglishs' book is one i have, and is really good, but also one of the books i am struggling with, as i have to keep cross referencing to see where in the bigger picture each small battle occurs. There is an overview map on p.10-11 which is the sort of map with detail i am looking for, if i could find a larger version of that map it would be ideal. I have a few of the atlas style books, and they are a little to large (fussy git aren't i :)). Something about 1:25000 scale or larger, but not a modern map. thanks again for your suggestions.
Warts 'n' all
You could try a reproduction print of the old Michelin maps of Normandy.
BletchleyGeek
I would recommend this site https://www.battlefieldhistorian.com in particular this collection https://www.battlefieldhistorian.com/gsgs_4347_1_25000_normandy.asp I bought the Carentan map and made a map out of it, posted at the TSDIII http://www.thefewgoodmen.com/tsd3/combat-mission-battle-for-normandy/cm-battles-for-normandy-add-ons-maps/map-aussaie-master-map/ So I can attest the material is top notch quality, and well suited for map making.
