Sequoia
As I understand it curves are a problem. Is this an editor issue or something to do with action spots or is there something more to it? Thanks
sburke
Just sheer number of additional entries in editor it would take to accommodate a more gradual curve as I understand it.
Cymru
While it has never bothered me while playing, I still look at the railroad curves and just see trains flying off every time.
Sequoia
Do I remember correctly there was talk about mega tiles that might be a solution?
sburke
Do I remember correctly there was talk about mega tiles that might be a solution? No not from BF that I recall. That as far as I can remember has always been a suggestion to BF. The mega tile idea if I understood it correctly was more an idea like geomorphic maps in ASL. The problem for BF is that to create a slowly curving turn would likely require at least dozens of additional road sections in the UI. Just look at the set of highway tiles in CMSF and a guide that was created on how to assemble them. A mega the doesn't resolve that, it is simply a premade map section with that already assembled. And for what it's worth yeah I hate the sharp turns too.
poesel
IIRC there was a discussion about exactly that not too long ago. Steve commented that the main problem is in the game engine itself and how it handles roads. He did not answer to the question if roads could be made to look better. So maybe there is an opening. And yes, zig-zig roads really hurt my eyes.
Sequoia
Poesel is right. I was able to find this post: As for the zig-zag roads, unfortunately that is going to remain with CMx2 until the day we make our last CMx2 game. The underlying system would require too many massive structural changes to allow for smooth roads at anything less than 45 increments. I know this for sure because at the top of my list for Upgrade 3.0 was getting rid of zig-zags and both Charles and Phil said "not a chance".
