Recon HUMVEE - any tips?

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I've started the US campaign and doing OK at 20 minutes in. Killing russian recce and a few tanks with presicion artillery with no friendly casualties so far.

Footmobile recon-units are deployed and still surviving. The recon bradley too.

However, I'm having difficulty utilizing the recon humvee for any kind of observation after having transported the the scouts to their OPs. Any attempt at observation from hulldown invites immediate fire regardless how carefully it inches into position. Scouting routes for IFVs and tanks invites swift death.

Would anyone like to share how to get the most from this unit?

Thanks,

K.

All recon vehicles are challenging to use in Combat Mission because they are intended for operational or grand tactical level reconnaissance, ie. to report to brigade HQ if there's enemy forces in an area the size of a CM map and if they are moving, blocking roads or such. After that they're just poorly armed and armoured vehicles with slightly better sensors than usual and should be used accordingly, ie. with special care.

My two cents, without having half the experience in game as many have here..

My suggestion is to use the recon vehicles with these concepts: first of all, is it armored or not?

If it is armored you can sustain at least the basic infantry fire, if it is not armored avoid any kind of contact with enemy infrantry.

Then, are you attacking or defending?

In defense you might want to place your scout vehicles in a bit more risky positions, but bear in mind to keep a backup point, which can be easily reached by the vehicle if it get spotted. Be sure to not place it with obstacles behind it or the vehicle might get cought trying to retreat on its own.

In offense I'd recommend to use the vehicles merely as carriers for the infantry spotters they carry, reach a distant safe point, disembark your observation team, and proceed on foot for the recon. If needed move the team back to the vehicle, reposition and repeat.

It is a vehicle that is designed for VERY long range observation, Like several thousand meters is the closest it should ever get long.  It is also showing its age in a game that assumes a reasonably competent enemy can shoot back, and has some recon assets of his own.  As a practical game matter use it to taxi specialist teams around where there is little risk of enemy fire.

As the guy who built Mission 2 for the US Campaign, my advice is, don't use them.  They are battlefield taxis until we can get remote/elevated sights from hulldown into the game engine.  Looked at hard, but engine limitations are what they are right now, and it just was not possible.  Maybe in a future upgrade, or next gen engine.

You can use them against adversaries not equipped with thermal sights from a reasonable distance, but against Russians (ie. in the US Campaign) you will need to be extremely cautious with them. However, their Mk19s and .50 Cals are quite useful for suppressing any infantry that your scouts run into.  I keep them full vehicle down and let the dismounts do the looking.  Have even dismounted their crews and used them for spotting before.  They are full up scouts, not chump truck drivers.  Would be interested in any feedback on second mission.  It pits your scout platoon, with some minor reinforcements, against the better part of a Russian mech BDE.  Have fun!

They just give you the silver star and the purple heart with the op order.
